And 'thumma': is a particle that implies three things: participation in the ruling, or it may be omitted by being superfluous, as in: {There is no refuge from Allah but to Him. Then He turned to them in mercy.}

والثالث: المهلة، أو قد تتخلف، كقولك: أعجبني ما صنعت اليوم، ثم ما صنعت أمس أعجب، لأن ثم فيه لترتيب الإخبار ولا تراخي بين الإخبارين.

And 'thamma', with fatha: is a noun used for indication, meaning 'there', an adverb for a distant place, indeclinable.

And 'ath-thamthama': covering the mouth of the vessel, and holding back. It is said: 'Thamthamu bina sa'ah' (They held us back for an hour), and not doing work well, and hanging the waterskin to the pole so that milk is collected in it.
وهذا سيف لا يثمثم نصله: لا ينثني إذا ضرب به، ولا يرتد.
And this is a sword whose blade does not 'yathmathim': it does not bend when struck with it, nor does it recoil.
والمثم، كمسن: من يرعى على من لا راعي له، ويفقر من لا ظهر له، ويثم ما عجز عنه الحي من أمرهم.
And 'al-mathm', like 'musinn': one who grazes livestock belonging to someone without a shepherd, and impoverishes those who have no support, and completes what the living are unable to do of their affairs.
وتثمثم عنه: توقف.
And 'tathmathama 'anhu': he stopped.
وما تثمثم: ما تلعثم.
And 'ma tathmathama': he did not stammer.
