فَقَالَ: زَوِّجْنِي رَقَاشَ أُخْتَكَ
He said: 'Marry me to Ruqash, your sister.'
فَقَالَتْ لِلْغُلَامِ: ادْخُلْ عَلَى أَهْلِكَ
So she said to the youth: 'Go to your family.'
فَلَمَّا رَآهُ جَذِيمَةُ، قَالَ: مَا هَذَا؟
And when Jadhima saw him, he said: 'What is this?'
فَأَطْرَقَ جَذِيمَةُ
So Jadhima lowered his head.
فَلَمَّا أُخْبِرَ عَدِيٌّ بِذَلِكَ خَافَ، فَهَرَبَ
And when Adi was informed of that, he became afraid, so he fled.
فَأَتَتْ بِابْنٍ سَمَّتْهُ جَذِيمَةَ عَمْرًا، وَتَبَنَّاهُ
So she came with a son whom she named Jadhima 'Amr, and he adopted him.
وَكَانَ عَمْرٌو لَا يَأْكُلُ مِنْهُ، وَيَأْتِي بِهِ كَمَا هُوَ، وَيَقُولُ: هَذَا جِنَايَ وَخِيَارُهُ فِيهِ
And 'Amr would not eat from it, and he would bring it as it was, saying: 'This is my harvest, and its best part is in it.'
إِذْ كُلُّ جَانٍّ يَدُهُ إِلَى فِيهِ
For every harvester, his hand is to his mouth.
فَاسْتُطِيرَ، فَفُقِدَ زَمَانًا، فُضُرِبَ فِي الآفَاقِ، فَلَمْ يُوجَدْ
So he was carried away, and was lost for a time, and he was searched for in the horizons, but was not found.
فَبَيْنَمَا هُمَا بِوَادٍ فِي السَّمَاوَةِ، انْتَهَى إِلَيْهِمَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَدِيٍّ
And while they were in a valley in Al-Samawah, 'Amr ibn Adi reached them.
فَقَالَا لِجَارِيَةٍ مَعَهُمَا: أَطْعِمِينَا
So they said to a slave girl with them: 'Feed us.'
فَأَشَارَ عَمْرٌو إِلَيْهَا: أَنْ أَطْعِمِينِي
And 'Amr gestured to her: 'Feed me.'
فَقَالَتِ الجَارِيَةُ: "لَا تُطْعِمِ العَبْدَ الكُرَاعَ فَيَطْمَعَ فِي الذِّرَاعِ"
And the slave girl said: 'Do not give the slave the leg bone, lest he covet the arm bone.'
فَعَرَفَهُ وَضَمَّهُ وَقَبَّلَهُ، وَقَالَ لَهُمَا: حُكْمُكُمَا!
So he recognized him, embraced him, and kissed him, and said to them: 'Your judgment!'
فَسَأَلَاهُ مُنَادَمَتَهُ، فَلَمْ يَزَالا نَدِيمَيْهِ
So they asked him to be their companion, and they remained his confidants.
فَأَدْخَلَتْهُ الحَمَّامَ، وَأَلْبَسَتْهُ وَطَوَّقَتْهُ طَوْقًا كَانَ لَهُ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ
So she took him to the bath, dressed him, and adorned him with a golden collar that he had.
فَلَمَّا رَآهُ جَذِيمَةُ، قَالَ: كَبِرَ عَمْرٌو عَنِ الطَّوْقِ.
And when Jadhima saw him, he said: 'Amr has grown too old for the collar.'
وَالأَطْوَاقُ: لَبَنُ النَّارِجِيلِ، وَهُوَ مُسْكِرٌ جِدًّا
And 'al-Atwaq': the milk of the coconut palm, and it is very intoxicating.
وَالطَّوْقَةُ: أَرْضٌ تَسْتَدِيرُ سَهْلَةٌ بَيْنَ أَرْضَيْنِ غِلَاظٍ.
And 'al-Tawqah': a land that is round and flat, situated between two rough lands.
وَالطَّاقُ: مَا عُطِفَ مِنَ الأَبْنِيَةِ، ج: طَاقَاتٌ وَطِيقَانٌ
And 'al-Taq': what is bent of buildings, plural: taqat and tiqan.
وَنَاشِزٌ يَنْدُرُ مِنَ الجَبَلِ، كَالطَّائِقِ، وَكَذَلِكَ فِي البِئْرِ
And a protrusion that juts out from the mountain, like 'al-Taa'iq', and similarly in a well.
وَيُقَالُ: طَاقُ نَعْلٍ، وَطَاقَةُ رَيْحَانٍ.
And it is said: 'Taq na'l', and 'Taqat rayhan.'
وَطَوَّقْتُكَهُ: كَلَّفْتُكَهُ.
And 'tawwaqtuka-hu': I tasked you with it.
وَطَوَّقَنِي اللهُ أَدَاءَ حَقِّهِ: قَوَّانِي عَلَيْهِ.
And 'tawwaqani Allahu ada'a haqqihi': God empowered me to fulfill His right.
وَطَوَّعَتْ لَهُ نَفْسُهُ: طَاوَعَتْ، أَيْ: رَخُصَتْ وَسَهَلَتْ
And 'tawwa'at lahu nafsuhu': his soul was compliant, meaning: it became easy and facilitated.
وَقُرِئَ: {وَعَلَى الَّذِينَ يُطَوِّقُونَهُ}، أَيْ: يُجْعَلُ كَالطَّوْقِ فِي أَعْنَاقِهِمْ.
And it was recited: {And upon those who are made to wear it like a collar}, meaning: it is made like a collar around their necks.
يُطَوِّقُونَهُ: أَصْلُهُ: يَتَطَوَّقُونَهُ، قُلِبَتِ التَّاءُ طَاءً وَأُدْغِمَتْ.
