القذى: ما يقع في العين وما ترمي به، وجمعه أقذاء وقذي؛
Al-Qadha: what falls into the eye and what it ejects, and its plural is aqdha' and qadha'.
قال أبو نخيلة: مثل القذى يتبع القذيا
Abu Nakhila said: Like the speck, it follows the speck.
وقذيت عينه تقذى قذى وقذيا وقذيانا: وقع فيها القذى أو صار فيها.
And his eye was afflicted (qadhiyat) with qadha', qadhayan, and qadhayanan: the qadha' fell into it or became in it.
وقذى عينه وأقذاها: ألقى فيها القذى،
And he put qadha' into his eye and aqdaha: he threw qadha' into it.
وقال أبو زيد: أقذيتها إذا أخرجت منها القذى، ومنه يقال: عين مقذاة.
And Abu Zayd said: I aqdaitu it if you removed the qadha' from it, and from this it is said: an aqdha'ed eye.
ورجل قذي العين، على فعل، إذا سقطت في عينه قذاة.
And a man with a qadhi eye, on the pattern 'fa'al', if a qadhah fell into his eye.
وقال اللحياني: قذيت عينه أقذيها تقذية أخرجت ما فيها من قذى أو كحل، فلم يقصره على القذى.
And Al-Lihyani said: His eye was afflicted (qadhiyat), and he removed from it (aqdaha) the removal (taqdhiyah) of what was in it of qadha' or kohl, and he did not limit it to qadha'.
الأصمعي: لا يصيبك مني ما يقذي عينك، بفتح الياء،
Al-Asma'i: May nothing from me strike you that irritates (yuqdhi) your eye, with the fath of the ya'.
الليث: قذيت عينه تقذى، فهي قذية مخففة، ويقال قذية مشددة الياء؛
Al-Layth: His eye was afflicted (qadhiyat) with qadha', so it is qadhiyah (light ya), and it is said qadhiyah (stressed ya).
ويقال: قذاة واحدة، وجمعها قذى وأقذاء.
And it is said: one qadhah, and its plural is qadha' and aqdha'.
الأصمعي: قذت عينه تقذي قذيا رمت بالقذى.
Al-Asma'i: His eye expelled (qadhzat) qadha' (taqdhi), it ejected the qadha'.
وعين مقذية: خالطها القذى.
And a muqdhiyah eye: qadha' mixed with it.
اقتذاء الطير: فتحها عيونها وتغميضها كأنها تجلي بذاك قذاها ليكون أبصر لها،
The iqtiddha' of a bird: opening its eyes and closing them as if it is clearing its qadha' with that to be more observant.
يقال: اقتذى الطائر إذا فتح عينه ثم أغمض إغماضة،
It is said: The bird iqtaddha' if it opens its eye then closes it with a blink.
لمعت اقتذاء الطير، والقوم هجع،
It flashed like the iqtiddha' of birds, while the people were asleep.
خفى كاقتذاء الطير وهنا كأنه ... سراج، إذا ما يكشف الليل أظلما
Hidden like the iqtiddha' of birds, and here it is like a lamp, when the night reveals darkness.
والقذى: ما علا الشراب من شيء يسقط فيه،
And qadha': what rises to the top of a drink from something that falls into it.
وقال أبو حنيفة: القذى ما يلجأ إلى نواحي الإناء فيتعلق به، وقد قذى الشراب قذى؛
And Abu Hanifa said: Qadha' is what lodges in the sides of the vessel and clings to it, and the drink became qadhi with qadha'.
ولكن قذاها زائر لا نحبه، ... ترامت به الغيطان من حيث لا ندري
But its qadha' is a visitor we do not like, the lowlands threw it to us from where we do not know.
والقذى: ما هراقت الناقة والشاة من ماء ودم قبل الولد وبعده؛
And qadha': what a she-camel or sheep expels of fluid and blood before and after birth.
وقال اللحياني: هو شيء يخرج من رحمها بعد الولادة، وقد قذت.
And Al-Lihyani said: It is something that comes out of her womb after childbirth, and she has qadhzat.
وحكى اللحياني: أن الشاة تقذي عشرا بعد الولادة ثم تطهر، فاستعمل الطهر للشاة.
And Al-Lihyani narrated: That the sheep expels (tuqdhi) for ten days after childbirth then becomes pure, so he used 'purity' for the sheep.
وقذت الأنثى تقذي إذا أرادت الفحل فألقت من مائها.
And the female animal expels (qadhzat) tuqdhi if she desires the male and expels her fluid.
يقال: كل فحل يمذي، وكل أنثى تقذي.
It is said: Every male animal emits (yamdhi), and every female animal emits (tuqdhi).
ويقال: قذت الشاة فهي تقذي قذيا إذا ألقت بياضا من رحمها، وقيل: إذا ألقت بياضا من رحمها حين تريد الفحل.
And it is said: The sheep qadhzat and she tuqdhi qadhayan if she expels a white substance from her womb, and it was said: if she expels a white substance from her womb when she desires the male.
وقاذيته: جازيته؛
And I qadhaytu him: I retaliated against him.
فسوف أقاذي الناس، إن عشت سالما، مقاذأة حر لا يقر على الذل
I shall surely retaliate against people, if I live safely, with the retaliation of a free person who does not accept humiliation.
والقاذية: أول ما يطرأ عليك من الناس، وقيل: هم القليل، وقد قذت قذيا،
And al-qadhiyah: the first thing that occurs to you from people, and it was said: they are the few, and she has qadhzat qadhayan.
وقيل: قذت قاذية إذا أتى قوم من أهل البادية قد أنجموا «1» وهذا يقال بالذال والدال.
And it was said: she qadhzat a qadhiyah if a group of desert dwellers came who had set their stars (anajamoo). And this is said with the voiced 'dh' and the unvoiced 'd'.
أبو عمرو: أتتنا قاذية من الناس، بالذال المعجمة، وهم القليل، وجمعها قواذ؛
Abu Amr: A qadhiyah (small group) of people came to us, with the voiced 'dh', and they are few, and its plural is qawadh.
قال أبو عبيد: والمحفوظ بالدال.
Abu Ubayd said: And what is preserved is with the unvoiced 'd'.
وقول النبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم، في فتنة ذكرها: هدنة على دخن وجماعة على أقذاء ؛
And the Prophet's saying, peace be upon him, about a sedition he mentioned: A truce based on smoke and a group on aqdha'.
الأقذاء: جمع قذى والقذى جمع قذاة، وهو ما يقع في العين والماء والشراب من تراب أو تبن أو وسخ أو غير ذلك، أراد أن اجتماعهم يكون على فساد من قلوبهم فشبهه بقذى العين والماء والشراب.
Al-aqdha': plural of qadha', and qadha' is plural of qadhah, which is what falls into the eye, water, and drink of dust, straw, dirt, or other things. He meant that their gathering would be based on corruption in their hearts, so he likened it to the qadha' of the eye, water, and drink.
قال أبو عبيد: هذا مثل، يقول اجتماع على فساد في القلوب شبه بأقذاء العين.
Abu Ubayd said: This is a metaphor, meaning a gathering based on corruption in the hearts, likened to the aqdha' of the eye.
ويقال: فلان يغضي على القذى إذا سكت على الذل والضيم وفساد القلب.
And it is said: So-and-so tolerates humiliation (yughdi 'ala al-qadha) if he remains silent in the face of disgrace, oppression, and corruption of the heart.
وفي الحديث: يبصر أحدكم القذى في عين أخيه ويعمى عن الجذع في عينه ؛ ضربه مثلا لمن يرى الصغير من عيوب الناس ويعيرهم به وفيه من العيوب ما نسبته إليه كنسبة الجذع إلى القذاة، والله أعلم.
And in the Hadith: One of you sees the speck (al-qadha) in his brother's eye and is blind to the log in his own eye; he struck this as a metaphor for one who sees the small faults of people and reproaches them for them, while he himself has faults whose proportion to him is like that of a log to a speck, and God knows best.
