وتعتت المرأة وتعتى فلان؛ وأنشد: بأمره الأرض فما تعتت أي فما عصت.

And the woman became disobedient and so-and-so did not obey; and he recited: By His command the earth, and it did not disobey, meaning it did not disobey.

والعتا العصيان.

And 'al-'ata' means disobedience.

والعاتي: الجبار، وجمعه عتاة.

And 'al-'ati': the oppressor, and its plural is 'al-'utah'.

كل قد انتهى فقد عتا يعتو عتيا وعتوا، وعسا يعسو عسوا وعسيا، فأحب زكرياء، سلام الله عليه، أن يعلم من أي جهة يكون له ولد، ومثل امرأته لا تلد ومثله لا يولد له، قال الله عز وجل: كذلك، معناه، والله أعلم، الأمر كما قيل لك.

Everyone who has reached their end has become old, he grows old with 'utiyyan and 'utwan, and he becomes old with 'aswan and 'asiyan. So Zechariah, peace be upon him, wished to know from what source he would have a child, given that his wife could not bear children and he himself could not have children. Allah, the Almighty, said: 'Thus,' meaning, and Allah knows best, 'the matter is as you have been told.'

And it is said of an old man when he has passed on and grown old: he grows old with 'utwan, and he becomes old like it with 'aswan.

يقال عتوت يا فلان تعتو عتوا وعتيا وعتيا، والأصل عتو ثم أبدلوا إحدى الضمتين كسرة فانقلبت الواو ياء فقالوا عتيا، ثم أتبعوا الكسرة الكسرة فقالوا عتيا ليؤكدوا البدل.

It is said: 'I was arrogant, O so-and-so, you are arrogant, with arrogance and 'utiyyan and 'utiyyan.' The origin is 'utuww,' then they replaced one of the dammah with a kasrah, so the waw turned into a ya', and they said 'utiyyan,' then they followed the kasrah with another kasrah and said 'utiyyan' to emphasize the substitution.

ورجل عات وقوم عتي، قلبوا الواو ياء؛ قال محمد بن السري: وفعول إذا كانت جمعا فحقها القلب، وإذا كانت مصدرا فحقه التصحيح لأن الجمع أثقل عندهم من الواحد.

And a man is 'aatin' and a people are 'utiyy,' they changed the waw to a ya'. Muhammad ibn Al-Sari said: And 'fuhool' when it is a plural, its change is appropriate, and when it is a masdar, its correction is appropriate because the plural is heavier for them than the singular.

بئس العبد عبد عتا وطغى

What a wretched servant is the servant who is arrogant and transgresses.

العتو: التجبر والتكبر.

Arrogance: haughtiness and pride.

وتعتيت: مثل عتوت، قال: ولا تقل عتيت.

And 'ta'titu': like 'atutu,' he said: And do not say 'atitu'.

وعتى: بمعنى حتى، هذلية وثقفية، وقرأ بعضهم: عتى حين ؛ أي حتى حين.

And 'ata': meaning 'hatta' (until), Hudhaili and Thaqafi. And some read: 'ata heen'; meaning 'hatta heen'.

إن القرآن لم ينزل بلغة هذيل، فأقرئ الناس بلغة قريش ، كل العرب يقولون حتى إلا هذيلا وثقيفا فإنهم يقولون عتى.

The Quran was not revealed in the dialect of Hudhail, so teach the people in the dialect of Quraish. All Arabs say 'hatta' except Hudhail and Thaqif, for they say 'ata'.
