So they came upon them as they were sitting down for lunch, and Amr said: 'Let not war ignite between us and you.'
فَقَالَ: كَلَّا، بَلْ أَقْتُلُكَ وَأَقْتُلُ إِخْوَتَكَ
He said: 'No, rather I will kill you and kill your brothers.'
فَإِنْ كُنْتَ فَاعِلاً فَأَطْلِقْ هَؤُلَاءِ الَّذِينَ لَمْ يَتَلَبَّسُوا بِالحُرُوبِ، فَإِنَّ وَرَاءَهُمْ طَالِبًا أَطْلُبُ مِنِّي يَعْنِي أَبَاهُمْ فَقَتَلَهُمْ
If you are going to do it, then release these who have not been involved in wars, for behind them is a pursuer seeking me, meaning their father, so he killed them.
وَجَعَلَ رُؤُوسَهُمْ فِي مِخْلَاةٍ، وَعَلَّقَهَا فِي عُنُقِ نَاقَةٍ لَهُمْ يُقَالُ لَهَا الدَّهِيمُ
And he placed their heads in a saddlebag and hung it on the neck of their she-camel called Al-Dahim.
فَجَاءَتِ النَّاقَةُ، وَالزِّبَانُ جَالِسٌ أَمَامَ بَيْتِهِ، فَبَرَكَتْ، فَقَامَتِ الجَارِيَةُ فَجَسَّتِ المِخْلَاةَ، فَقَالَتْ: قَدْ أَصَابَ بَنُوكَ بِيضَ النَّعَامِ
So the she-camel came, and Al-Zubān was sitting in front of his house, and she knelt. Then the slave girl stood up and felt the saddlebag, and she said: 'Your sons have found ostrich eggs.'
فَأَدْخَلَتْ يَدَهَا فَأَخْرَجَتْ رَأْسَ عَمْرٍو ثُمَّ رُؤُوسَ إِخْوَتِهِ
So she put her hand in and took out Amr's head, then the heads of his brothers.
فَغَسَلَهَا الزِّبَانُ، وَوَضَعَهَا عَلَى تُرْسٍ، وَقَالَ: "آخِرُ البَزِّ عَلَى القَلُوصِ"
So Al-Zubān washed them, placed them on a shield, and said: 'The last of the spoils on the young camel.'
فَذَهَبَتْ مَثَلاً، أَيْ: هَذَا آخِرُ عَهْدِي بِهِمْ، لَا أَرَاهُمْ بَعْدَهُ
And it became a proverb, meaning: This is my last encounter with them; I will not see them after this.
وَيُقَالُ لِلرَّجُلِ الصَّحِيحِ: هُوَ أَصَحُّ مِنَ الخُوتَعَةِ
And it is said of a healthy man: He is healthier than Al-Khawta'ah.
وَالخُتْعَةُ: أُنْثَى النُّمُورِ
