أمدى الرجل إذا أسن
A man becomes amda if he grows old.
هو من مدى الغاية
It is from the limit of the furthest point.
ومدى الأجل: منتهاه
And the limit of the term: its end.
والمدى: الغاية
And al-madā: the limit.
مشتبه متيه تيهاؤه، ... إذا المدى لم يدر ما ميداؤه
Confusing, its wandering leading astray, ... when the limit does not know its extent.
ويقال: ما أدري ما ميداء هذا الأمر يعني قدره وغايته
And it is said: I do not know the midā' of this matter, meaning its measure and its limit.
وهذا بميداء أرض كذا إذا كان بحذائها
And this is at the midā' of such-and-such land if it is alongside it.
أن لهم الذمة وعليهم الجزية بلا عداء النهار مدى والليل سدى
That they have protection and owe the jizya without enmity, the day lasting and the night empty.
يقال: لا أفعله مدى الدهر أي طوله
It is said: I will not do it for the length of time.
وكتب خالد بن سعيد: المدى الغاية أي ذلك لهم أبدا ما كان النهار والليل سدى
And Khalid bin Sa'id wrote: Al-madā is the limit, meaning that is for them forever as long as the day and night are empty.
ويقال: قطعة أرض قدر مدى البصر، وقدر مد البصر أيضا
And it is said: A piece of land the extent of sight's reach, and also the extent of sight's reach.
المؤذن يغفر له مدى صوته
The muezzin is forgiven to the extent of his voice.
هو مني مدى البصر، ولا يقال مد البصر
It is from me to the extent of sight, and it is not said 'madd al-basar'.
وفلان أمدى العرب أي أبعدهم غاية في الغزو
And so-and-so is the amda of the Arabs, meaning the furthest of them in raiding.
ويقال: تمادى فلان في غيه إذا لج فيه، وأطال مدى غيه أي غايته
And it is said: So-and-so persisted in his error if he insisted on it, and prolonged the extent of his error, meaning its limit.
وفي حديث كعب بن مالك: فلم يزل ذلك يتمادى بي أي يتطاول ويتأخر
And in the hadith of Ka'b bin Malik: And that continued to be prolonged for me, meaning it became longer and delayed.
وفي الحديث الآخر: لو تمادى بي الشهر لواصلت
And in the other hadith: If the month had been prolonged for me, I would have continued fasting.
وأمدى الرجل إذا سقي لبنا فأكثر
And a man amda if he is given milk and drinks a lot.
والمدية والمدية: الشفرة
And al-madiyyah and al-madiyyah: the blade.
وفي الحديث: قلت يا رسول الله، إنا لاقو العدو غدا وليست معنا مدى
And in the hadith: I said, O Messenger of Allah, we will meet the enemy tomorrow and we do not have knives with us.
ولا تفلوا المدى بالاختلاف بينكم
And do not dull the blades by disagreeing among yourselves.
ومدية القوس «3» كبدها؛ عن ابن الأعرابي؛ وأنشد
And the madiyyah of the bow is its core; from Ibn al-A'rabi; and he recited.
والمدي، على فعيل: الحوض الذي ليست له نصائب
And al-madiyy, on the pattern of 'fa'eel': the basin that has no surrounding stones.
إذا أميل في المدي فاضا
When poured into the basin, it overflowed.
أثرت مديه، وأثرت عنه ... سواكن قد تبوأن الحصونا
I disturbed its basin, and disturbed from it ... inhabitants who had settled in the fortresses.
والمدي أيضا: جدول صغير يسيل فيه ما هريق من ماء البئر
And al-madiyy also: a small channel into which spilled well water flows.
والمدي والمدي: ما سال «4» من فروغ الدلو يسمى مديا ما دام يمد، فإذا استقر وأنتن فهو غرب
And al-madiyy and al-madiyy: what flows from the opening of the bucket is called madiyy as long as it flows, but if it settles and becomes foul, it is gharab.
المدي الماء الذي يسيل من الحوض ويخبث فلا يقرب
Al-madiyy is the water that flows from the basin and becomes foul, so it is not approached.
والمدي: من المكاييل معروف
And al-madiyy: is a known measure.
هو مكيال ضخم لأهل الشام وأهل مصر، والجمع أمداء
It is a large measure for the people of Syria and Egypt, and the plural is amdād.
والمدي مكيال يأخذ جريبا
And al-madiyy is a measure that takes a jarīb.
أن عليا، رضي الله عنه، أجرى للناس المديين والقسطين
That Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, distributed to the people two madiyy (measures) and two qist (measures).
يريد مديين من الطعام وقسطين من الزيت
He means two madiyy of food and two qist of oil.
البر بالبر مدي بمدي
Wheat for wheat, madiyy for madiyy.
والمدي مكيال لأهل الشام يسع خمسة عشر مكوكا
And al-madiyy is a measure for the people of Syria that holds fifteen makkūk.
