And he sought the thing as noble: he asked for it as noble, or found it noble.

And he abstained from it, and they abstained: they distanced themselves.

وَكَسْكَرَى: قَرْيَةٌ بِتِكْرِيتَ

And Kaskara: a village in Tikrit.

وَكَرِمَ السَّحَابُ تَكْرِيمًا، وَتُضَمُّ كَافُهُ: كَثُرَ مَاؤُهُ

And the clouds became abundant with water, takreeman, and its kaf is damma'd: its water became abundant.

And Al-Karimatan: the two eyes, and they were named: Karam, like Jabal, Kitab, Aziz, Zubayr, Safinah, Mu'azzam, and Mukarram.

وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ كَرَامٍ، كَشَدَّادٍ: إِمَامُ الْكَرَامِيَّةِ الْقَائِلُ بِأَنَّ مَعْبُودَهُ مُسْتَقِرٌّ عَلَى الْعَرْشِ، وَأَنَّهُ جَوْهَرٌ، تَعَالَى اللَّهُ عَنْ ذَلِكَ

And Muhammad ibn Karam, like Shaddad: the imam of the Karamiyya who says that his deity is settled on the Throne, and that it is a substance, may God be exalted above that.

وَالتَّكْرِمَةُ: التَّكْرِيمُ، وَالْوِسَادَةُ

And At-Takrimah: honoring, and a cushion.

وَكَرْمَانِيُّ بْنُ عَمْرٍو، بِالْكَسْرِ: مُحَدِّثٌ

And Karminiya and it is lightened, or Karminah: a place in Bukhara.

وَأَكْرَمَ: أَتَى بِأَوْلَادٍ كِرَامٍ

And he had noble offspring: he brought forth noble children.

{رِزْقًا كَرِيمًا}: كَثِيرًا

{Abundant provision}: plentiful.

{قَوْلًا كَرِيمًا}: سَهْلًا لَيِّنًا

{Pleasant speech}: easy and gentle.

وَفِي الْحَدِيثِ: "لَا تُسَمُّوا الْعِنَبَ الْكَرْمَ، فَإِنَّمَا الْكَرْمُ الرَّجُلُ الْمُسْلِمُ"

And in the hadith: 'Do not name grapes Karam, for only the Muslim man is Karam.'

وَلَيْسَ الْغَرَضُ حَقِيقَةَ النَّهْيِ عَنْ تَسْمِيَتِهِ كَرْمًا، وَلَكِنَّهُ رَمْزٌ إِلَى أَنَّ هَذَا النَّوْعَ مِنْ غَيْرِ الْأَنَاسِيِّ الْمُسَمَّى بِالِاسْمِ الْمُشْتَقِّ مِنَ الْكَرَمِ، أَنْتُمْ أَحِقَّاءُ أَنْ لَا تُؤَهِّلُوهُ لِهَذِهِ التَّسْمِيَةِ غَيْرَةً لِلْمُسْلِمِ التَّقِيِّ أَنْ يُشَارِكَ فِيمَا سَمَّاهُ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى، وَخَصَّهُ بِأَنْ جَعَلَهُ صِفَتَهُ، فَضْلًا أَنْ تُسَمُّوا بِالْكَرِيمِ مَنْ لَيْسَ بِمُسْلِمٍ

And the purpose is not the actual prohibition of naming it Karam, but rather a symbol that this type, which is not human and is named with a word derived from Karam, you are more deserving not to qualify it for this naming, out of zeal for the pious Muslim not to share in what God Almighty has named, and singled out by making it His attribute, let alone naming someone who is not a Muslim as Kareem.

فَكَأَنَّهُ قَالَ: إِنْ تَأْتِ لَكُمْ أَنْ لَا تُسَمُّوهُ مَثَلًا بِاسْمِ الْكَرْمِ، وَلَكِنْ بِالْجَفْنَةِ أَوِ الْحَبْلَةِ، فَافْعَلُوا

So it is as if He said: If it is possible for you not to name it, for example, with the name Karam, but rather with Al-Jafnah or Al-Hablah, then do so.

وَقَوْلُهُ: "فَإِنَّمَا الْكَرْمُ"، أَيْ: فَإِنَّمَا الْمُسْتَحِقُّ لِلِاسْمِ الْمُشْتَقِّ مِنَ الْكَرَمِ الْمُسْلِمُ

And His saying: 'For only Karam', meaning: for only the Muslim is deserving of the name derived from Karam.
