المطو: الجد والنجاء في السير، وقد مطا مطوا
Al-maṭw: seriousness and success in travel, and he traveled with endurance, traveling.
مطوت بهم حتى يكل غريهم، ... وحتى الجياد ما يقدن بأرسان
I urged them on until their mounts grew weary, ... and even the fine steeds could not be controlled by their reins.
ومطا إذا فتح عينيه، وأصل المطو المد في هذا.
And he opened his eyes wide, and the origin of al-maṭw is the stretching in this.
ومطا إذا تمطى.
And he stretched when he stretched himself.
ومطا الشيء مطوا: مده.
And he stretched the thing, stretching it: he extended it.
ومطا بالقوم مطوا: مد بهم.
And he extended the journey with the people, extending it for them.
وتمطى الرجل: تمدد.
And the man stretched himself: he extended himself.
والتمطي: التبختر ومد اليدين في المشي
And strutting: boasting and extending the hands in walking.
وهو مثل تظنيت من الظن وتقضيت من التقضض
And it is like 'I suspected' from suspicion and 'I broke' from breaking.
والمطواء من التمطي على وزن الغلواء
And al-miṭwāʾ is from al-tamattī on the pattern of al-ghilwāʾ.
شممتها إذ كرهت شميمي، ... فهي تمطى كمطا المحموم
I smelled it when I disliked my smelling it, ... so she stretched herself like the one suffering from fever.
وإذا تمطى على الحمى فذلك المطواء
And when he stretches himself due to fever, that is al-miṭwāʾ.
وفي الحديث: إذا مشت أمتي المطيطا ، بالمد والقصر؛ هي مشية فيها تبختر ومد اليدين.
And in the Hadith: When my Ummah walks with al-miṭīṭā, with lengthening and shortening; it is a walk with boasting and extending the hands.
ويقال: مطوت ومططت بمعنى مددت
And it is said: I stretched and I stretched, meaning I extended.
وهي من المصغرات التي لم يستعمل لها مكبر
And it is from the diminutives for which no augmentative is used.
وقوله تعالى: ثم ذهب إلى أهله يتمطى ؛ أي يتبختر
And His saying, the Almighty: Then he went to his family, strutting; meaning boasting.
ويقال: مطوت بالقوم مطوا إذا مددت بهم في السير.
And it is said: I extended the journey with the people, extending it for them in travel.
وفي حديث أبي بكر، رضي الله عنه: أنه مر على بلال وقد مطي في الشمس يعذب فاشتراه وأعتقه
And in the narration of Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him: He passed by Bilal who was being stretched out in the sun and tortured, so he bought him and freed him.
معنى مطي أي مد وبطح في الشمس.
The meaning of muṭṭiya is to be stretched and laid out in the sun.
وكل شيء مددته فقد مطوته؛ ومنه المطو في السير.
And everything you stretch, you have stretched it; and from it is al-maṭw in travel.
ومطا الرجل يمطو إذا سار سيرا حسنا؛ قال رؤبة:
And the man traveled, traveling well; Ru'bah said:
به تمطت غول كل ميله، ... بنا حراجيج المطي النفه
By it, the ghoul of every inclination stretched, ... carrying us, the swift, enduring mounts.
تمطت بنا أي سارت بنا سيرا طويلا ممدودا
Tamattat binā means it traveled with us a long, extended journey.
ويروى: بنا حراجيج المهاري النفه
And it is narrated: carrying us, the swift, enduring camels.
تمطت به أمه في النفاس، ... فليس بيتن ولا توأم
His mother carried him for an extended period during pregnancy, ... so it was not a nine-month pregnancy nor twins.
يريد أنها زادت على تسعة أشهر حتى نضجته وجرت حمله
He means she exceeded nine months until he was mature and her pregnancy was completed.
تمطت به بيضاء فرع نجيبة ... هجان، وبعض الوالدات غرام
A pure-bred, noble white she-camel carried him, ... and some mothers are a burden.
وتمتى: كتمطى على البدل
And tamattā: like tamattā by substitution.
فقال: من شدة التمتي في السجود.
He said: From the intensity of stretching during prostration.
وتمطى النهار: امتد وطال، وقيل: كل ما امتد وطال فقد تمطى.
And the day stretched: it extended and became long, and it is said: everything that extends and becomes long has stretched.
وتمطى بهم السفر: امتد وطال، وتمطى بك العهد كذلك
And the journey stretched for them: it extended and became long, and the covenant stretched with you likewise.
والاسم من كل ذلك المطواء.
And the noun from all of that is al-miṭwāʾ.
والمطاة والمطا أيضا: التمطي؛ عن الزجاجي، حكاه في الجمل قرنه بالمطا الذي هو الظهر.
And al-maṭāh and al-maṭā also: strutting; according to Al-Zajjaji, he mentioned it in Al-Jumal, linking it to al-maṭā which is the back.
والمطية من الدواب التي تمط في سيرها، وهو مأخوذ من المطو أي المد.
And al-maṭiyyah is from the animals that travel with endurance in their journey, and it is derived from al-maṭw, meaning extension.
متى أنام لا يؤرقني الكري ... ليلا، ولا أسمع أجراس المطي
When shall I sleep without the night disturbing me ... at night, nor hear the bells of the mounts.
أن مطاياك لمن خير المطي؟
That your mounts are among the best of riding animals?
وقد مطت مطوا.
And she traveled, traveling.
وامتطاها: اتخذها مطية.
And he mounted it: he took it as a mount.
وامتطاها وأمطاها: جعلها مطيته.
And he mounted it and made it a mount: he made it his mount.
والمطية: الناقة التي يركب مطاها.
And al-maṭiyyah: the she-camel whose back is ridden.
والمطية: البعير يمتطى ظهره، وجمعه المطايا، يقع على الذكر والأنثى.
And al-maṭiyyah: the camel whose back is ridden, and its plural is al-maṭāyā, referring to male and female.
والمطية واحدة المطي والمطايا، والمطي واحد وجمع، يذكر ويؤنث، والمطايا فعالى، أصله فعائل إلا أنه فعل به ما فعل بخطايا.
And al-maṭiyyah is singular of al-maṭī and al-maṭāyā, and al-maṭī is singular and plural, masculine and feminine, and al-maṭāyā is faʿālā, its origin is faʿāʾil, but it was treated as khaṭāyā.
ومطية، ملث الظلام، بعثته ... يشكو الكلال إلي دامي الأظلل
And a mount, in the darkness, I sent it ... complaining of fatigue to me, my bleeding shade.
يقال منه امتطيتها أي اتخذتها مطية.
It is said from it: I mounted it, meaning I took it as a mount.
امتطيناها أي جعلناها مطايانا.
We mounted them, meaning we made them our mounts.
تركت المخ رارا والمطي هارا
I left the marrow abundant and the mounts weak.
المطي: جمع مطية وهي الناقة التي يركب مطاها أي ظهرها، ويقال: يمطى بها في السير أي يمد، والهار: الساقط الضعيف.
Al-maṭī: plural of maṭiyyah, which is the she-camel whose back is ridden, meaning its back, and it is said: it is stretched in travel, meaning extended, and al-hār: the fallen, the weak.
والمطا، مقصور: الظهر لامتداده، وقيل: هو حبل المتن من عصب أو عقب أو لحم، والجمع أمطاء.
And al-maṭā, shortened: the back due to its extension, and it is said: it is the cord of the spine made of sinew, tendon, or flesh, and its plural is amṭāʾ.
والمطو: جريدة تشق بشقين ويحزم بها القت من الزرع، وذلك لامتدادها.
And al-maṭw: a palm leaf split in two and used to tie fodder from crops, due to its length.
والمطو: الشمراخ، بلغة بلحرث بن كعب، وكذلك التمطية، والجمع مطاء، والمطا، مقصور: لغة فيه؛ عن ابن الأعرابي.
And al-maṭw: the palm spathe, in the dialect of Bal-Harith ibn Ka'b, and likewise al-tamṭiyyah, and its plural is maṭāʾ, and al-maṭā, shortened: a variant for it; from Ibn Al-A'rabi.
وقال أبو حنيفة: المطو والمطو، بالكسر، عذق النخلة، والجمع مطاء مثل جرو وجراء
And Abu Hanifa said: al-maṭw and al-maṭw, with kasra, is the date palm spathe, and its plural is maṭāʾ like jarw and jarrāʾ.
تخدد عن كوافره المطاء
The palm spathes became visible from its spathes.
والمطو والمطو جميعا: الكباسة والعاسي؛ وأنشد أبو زياد:
And al-maṭw and al-maṭw both: the bunch of dates and the unripe dates; and Abu Ziyad recited:
وهتفوا وصرحوا يا أجلح، ... وكان همي كل مطو أملح
And they called out and declared, O Jalḥ, ... and my concern was every pleasant bunch of dates.
ومطا الرجل إذا أكل الرطب من الكباسة.
And the man ate, when he ate fresh dates from the bunch.
والمطو: سبل الذرة.
And al-maṭw: the tassels of corn.
والأمطي: الذي يعمل منه العلك، واللباية شجر الأمطي.
And al-amṭī: from which gum is made, and al-labāyah is the tree of al-amṭī.
ومطو الشيء: نظيره وصاحبه؛ وقال:
And maṭw of a thing: its counterpart and its companion; and he said:
ناديت مطوي، وقد مال النهار بهم، ... وعبرة العين جار دمعها سجم
I called out to my companion, as the day had worn on them, ... and the tears of the eye flowed continuously.
ومطا إذا صاحب صديقا.
And he befriended, when he befriended a friend.
ومطو الرجل: صديقه وصاحبه ونظيره، سروية، وقيل: مطوه صاحبه في السفر لأنه كان إذا قويس به فقد مد معه
And maṭw of a man: his friend, his companion, and his equal, from Sarwah. It is said: his companion traveled with him on the journey because if he became weak, he extended with him.
فظلت، لدى البيت الحرام، أخيله، ... ومطواي مشتاقان له أرقان
And I kept looking at it, near the Sacred House, ... and my two companions were longing, sleepless for it.
أي صاحباي، ومعنى أخيله أنظر إلى مخيلته، والهاء عائدة على البرق في بيت قبله، وهو: أرقت لبرق دونه شروان ... يمان، وأهوى البرق كل يمان
Meaning my two companions, and the meaning of 'akhīlahu' is I look at its appearance, and the 'ha' refers to lightning in a preceding verse, which is: I stayed awake for lightning beyond it, Shurawan ... from Yemen, and every lightning flash from Yemen.
والمطا أيضا: لغة فيه، والجمع أمطاء ومطي، الأخيرة اسم للجمع
And al-maṭā also: a variant for it, and its plural is amṭāʾ and maṭī, the latter being a collective noun.
لقد لاق المطي بنجد عفر ... حديث، إن عجبت له، عجيب
The mounts have encountered in Najd a dusty terrain ... a story, if you marvel at it, is wondrous.
والأمطي: صمغ يؤكل، سمي به لامتداده، وقيل: هو ضرب من نبات الرمل يمتد وينفرش.
And al-amṭī: an edible gum, named so for its stretchiness, and it is said: it is a type of sand plant that extends and spreads.
والأمطي شجر ينبت في الرمل قضبانا، وله علك يمضغ؛ قال العجاج ووصف ثور وحش:
And al-amṭī is a tree that grows in the sand in shoots, and it has a gum that is chewed; Al-A'jjaj said, describing a wild bull:
وبالفرنداد له أمطي
And in Al-Farindad, it has al-amṭī.
