تقول منه: أخطأت، وتخطأت، بمعنى واحد.

Meaning a sin. You say from it: 'khaṭi'a' yakhṭa'u khaṭa'an and khaṭa'atan (on the pattern of fa'lah), and the noun is 'al-khaṭī'ah', on the pattern of fa'īlah.
ما أخطأه، إنما هو تعجب من خطئ، لا من أخطأ.
What a mistake it is! It is merely an exclamation of wonder at sinning, not at making an error.
أبو عبيدة: خطئ وأخطأ لغتان بمعنى واحد.
Abu Ubaidah said: 'khaṭi'a' and 'akhṭa'a' are two dialects with one meaning.
وفى المثل: " مع الخواطئ سهم صائب "، يضرب للذي يكثر الخطأ، ويأتي الأحيان بالصواب.
And in the proverb: 'With the frequent mistake-makers, there is a hitting arrow,' it is used for one who makes many mistakes, yet occasionally hits the mark.
المخطئ من أراد الصواب، فصار إلى غيره، والخاطئ: من تعمد لما لا ينبغي.
The 'mukhti'' is one who intended the right thing but ended up with something else, and the 'khāṭi'' is one who deliberately does what is impermissible.
وتقول: خطأته تخطئة وتخطيئا، إذا قلت له: أخطأت، يقال: إن أخطأت فخطئني.
And you say: 'khaṭṭa'tahu takhṭi'atan and takhṭī'an', if you tell him: 'You have erred.' It is said: 'If I have erred, then blame me.'
وتخطأت له في المسألة أي أخطأت.
And 'takhāṭa'ta lahu fil-mas'alah' means you made a mistake in the matter.
وتخاطأه أي أخطأه، قال أوفى بن مطر المازني:
And 'takhāṭa'ahu' means to miss it. Uffā ibn Muṭarr al-Māzinī said:
بأن خليلك لم يقتل تخاطأت (1) النبل أحشاءه * وأخر يومي فلم يعجل
That your friend was not killed; the arrows missed his insides * And it was my last day, and he did not hasten.
وجمع الخطيئة خطايا، وكان الاصل خطائئ (2) ، - على فعائل - فلما اجتمعت الهمزتان قلبت الثانية ياء، لان قبلها كسرة، ثم استثقلت، والجمع ثقيل، وهو معتل مع ذلك، فقلبت الياء ألفا، ثم قلبت الهمزة الاولى ياء، لخفائها بين الالفين.
And the plural of 'al-khaṭī'ah' is 'khaṭāyā', and its original form was 'khaṭā'i'' (on the pattern of fa'ā'il). When the two hamzas met, the second was changed to a ya' because it was preceded by a kasrah, then it was felt as heavy, and the plural is heavy, and it is defective besides that, so the ya' was changed to an alif, then the first hamza was changed to a ya', because of its obscurity between the two alifs.
