وَمِنْهُ المَثَلُ "مِنْكَ رَبَضُكَ، وَإِنْ كَانَ سَمَّارًا"

And from it is the proverb: 'From you is your rabḍ, even if they are dark-skinned,' meaning: from you are your family and servants, even if they are negligent.

وَالنَّاحِيَةُ، وَسَفِيفٌ كَالنِّطَاقِ يُجْعَلُ فِي حُقْوَي النَّاقَةِ حَتَّى يُجَاوِزَ الوَرِكَيْنِ

And the region, and a strap like a belt made for the she-camel's hindquarters until it passes the hips.

وَكُلُّ مَا يُؤْوَى إِلَيْهِ وَيُسْتَرَاحُ لَدَيْهِ مِنْ أَهْلٍ وَقَرِيبٍ وَمَالٍ وَبَيْتٍ وَنَحْوِهِ ج: أَرْبَاضٌ

And everything to which one retreats and finds rest, such as family, relatives, wealth, a house, and the like; plural: arbāḍ.

وَرَبَضَتِ الشَّاةُ تَرْبِضُ رَبْضًا وَرَبْضَةً وَرُبُوضًا وَرَبْضَةً حَسَنَةً، بِالكَسْرِ: كَبَرِكَتْ فِي الإِبِلِ

And the sheep lay down, resting, lying down, and a good resting, with kasr: like camels kneeling.

وَقَوْلُهُ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، لِلضَّحَّاكِ، وَقَدْ بَعَثَهُ إِلَى قَوْمِهِ: "إِذَا أَتَيْتَهُمْ فَارْبِضْ فِي دَارِهِمْ ظَبْيًا"

And his saying, peace be upon him, to Al-Ḍaḥḥāk, when he sent him to his people: 'When you come to them, settle in their homes like a gazelle.'

أَيْ: أَقِمْ آمِنًا كَالظَّبْيِ فِي كِنَاسِهِ، أَوْ لاَ تَأْمَنْهُمْ، بَلْ كُنْ يَقِظًا مُتَوَحِّشًا، فَإِنَّكَ بَيْنَ أَظْهُرِ الكَفَرَةِ

Meaning: stay safe like a gazelle in its lair, or do not trust them, but rather be vigilant and wary, for you are among the disbelievers.

وَالرُّوَيْبِضَةُ: تَصْغِيرُ الرَّابِضَةِ، وَهُوَ الرَّجُلُ التَّافِهُ أَيْ: الحَقِيرُ يَنْطِقُ فِي أَمْرِ العَامَّةِ

And al-ruwaybiḍah: the diminutive of al-rābiḍah, which is the trivial man, meaning: the contemptible one who speaks on public matters.

وَهَذَا تَفْسِيرُ النَّبِيِّ، صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، لِلْكَلِمَةِ

And this is the Prophet's explanation, peace be upon him, of the word.

وَالرَّابِضَةُ: مَلاَئِكَةٌ أُهْبِطُوا مَعَ آدَمَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ

And al-rābiḍah: angels who were sent down with Adam, peace be upon him.

وَكَصَبُورٍ: الشَّجَرَةُ العَظِيمَةُ الوَاسِعَةُ ج: رَبَضٌ

And like ṣabūr: the large, wide tree; plural: rabḍ.

وَالكَثِيرَةُ الأَهْلِ مِنَ القُرَى، وَالضَّخْمَةُ مِنَ السَّلاَسِلِ، وَالوَاسِعَةُ مِنَ الدُّرُوعِ

And the populous of villages, and the massive of chains, and the spacious of armor.

وَالرَّابِضَانِ: التُّرْكُ، وَالحَبَشَةُ

And al-rābiḍān: the Turks, and the Abyssinians.

وَالرَّبِيضُ: الغَنَمُ بِرُعَاتِهَا المُجْتَمِعَةُ فِي مَرَابِضِهَا، وَمُجْتَمَعُ الحَوَايَا، كَالمَرْبَضِ، كَمَجْلِسٍ وَمَقْعَدٍ

And al-rabīḍ: sheep with their shepherds gathered in their resting places, and the gathering of the entrails, like al-marbaḍ, like majlis and maqʿad.

وَكَتِنَّانٍ: الأَسَدُ

And like tinnān: the lion.

وَرَبَضَهُ يَرْبِضُهُ وَيَرْبِضُهُ: آوَى إِلَيْهِ

And rabḍahu yarbiḍuhu wa yarbiḍuhu: to take shelter with him.

وَالكَبْشُ عَنِ الغَنَمِ يَرْبِضُ: تَرَكَ سِفَادَهَا وَعَدَلَ، أَوْ عَجَزَ عَنْهَا

And the ram from the ewes abstains: he leaves their mating and turns away, or is unable to serve them.

وَالأَسَدُ عَلَى فَرِيسَتِهِ، وَالقَرْنُ عَلَى قَرْنِهِ: بَرَكَ

And the lion upon its prey, and the horned animal upon its horn: it knelt.

وَاللَّيْلُ: أَلْقَى بِنَفْسِهِ

And the night: it cast itself down.

وَالتِّرْبَاضُ، بِالكَسْرِ: العُصْفُرُ

And al-tirbāḍ, with kasr: safflower.

وَأَرْبَضَ أَهْلَهُ: قَامَ بِنَفَقَتِهِمْ

And arbāḍa ahlahu: he provided for their expenses.

وَالشَّمْسُ: اشْتَدَّ حَرُّهَا

And the sun: its heat intensified.

وَالإِنَاءُ القَوْمَ: أَرْوَاهُمْ حَتَّى ثَقُلُوا وَنَامُوا مُمْتَدِّينَ عَلَى الأَرْضِ

And the vessel for the people: it made them thirsty until they became heavy and slept stretched out on the ground.

وَتَرْبِيضُ السِّقَاءِ: أَنْ تَجْعَلَ فِيهِ مَا يَغْمُرُ قَعْرَهُ

And tarbīḍ al-siqāʾ: to put in it what covers its bottom.
