And I contended with him, I contend with him, with contention and prolonged engagement, if you mean by it 'I argued with him'.
أغرى بينهم العداوة: ألقاها كأنه ألزقها بهم
He incited enmity between them: he cast it, as if he stuck it to them.

وقد أغرى الكلب بالصيد وهو منه لأنه إلزاق
And he trained the dog for hunting, and it is from this root because it is sticking.
لا تحلنا على غراتك، إنا قبل ما قد وشى بنا الأعداء
Do not hold us accountable for your incitement against us, for we were aware before the enemies slandered us.

Al-ghiraa': what is smeared with.
غرى السرج، مقصور مفتوح الأول، فإذا كسرته مددته
Ghiraa' al-sarj, shortened, with the first letter open, and if you break it, you lengthen it.
كأنما جبينه غري
As if his forehead were dyed red.
الليث: الغراء ما غريت به شيئا ما دام لونا واحدا
Al-Layth: Al-ghiraa' is what you dye something with as long as it is one color.
ويقال أيضا: أغريته، ويقال: مطلي مغرى، بالتشديد
And it is also said: I dyed it, and it is said: smeared, with emphasis.
كغري أجسدت رأسه فرع، بين رئاس وحام
Like an idol whose head was smeared with blood, a sacrifice, between the heads and the supporters.
الغري نصب كان يذبح عليه النسك
Al-ghurayy: an altar upon which sacrifices were made.

وتبسم عن مها شبم غري، إذا تعطي المقبل يستزيد
And he smiled from a beautiful gazelle, handsome, when she gives to the approaching one, she increases.
وهما بناءان طويلان، يقال هما قبر مالك وعقيل نديمي جذيمة الأبرش
And they are two tall structures, it is said they are the graves of Malik and Uqayl, companions of Judhaymah al-Abrash.
وسميا الغريين لأن النعمان بن المنذر كان يغريهما بدم من يقتله في يوم بؤسه
And they were named Al-Ghurriyan because Al-Nu'man ibn al-Mundhir used to smear them with the blood of whoever he killed on his day of misery.
أهل عرفت الدار بالغريين؟ لم يبق من آي بها يحلين
O people, do you recognize the dwelling place by Al-Ghurriyan? Nothing remains of its signs to guide you.
وبالغرو والغراء منها منازل، وحول الصفا من أهلها متدور
And in Al-Gharw and Al-Ghirraa' are dwellings from them, and around Al-Safa are its people gathered.
أغرك يا موصول، منها ثمالة وبقل بأكناف الغري تؤان؟
Did Al-Gharw, O Mawsool, deceive you with its abundance and its plants on its sides, growing together?
الغرا: ولد البقرة؛ وفي التهذيب: البقرة الوحشية؛ قال الفراء: ويكتب بالألف، وتثنيته غروان، وجمعه أغراء
Al-ghara: the young of the cow; and in Al-Tahdhib: the wild cow; Al-Farra' said: and it is written with alif, and its dual is gharyan, and its plural is aghraa'.
ويقال للحوار أول ما يولد: غرا أيضا
And the newborn camel is also called ghara when it is first born.
ابن شميل: الغرا منقوص، هو الولد الرطب جدا
Ibn Shumayl: Al-ghara is shortened, it is the very wet offspring.
وكل مولود غرا حتى يشتد لحمه
And every newborn is ghara until its flesh becomes firm.
ولا غرو ولا غروى أي لا عجب
And there is no wonder and no marvel, meaning no astonishment.
لا غرو إلا جارتي وسؤالها: ألا هل لنا أهل سئلت كذلك؟
There is no wonder except my neighbor and her question: Is it possible that I have people, if asked thus?
لا غرو إلا أكلة بهمطة
There is no wonder except a meal with a bite.
وغروت أي عجبت
And I wondered, meaning I was amazed.
ورجل غراء: لا دابة له
And a man gharaa': he has no riding animal.
كأن متونهن متون عد تصفقه الرياح، إذا غرينا
As if their backs were the backs of a riverbank, struck by the winds, when they cooled down.
وغري فلان إذا تمادى في غضبه، وهو من الواو
And so-and-so became stubborn if he persisted in his anger, and it is from the waw.
