Abu Ubayd said: From the neck of the horse is 'al-taqdi', and 'taqdi al-faras' is its using its head for guidance in its gait by lifting its forelegs and tucking its hind legs, resembling a trot.

Ibn Sidah said: And food that is 'qadiyy' and 'qad' is good in taste and smell, this applies to roasted and cooked food, 'qadi' smelled good, 'qadawah', 'qudw', 'qudwah', 'qadah', and 'qadawah'.

وحكى كراع: إني لأجد لهذا الطعام قدا أي طيبا، قال: فلا أدري أطيب طعم عنى أم طيب رائحة.

And Kurā' narrated: 'I find for this food a good smell', he said: 'So I do not know if it means good taste or good smell.'

قال أبو زيد: إذا كان الطبيخ طيب الريح قلت قدي يقدى وذمي يذمى.

Abu Zayd said: If the cooked food has a pleasant smell, you say 'qadi' it smells good, and 'dhamiy' it smells bad.

أبو زيد: يقال: أتتنا قادية من الناس أي جماعة قليلة، وقيل: القادية من الناس أول ما يطرأ عليك، وجمعها قواد.

Abu Zayd said: It is said: 'A 'qadiyah' of people came to us', meaning a small group, and it was said: 'Al-Qadiyah' of people is the first group that arrives upon you, and its plural is 'quwwad'.

وقد قدت، فهي تقدي قديا، وقيل: قدت قادية إذا أتى قوم قد أنجموا «3» من البادية، وقال أبو عمرو: قاذية، بالذال المعجمة، والمحفوظ ما قال أبو زيد.

أبو عمرو: وأقدى إذا قدم من سفر، وأقدى إذا استقام في الخير.

Abu Amr said: And 'aqdaa'' if one returns from a journey, and 'aqdaa'' if one becomes upright in goodness.

وهو مني قدى رمح، بكسر القاف، أي قدره، كأنه مقلوب من قيد.

الأصمعي: بيني وبينه قدى قوس، بكسر القاف.

Al-Asma'i said: Between me and him is the length of a bow, with a kasra on the qaf.
