هذه كلمة معروفة عند العرب أن يقولوا لأهل الشرف في الدنيا والثروة والغنى أهل عليين
This is a word known among the Arabs, that they say about people of honor in this world, wealth, and riches, 'people of 'Illiyyin'.
والعليون في كلام العرب: الذين ينزلون أعالي البلاد
And 'al-ʿaliyyūn' in the speech of the Arabs refers to those who reside in the high parts of the land.
ذهب الرجل علاء وعلوا ولم يذهب سفلا إذا ارتفع
The man went up high and ascended, and did not go down, if he rose.
وتعلت المرأة: طهرت من نفاسها
And the woman recovered: she became clean from her postnatal bleeding.
وفي حديث سبيعة: أنها لما تعلت من نفاسها أي سلمت
And in the hadith of Sawba'ah: when she recovered from her postnatal bleeding, meaning she was safe.
وتعلى المريض من علته: أفاق منها
And the sick person recovered from his illness: he regained consciousness from it.
فإنه أراد من يعيلي فرده إلى أصله بأن حرك الياء ضرورة
For he intended 'from Ya'ili' and returned it to its origin by moving the 'ya' out of necessity.
وإذا نسب الرجل إلى علي بن أبي طالب، رضي الله عنه، قالوا علوي
And when a man is attributed to Ali ibn Abi Talib, may God be pleased with him, they say 'Alawi'.
وإذا نسبوا إلى بني علي وهم قبيلة من كنانة قالوا هؤلاء العليون
And when they attribute to the Banu Ali, who are a tribe from Kinanah, they say 'These are the Aliyyun'.
وأخذ مالي علوة أي عنوة
And my money was taken by force, meaning by compulsion.
يقال: فلان غير مؤتل في الأمر وغير معتل أي غير مقصر
It is said: So-and-so is not negligent in the matter and not failing, meaning not falling short.
