إنما يقال أوفيت بالعهد ووفيت بالعهد

فمررت بقوم تقرض شفاههم كلما قرضت وفت أي تمت وطالت

ألست تنتجها وافية أعينها وآذانها

إنكم وفيتم سبعين أمة أنتم خيرها وأكرمها على الله أي تمت العدة سبعين أمة بكم

And likewise I overlooked it and I came to it.

وأوفيت على شرف من الأرض إذا أشرفت عليه، فأنا موف

And I ascended to a high place from the land when I overlooked it, so I am one who overlooks.

وأوفى على الشيء أي أشرف

And to overlook something means to ascend to it.

أوفى على سلع أي أشرف واطلع

He overlooked Sal' meaning he ascended and looked.

ووافى فلان: أتى

And so-and-so arrived: he came.

وتوافى القوم: تتاموا

And the people came together: they became complete.

ووافيت فلانا بمكان كذا

And I met so-and-so at such-and-such a place.

ووفى الشيء: كثر

And the thing was abundant: it was numerous.

ووفى ريش الجناح فهو واف

And the feathers of the wing were abundant, so it is 'wafi'.

وكل شيء بلغ تمام الكمال فقد وفى وتم

And everything that reached the peak of perfection has been fulfilled and completed.

وكذلك درهم واف يعني به أنه يزن مثقالا، وكيل واف

And likewise a full dirham, meaning it weighs a mithqal, and a full measure.

ووفى الدرهم المثقال: عادله

And the dirham equaled the mithqal: it matched it.

والوافي: درهم وأربعة دوانيق

And al-wafi: a dirham and four daniqs.

هو الذي وفى مثقالا

It is that which equals a mithqal.

وقيل: درهم واف وفى بزنته لا زيادة فيه ولا نقص

And it was said: a full dirham, fulfilling its weight with no increase or decrease.

وكل ما تم من كلام وغيره فقد وفى وأوفيته أنا

And everything that is complete, whether speech or otherwise, has been fulfilled, and I have fulfilled it.

أوفيت الزرع وفوق الإيفاء وعداه إلى مفعولين

I completed the planting, and above completion, and it made it transitive to two objects.

والوافي من الشعر: ما استوفى في الاستعمال عدة أجزائه في دائرته

And al-wafi of poetry: that which has completed in usage the number of its parts in its meter.

مات فلان وأنت بوفاء أي بطول عمر

So-and-so died, and you have longevity, meaning a long life.

وأوفى الرجل حقه ووفاه إياه بمعنى: أكمله له وأعطاه وافيا

And the man completed his right and he fulfilled it for him, meaning: he completed it for him and gave it to him fully.

ووجد الله عنده فوفاه حسابه

And God found with him, so He completed his account for him.

وتوفاه هو منه واستوفاه: لم يدع منه شيئا

وإنه لميفاء على الأشراف أي لا يزال يوفي عليها، وكذلك الحمار

And indeed he is one who overlooks the nobles, meaning he always ascends to them, and likewise the donkey.

عيران ميفاء على الرزون

Two wild asses, high-ground dwellers on the heights.

والوفي من الأرض: الشرف يوفى عليه

And the loyal one from the land: the high ground upon which one ascends.

والميفى والميفاة، مقصوران، كذلك

And al-mifa and al-mifatah, shortened, are likewise.

الميفاة الموضع الذي يوفي فوقه البازي لإيناس الطير أو غيره

Al-mifatah: the place where the falcon perches to spot birds or other prey.

ميفاء رؤوس فوره

A place of ascent over the tops of its peaks.

خلب ميفاك حتى ينضج الرودق

Cover your pot lid until the roast is cooked.

والوفاة: المنية

And al-wafah: death.

والوفاة: الموت

And al-wafah: death.

توفي فلان وتوفاه الله إذا قبض نفسه

So-and-so died, and God took his soul when He seized his soul.

إذا قبض روحه

When He seized his soul.

توفي الميت استيفاء مدته التي وفيت له وعدد أيامه وشهوره وأعوامه في الدنيا

The deceased completed the full term allotted to him and the number of his days, months, and years in this world.

وتوفيت المال منه واستوفيته إذا أخذته كله

And I took the money from him and I received it fully if I took all of it.

وتوفيت عدد القوم إذا عددتهم كلهم

And I completed the count of the people if I counted all of them.

إن بني الأدرد ليسوا من أحد، ... ولا توفاهم قريش في العدد

Indeed, the sons of Al-Adrad are not from anyone, ... and Quraysh does not complete their number with them.

الله يتوفى الأنفس حين موتها

God takes souls at the time of their death.

أي يستوفي مدد آجالهم في الدنيا

Meaning He completes the duration of their lifespans in this world.

توفي النائم فهو استيفاء وقت عقله وتمييزه إلى أن نام

The sleeper completed (his time), meaning the completion of the time of his intellect and discernment until he slept.

قل يتوفاكم ملك الموت

Say: The angel of death will take you fully.

هو من توفية العدد، تأويله أن يقبض أرواحكم أجمعين فلا ينقص واحد منكم

It is from completing the count, meaning He will seize all your souls so that not one of you is missed.

كما تقول: قد استوفيت من فلان وتوفيت منه ما لي عليه؛ تأويله أن لم يبق عليه شيء

As you say: I have taken fully from so-and-so and completed from him what is due to me; meaning nothing remains with him.

حتى إذا جاءتهم رسلنا يتوفونهم

Until when Our messengers come to them, they take them fully.

يكون حتى إذا جاءتهم ملائكة الموت يتوفونهم سألوهم عند المعاينة فيعترفون عند موتهم أنهم كانوا كافرين

It means until when the angels of death come to them, they take them fully, and they ask them upon seeing them, and they confess at their death that they were disbelievers.

ويجوز أن يكون، والله أعلم، حتى إذا جاءتهم ملائكة العذاب يتوفونهم، فيكون يتوفونهم في هذا الموضع على ضربين

And it is permissible, and God knows best, that until when the angels of torment come to them, they take them fully, and 'yatawaffunahum' in this place is of two types.

يتوفونهم عذابا وهذا كما تقول: قد قتلت فلانا بالعذاب وإن لم يمت

They take them fully with torment, and this is like your saying: I have killed so-and-so with torment, even if he did not die.

ويجوز أن يكون يتوفون عدتهم، وهو أضعف الوجهين

And it is permissible that they take their count fully, and this is the weaker of the two opinions.

وقد وافاه حمامه

And his doom has met him.

ليت القيامة، يوم توفي مصعب، ... قامت على مضر وحق قيامها

Would that the Day of Resurrection, the day Mus'ab is completed, ... had stood over Mudar and truly stood.

And it is as if you met him, the day you met her... from the wild beasts of Wajrah, a tied and bound one.

وقيل: موافي قد وافى جسمه جسم أمه أي صار مثلها

And it was said: Muwafi, its body has met its mother's body, meaning it became like her.
