Al-thaman, with damma, or two dammahs, or like amir: a part of eight, or this applies to these fractions, plural: athman.
And thammunahum: he took the price of their property.
And kaḍarbihim: he was the eighth of them.
And thaman, like kaiman: a number, and not derived from a relation, or originally related to al-thaman, because it is the part that made seven into eight, so it is its eighth. Then they opened its first letter, because they change in derivations, and removed one of the two 'ya' of derivation, and replaced it with alif, as they did with what is derived from Yemen. So its 'ya' remained upon addition, as the 'ya' of al-qadi remained. So you say: thamani niswah, and thamani mi'ah.
And it drops with tanwin in the nominative and genitive cases, and remains in the accusative case.

Its correct form should have been thamani 'ashrah, but it was omitted according to the dialect of those who say ṭiwāl al-ayd.
And ka-mu'aẓẓam: that which was made to have eight corners, and the poisoned one, and the feverish one.
And al-thamin, with kasr: the eighth night of the camels' thirst.
And athmana: his camels arrived at the eighth day of thirst, and al-qawm: they became eight.

And an Arab informed Kisra of good news, so he said: 'Ask me whatever you wish.' He said: 'I ask you for eighty sheep.'
And it was said: 'More foolish than the owner of eighty sheep.'
