واعوج عودك من لحي ومن قدم، ... لا ينعم الغصن حتى ينعم الورق
And your branch has become crooked from peeling and from age, ... the branch does not flourish until the leaves flourish.
فإذا فعلتم ذلك سلط الله عليكم شرار خلقه فالتحوكم كما يلتحى القضيب
And if you do that, Allah will unleash upon you the worst of His creation, and they will strip you like a stick is stripped.
فإن لم يجد أحدكم إلا لحاء عنبة أو عود شجرة فليمضغه
And if one of you finds nothing but the peel of a grape or a stick of wood, let him chew it.
لألحونكم لحو العصا
I will strip you like the bark of a stick.
واللحاء: ما على العصا من قشرها، يمد ويقصر
And the bark: what is on the stick of its peel, it is elongated and shortened.
ولحاء كل شجرة: قشرها، ممدود، والجمع ألحية ولحي ولحي.
And the bark of every tree: its peel, elongated, and the plural is alhiyah, lihy, and lihy.
ولحاها يلحاها لحيا والتحاها: أخذ لحاءها.
And he peeled it, he stripped its bark, and he peeled it, he took its bark.
وألحى العود إذا أنى له أن يلحى قشره عنه.
And the stick became ready to peel when its time came for its bark to be removed.
واللحاء: قشر كل شيء.
And the bark: the peel of everything.
ولحوت العود ألحوه وألحاه إذا قشرته.
And I peeled the stick, I stripped it and I peeled it, if you peeled it.
والتحيت العصا ولحيتها التحاء ولحيا إذا قشرتها.
And you peeled the stick and stripped it, peeling and stripping, if you removed its bark.
فأما لحيت الرجل من اللوم فبالياء لا غير.
But as for blaming a man, it is with a ya, nothing else.
لا تدخل بين العصا ولحائها أي قشرتها
Do not get between the stick and its bark, meaning its peel.
لحوت شماسا كما تلحى العصا ... سبا، لو ان السب يدمي لدمي
I peeled Shammas like a stick is peeled... insulting, if insult drew blood, it would have drawn blood.
إذا أرادوا أن صاحب الرجل موافق له لا يخالفه في شيء قالوا بين العصا ولحائها
When they want to say that a man's companion agrees with him and does not disagree with him in anything, they say: 'between the stick and its bark'.
يقال للتمرة إنها لكثيرة اللحاء، وهو ما كسا النواة.
It is said of a date that it has much bark, which is what covers the pit.
لحينهم لحي العصا، فطردنهم ... إلى سنة، قردانها لم تحلم
We stripped them like the bark of a stick, and we drove them away... for a year, their rats had not fattened.
ولحا الرجل لحوا: شتمه
And a man insulted him, he insulted him: he cursed him.
نهيت عن ملاحاة الرجال أي مقاولتهم ومخاصمتهم
I was forbidden from arguing with men, meaning debating and disputing with them.
تلاحى رجلان فرفعت
Two men argued, and it was raised.
فَلَحْيَا لِصَاحِبِنَا لَحْيَا
So he blamed our companion, he blamed him.
ولحا الرجل يلحاه لحيا: لامه وشتمه وعنفه
And a man blamed him, he blamed him, he insulted him, and he rebuked him.
ولاحيته ملاحاة ولحاء إذا نازعته
And you argued with him, arguing and quarreling, if you disputed with him.
ولحاه الله لحيا أي قبحه ولعنه
And Allah cursed him, He cursed him, meaning He made him ugly and cursed him.
قالت، ولم تلح وكانت تلحي: ... عليك سيب الخلفاء البجح
She said, and she was not blamed, though she used to be blamed: 'Upon you is the bounty of the triumphant caliphs'.
إذا ما كان مغث أو لحاء
When there is a disturbance or an argument.
ولاحى الرجل ملاحاة ولحاء: شاتمه
And he argued with the man, arguing and quarreling: he insulted him.
من لاحاك فقد عاداك
Whoever argues with you has become your enemy.
ولولا أن ينال أبا طريف ... إسار من مليك، أو لحاء
And if Abu Tarif were not to be captured by a king, or insulted.
وتلاحى الرجلان: تشاتما
And the two men argued: they insulted each other.
ولاحى فلان فلانا ملاحاة ولحاء إذا استقصى عليه
And so-and-so argued with so-and-so, arguing and quarreling, if he investigated him thoroughly.
ولاحت الراعي من درورها ... مخاضها، إلا صفايا خورها
And the shepherd's udder was apparent from her milkings... her milk, except for the best of her weak milk.
واللحاء: اللعن.
And the bark: the curse.
واللحاء: العذل.
And the bark: the blame.
واللواحي: العواذل.
And the blamers: the reproachers.
واللحي: منبت اللحية من الإنسان وغيره، وهما لحيان وثلاثة ألح، على أفعل، إلا أنهم كسروا الحاء لتسلم الياء والكثير لحي ولحي، على فعول، مثل ثدي وظبي ودلي فهو فعول.
And the jaw: the place where the beard grows from a human and others, and they are lihyan and three alhan, on af'al, except that they broke the ha to preserve the ya, and the majority are lihy and lihy, on fa'ul, like thady, thaby, and dily, so it is fa'ul.
والجمع لحى ولحى، بالضم، مثل ذروة وذرى؛ قال سيبويه: والنسب إليه لحوي؛ قال ابن بري: القياس لحيي.
And the plural is liha and liha, with damma, like dharwah and dhara; Sibawayh said: and the attribution to it is lihawi; Ibn Bury said: the measure is lihayyi.
ورجل ألحى ولحياني: طويل اللحية
And a man is alha and lihyani: long-bearded.
والتحى الرجل: صار ذا لحية، وكرهها بعضهم.
And the man grew a beard: he became one with a beard, and some disliked it.
واللحي: الذي ينبت عليه العارض، والجمع ألح ولحي ولحاء؛ قال ابن مقبل: تعرض تصرف أنيابها، ... ويقذفن فوق اللحا التفالا
And the jaw: that on which the sideburn grows, and the plural is alhan, lihy, and liha; Ibn Muqbil said: she exposed the movement of her teeth, ... and they threw the young ones over the jaw.
واللحيان: حائطا الفم، وهما العظمان اللذان فيهما الأسنان من داخل الفم من كل ذي لحي؛ قال ابن سيده: يكون للإنسان والدابة، والنسب إليه لحوي، والجمع الألحي.
And the jawbones: the two walls of the mouth, which are the two bones in which are the teeth from inside the mouth of every animal with a jaw; Ibn Sida said: it can be for humans and animals, and the attribution to it is lihawi, and the plural is alhi.
يقال: رجل لحيان إذا كان طويل اللحية، يجرى في النكرة لأنه يقال للأنثى لحيانة.
It is said: a man is Lihyani if he has a long beard, it is used in the indefinite because the female is called Lihyanah.
وتلحى الرجل: تعمم تحت حلقه؛ هذا تعبير ثعلب، قال ابن سيده: والصواب تعمم تحت لحييه ليصح الاشتقاق.
And the man wrapped his turban: he wrapped it under his throat; this is the expression of Tha'lab, Ibn Sida said: and the correct is he wrapped it under his jawbones for the derivation to be correct.
نهى عن الاقتعاط وأمر بالتلحي ؛ هو جعل بعض العمامة تحت الحنك، والاقتعاط أن لا يجعل تحت حنكه منها شيئا، والتلحي بالعمامة إدارة كور منها تحت الحنك.
He forbade 'iqat and ordered talhi; it is making part of the turban under the chin, and 'iqat is not making anything from it under his chin, and talhi with the turban is wrapping a part of it under the chin.
والتلحي تطويق العمامة تحت الحنك.
And talhi is encircling the turban under the chin.
ولحيا الغدير: جانباه تشبيها باللحيين اللذين هما جانبا الفم؛ قال الراعي: وصبحن للصقرين صوب غمامة، تضمنها لحيا غدير وخانقه
And the sides of the pond: its two sides, by analogy with the two jawbones which are the sides of the mouth; Al-Rai said: And they morninged for the two falcons a downpour of clouds, which the sides of the pond and its narrow part contained.
واللحيان: خدود في الأرض مما خدها السيل، الواحدة لحيانة.
And the jawbones: depressions in the land that the flood has carved, the singular is lahyanah.
واللحيان: الوشل والصديع في الأرض يخر فيه الماء، وبه سميت بنو لحيان، وليست تثنية اللحي.
And the springs: the trickles and fissures in the ground where water flows, and by it Banu Lihyan were named, and it is not a dual of lahy.
ويقال: ألحى الرجل إذا أتى ما يلحى عليه أي يلام، وألحت المرأة؛ قال رؤبة: فابتكرت عاذلة لا تلحي
And it is said: a man is blamed if he does what he is blamed for, meaning he is reproached, and a woman is blamed; Ru'bah said: And a blaming woman came to me, who does not blame.
أن النبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم، احتجم بلحيي جمل ، وفي رواية: بلحي جمل ؛ هو بفتح اللام، وهو مكان بين مكة والمدينة، وقيل: عقبة، وقيل: ماء.
That the Prophet, peace be upon him, was cupped at Lihay Jamal, and in another narration: at Lihy Jamal; it is with fatha on the lam, and it is a place between Mecca and Medina, and it is said: a pass, and it is said: a water source.
وقد سمت لحيا ولحيا ولحيان، وهو أبو بطن.
And they named places Lihyan, Lihyan, and Lihyan, and it is the father of a clan.
وبنو لحيان: حي من هذيل، وهو لحيان بن هذيل بن مدركة.
And Banu Lihyan: a tribe from Hudhayl, and it is Lihyan son of Hudhayl son of Mudarikah.
وبنو لحية: بطن، النسب إليهم لحوي على حد النسب إلى اللحية.
And Banu Lihyah: a clan, the attribution to them is Lihawi, similar to the attribution to the beard.
ولحية التيس: نبتة.
And the goat's beard: a plant.
