Al-fāh, al-fūh (with damma), al-fīh (with kasra), al-fūhah, and al-famm are all equivalent.

Because famm's origin is fūh, the hā' was dropped, like it was dropped from sanah. The wāw remained at the end, mobile, so it had to be replaced by an alif due to the preceding fatḥah. Thus, it became fā. Since a name cannot be two letters with one being tanwīn, it was replaced by a consonant similar to it, which is mīm, because both are labial.

And the mīm is in the mouth, resembling the extension of the wāw. Its dual forms are famān, famawān, and famayān, the latter two being rare.
والفوه، محركة: سعة الفم، أو أن تخرج الأسنان من الشفتين مع طولها، وهو أفوه، وهي فوهاء.
