الصدى: شدة العطش، وقيل: هو العطش ما كان
Al-Sada: intense thirst, and it was said: it is thirst, whatever it may be.
صدي يصدى صدى، فهو صد وصاد وصديان، والأنثى صديا
Sadiya yasda sada, so he is sad, saadin, and sadyan, and the female is sadiyatan.
فهن ينبذن من قول يصبن به ... مواقع الماء من ذي الغلة الصادي
They cast from speech they hit with it ... the places of water from the thirsty one.
والجمع صداء.
And the plural is sadaa'.
ورجل مصداء: كثير العطش؛ عن اللحياني.
And a man who is very thirsty: very thirsty; from Al-Lihyani.
وكأس مصداة: كثيرة الماء، وهي ضد المعرقة التي هي القليلة الماء.
And a cup that is water-rich: full of water, and it is the opposite of al-ma'raqa, which is little water.
والصوادي النخل التي لا تشرب الماء؛ قال المرار:
And the thirsty ones are the palm trees that do not drink water; Al-Murar said:
بنات بناتها وبنات أخرى ... صواد ما صدين، وقد روينا صدين أي عطشن.
Daughters of their daughters and daughters of others ... thirsty, they did not drink, and we have narrated 'sadeen' meaning thirsty.
وفي الحديث: لتردن يوم القيامة صوادي أي عطاشا
And in the hadith: You will return on the Day of Resurrection thirsty, meaning very thirsty.
مثل صوادي النخل والسيال واحدتها صادية؛ قال الشاعر:
Like tall palm trees and the syal, the singular of which is sadiyah; the poet said:
صواديا لا تمكن اللصوصا
Thirsty ones, not allowing thieves.
والصدى: جسد الإنسان بعد موته.
And the echo: the body of the human after his death.
والصدى: الدماغ نفسه، وحشو الرأس، يقال: صدع الله صداه.
And the echo: the brain itself, and the filling of the head, it is said: May Allah afflict his brain.
والصدى: طائر يصيح في هامة المقتول إذا لم يثأر به، وقيل: هو طائر يخرج من رأسه إذا بلي، ويدعى الهامة، وإنما كان يزعم ذلك أهل الجاهلية.
And the echo: a bird that cries over the head of the slain if vengeance is not taken for him, and it was said: it is a bird that comes out of his head when it decays, and it is called the 'hama', and the people of ignorance used to claim that.
والصدى: الصوت.
And the echo: the sound.
والصدى: ما يجيبك من صوت الجبل ونحوه بمثل صوتك.
And the echo: what answers you from the sound of the mountain and its like with your sound.
وما كان صلاتهم عند البيت إلا مكاء وتصدية
And their prayer at the House was not but whistling and clapping.
والتصدية: ضربك يدا على يد لتسمع ذلك إنسانا، وهو من قوله مكاء وتصدية.
And the 'tasdiya': your striking hand upon hand to make someone hear that, and it is from his saying 'whistling and tasdiya'.
أحدها ما يبقى من الميت في قبره وهو جثته؛ قال النمر بن تولب:
The first is what remains of the deceased in his grave, which is his corpse; Al-Nimr bin Tawalib said:
أعاذل، إن يصبح صداي بقفرة ... بعيدا نآني ناصري وقريبي
O blamer, if my corpse becomes in a desolate place ... far from me are my helpers and my relatives.
والصدى الثاني حشوة الرأس يقال لها الهامة والصدى
And the second echo is the filling of the head, called the 'hama' and the 'sada'.
والصدى الثالث الصدى الذكر من البوم، وكانت العرب تقول: إذا قتل قتيل فلم يدرك به الثأر خرج من رأسه طائر كالبومة وهي الهامة والذكر الصدى، فيصيح على قبره: اسقوني اسقوني فإن قتل قاتله كف عن صياحه؛
And the third echo is the male echo of the owl, and the Arabs used to say: If a person is killed and vengeance is not taken for him, a bird like an owl, which is the 'hama' and the male 'sada', comes out of his head, and cries over his grave: Give me water, give me water, and if his killer is killed, its crying stops;
والصدى الرابع الصدى ما يرجع عليك من صوت الجبل؛ ومنه قول امرئ القيس:
And the fourth echo is the echo that returns to you from the sound of the mountain; and from it is the saying of Imru' al-Qais:
صم صداها وعفا رسمها، ... واستعجمت عن منطق السائل
Its echo is deafened, and its trace has faded, ... and it became unintelligible to the questioner's speech.
والصدى الخامس قولهم: فلان صدى مال إذا كان رفيقا بسياستها
And the fifth echo is their saying: So-and-so is an echo of wealth if he is a companion in managing it.
ويقال للرجل إذا مات وهلك صم صداه، وفي الدعاء عليه: أصم الله صداه أي أهلكه، وأصله الصوت يرده عليك الجبل إذا صحت أو المكان المرتفع العالي، فإذا مات الرجل فإنه لا يسمع ولا يصوت فيرد عليه الجبل، فكأن معنى قوله صم صداه أي مات حتى لا يسمع صوته ولا يجاب، وهو إذا مات لم يسمع الصدى منه شيئا فيجيبه؛
And it is said of a man when he dies and perishes, 'Samma sadaahu' (his echo is deafened), and in praying against him: May Allah deafen his echo, meaning destroy him. Its origin is the sound that the mountain returns to you when you shout or from a high place. When a man dies, he cannot hear or make a sound to be answered by the mountain. So the meaning of his saying 'Samma sadaahu' is that he died so that his voice is not heard and he is not answered;
قال لأنس أصم الله صداك أي أهلكك
He said to Anas: May Allah deafen your echo, meaning destroy you.
الصدى: الصوت الذي يسمعه المصوت عقيب صياحه راجعا إليه من الجبل والبناء المرتفع، ثم استعير للهلاك لأنه إنما يجاب الحي، فإذا هلك الرجل صم صداه كأنه لا يسمع شيئا فيجيب عنه؛
The echo: The sound that the caller hears immediately after his cry returning to him from the mountain and the high building, then it was metaphorically used for destruction because only the living are answered. When a man perishes, his echo is deafened as if he hears nothing to be answered;
إني إلى كل أيسار ونادبة ... أدعو حبيشا، كما تدعى ابنة الجبل
Indeed, to every ease and lamentation ... I call Habish, as the daughter of the mountain is called.
يقول: يعجل حبيش بجابته كما يعجل الصدى وهو صوت الجبل.
He says: Habish hastens with his answer as the echo, which is the sound of the mountain, hastens.
والصدى: ذكر البوم والهام، والجمع أصداء؛ قال يزيد بن الحكم:
And the echo: the male of the owl and the 'hama', and the plural is 'asdaa'; Yazid bin Al-Hakam said:
بكل يفاع بومها تسمع الصدى ... دعاء، متى ما تسمع الهام تنأج
On every height, its owls are heard, the echo ... a call, whenever you hear the 'hama', it cries out.
والتصدية: التصفيق.
And 'tasdiya': clapping.
وصدى الرجل: صفق بيديه، وهو من محول التضعيف.
And the man 'sadda': he clapped his hands, and it is from the transformation of doubling.
والمصاداة: المعارضة.
And 'musadaah': opposition.
وتصدى للرجل: تعرض له وتضرع، وهو الذي يستشرفه ناظرا إليه.
And he 'tasadda' to the man: he confronted him and pleaded, and he is the one who looks up at him, gazing at him.
فجعل الرجل يتصدى لرسول الله، صلى الله عليه وسلم، ليأمره بقتله ؛ التصدي: التعرض للشيء.
And a man would present himself to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, to order him killed; 'Al-tasaddi': confronting something.
وتصدى للأمر: رفع رأسه إليه.
And he 'tasadda' to the matter: he raised his head to it.
والصدى: فعل المتصدي.
And 'al-sada': the action of the one who confronts.
والصداة: فعل المتصدي، وهو الذي يرفع رأسه وصدره يتصدى للشيء ينظر إليه؛ وأنشد للطرماح:
And 'al-sadaah': the action of the one who confronts, and he is the one who raises his head and chest, confronting the thing, looking at it; and Al-Tirimmāh recited:
لها كلما صاحت صداة وركدة
For it, whenever it cried, a confrontation and a pause.
ص والقرآن ذي الذكر؛ قال الزجاج: من قرأ صاد بالكسر فله وجهان: أحدهما أنه هجاء موقوف فكسر لالتقاء الساكنين، والثاني أنه أمر من المصاداة على معنى صاد القرآن بعملك أي قابله.
Sad, and the Quran, the owner of the reminder; Al-Zajjaj said: Whoever reads 'Saad' with a kasra has two options: one is that it is a stopped letter, so it is kasred due to the meeting of two silent letters, and the second is that it is a command from 'musadaah' with the meaning of 'Saad the Quran with your action', meaning confront it.
يقال: صاديته أي قابلته وعادلته، قال: والقراءة صاد بسكون الدال، وهي أكثر القراءة لأن الصاد من حروف الهجاء وتقدير سكون الوقف عليها، وقيل: معناه الصادق الله، وقيل: معناه القسم، وقيل: ص اسم السورة ولا ينصرف.
It is said: 'Saadaytuhu' meaning I confronted it and matched it. He said: And the reading is 'Saad' with a sukun on the dal, and it is the majority reading because 'Saad' is one of the letters of the alphabet and the estimation of a pause on it. It was said: its meaning is 'Allah is truthful', and it was said: its meaning is an oath, and it was said: 'Sad' is the name of the surah and it is indeclinable.
وصاديت الرجل وداجيته وداريته وساترته بمعنى واحد؛ قال ابن أحمر يصف قدورا:
And 'saadaytu' the man, 'daajaytuhu', 'daaraytuhu', and 'saatartuhu' with one meaning; Ibn Ahmar said, describing pots:
ودهن تصاديها الولائد جلة، ... إذا جهلت أجوافها لم تحلم
And oils that the young women carefully manage, ... when their insides are unknown, they do not become wise.
صاد ذا الظعن إلى غرته، ... وإذا درت لبون فاحتلب
Confront the traveler towards his forehead, ... and if the milk-giving camels give milk, then milk them.
كان والله برا تقيا لا يصادى غربه أي تدارى حدثه وتسكن، والغرب الحدة، وفي رواية: كان يصادى منه غرب ، بحذف النفي، قال: وهو الأشبه لأن أبا بكر، رضي الله عنه، كانت فيه حدة يسيرة؛
By God, he was righteous and pious, he did not suppress his sharpness, meaning he concealed his impetuosity and calmed it. And 'al-gharb' is sharpness. And in another narration: he used to suppress his sharpness, with the negation omitted. He said: And this is more likely because Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, had a slight sharpness;
قال أهل الكوفة هي المداراة، وقال الأصمعي: هي العناية بالشيء، وقال رجل من العرب وقد نتج ناقة له فقال لما مخضت: بت أصاديها طول ليلى، وذلك أنه كره أن يعقلها فيعنتها أو يدعها فتفرق أي تند في الأرض فيأكل الذئب ولدها، فذلك مصاداته إياها، وكذلك الراعي يصادي إبله إذا عطشت قبل تمام ظمئها يمنعها عن القرب؛
The people of Kufa said it is 'al-mudarah' (conciliation), and Al-Asma'i said: it is taking care of something. And an Arab man, when his she-camel gave birth, said when she was being milked: I spent the night carefully managing her, because he disliked tying her up and thus harming her, or leaving her to wander and be preyed upon by wolves, so that was his careful management of her. Likewise, the shepherd 'musadaa' his camels when they are thirsty before their thirst is complete, preventing them from approaching the water;
أيا عز، صادي القلب حتى يودني ... فؤادك، أو ردي علي فؤاديا
O Izz, manage my heart until your heart loves me, ... or return your heart to me.
من المتصديات بغير سوء، ... تسيل، إذا مشت، سيل الحباب
From those who confront without evil, ... they flow, when they walk, like the flow of bubbles.
والأصل فيه الصدد وهو القرب، وأصله يتصدد فقلبت إحدى الدالات ياء.
And the origin of it is 'sadaad' which is closeness, and its origin is 'yatassaddad' so one of the dals was changed to a yaa'.
الصدى هو الجدجد الذي يصر بالليل أيضا، قال: والجندب أصغر من الصدى يكون في البراري؛ قال: والصدى هو هذا الطائر الذي يصر بالليل ويقفز قفزانا ويطير، والناس يرونه الجندب، وإنما هو الصدى.
The 'sada' is the cricket that chirps at night as well. He said: And the grasshopper is smaller than the 'sada' found in the wilderness. He said: And the 'sada' is this creature that chirps at night, jumps, and flies, and people see it as a grasshopper, but it is actually the 'sada'.
وصادى الأمر وصاد الأمر «3». دبره.
And he 'saadaa' the matter and 'saada' the matter. He managed it.
وصاداه: داراه ولاينه.
And 'saadaahu': he conciliated him and softened him.
وصدو الصدو: سم تسقاه النصال مثل دم الأسود.
And 'sadu al-sadu': poison with which spearheads are coated, like the blood of black snakes.
وصداء: حي من اليمن؛ قال:
And Sadaa: a tribe from Yemen; he said:
فقلتم: تعال يا يزي بن محرق، ... فقلت لكم: إني حليف صداء
And you said: Come, O Yazid bin Muhriq, ... And I said to you: Indeed, I am an ally of Sadaa.
والنسب إليه صداوي «4». على غير قياس.
And the attribution to it is 'Sadaawi', not according to analogy.
