فقال: الخيل الخيل، ويضرط حتى مات

He said: 'The cavalry, the cavalry!' and he passed gas until he died.

أو رجلان منهم خرجا في فلاة فلاحت لهم شجرة فقال أحدهما: أرى قوما قد رصدونا فقال رفيقه: إنما هي عشرة، فظنه يقول: عشرة، فجعل يقول: وما غناء اثنين عن عشرة، وضرط حتى نزف روحه، فسمي المنزوف ضرطا.

Or two men from them went out into a desert, and a tree appeared to them. One said: 'I see people who have ambushed us.' His companion said: 'It is only ten.' He thought he said: 'Ten.' So he kept saying: 'What good are two against ten?' and he passed gas until his spirit was drained, so he was named 'al-manzūf ḍaraṭan'.

Or it is an animal between a dog and a cat, which, when it is shouted at, passes gas out of fear.

أودى العير إلا ضرطا

The donkey perished except for its flatulence.

يضرب للذليل، وللشيخ، ولفساد الشيء حتى لا يبقى منه إلا ما لا ينتفع به، أي: لم يبق من قوته إلا الضراط.
