فجعلت الفتحة التى في بطؤ على نون بطآن، حين أدت عنه، لتكون علما لها، ونقلت ضمة الطاء إلى الباء، وإنما صح فيه النقل لان معناه التعجب، أي ما أبطأه.
So the vowel (fatḥa) that was in 'baṭu' was placed on the 'nūn' of 'baṭ'ān', when it substituted for it, to be a marker for it. And the ḍamma of the ṭā' was transferred to the bā'. The transfer was valid because its meaning is exclamation, i.e., 'How slow it is!'
أبطأ القوم، إذا كانت دوابهم بطاء.
The people were slow, if their mounts were slow.
