وأَشْجَيْتُ فُلاناً عَنِّي: إِمَّا غَرِيمٌ، وَإِمَّا رَجُلٌ سَأَلَكَ فَأَعْطَيْتَهُ شَيْئاً أَرْضَيْتَهُ بِهِ فَذَهَبَ فَقَدْ أَشْجَيْتَهُ
And I satisfied someone from me: either a debtor, or a man who asked you and you gave him something that pleased him, so he left, you have satisfied him.
ويُقالُ لِلْغَرِيمِ: شَجِ عَنِّي يَشْجَى أَي ذَهَبَ
And it is said to the debtor: he departed from me, he departs, meaning he went away.
ورَجُلٌ شَجٌّ أَي حَزِينٌ، وامْرَأَةٌ شَجِيَّةٌ، عَلَى فَعْلَةٍ، ورَجُلٌ شَجٌّ
And a man is shajj, meaning sad, and a woman is shajiyyah, according to the pattern, and a man is shajj.
وَيْلٌ لِلشَّجِيِّ مِنَ الخَلِيِّ
Woe to the sorrowful from the carefree.
نامَ الخَلِيُّونَ عَنْ لَيْلِ الشَّجِيِّينا، ... شَأْنُ السَّلاةِ سِوى شَأْنِ المُحِبِّينا
The carefree slept through the night of the sorrowful, ... the state of the contented is other than the state of the lovers.
فَإِنَّهُ ... نَصَبَ الفُؤادَ لِشَجْوِهِ مَغْمُومُ
For indeed ... his heart is troubled by its sorrow, distressed.
ومَفاوزةٌ شَجْواءُ: صَعْبَةُ المَسْلَكِ مُهِمَّةٌ
And a shajwaa' desert: difficult to traverse and important.
فَتَشاجَتْ عَلَيْهِ، فَقالَ لَها: وَاللَّهِ ما لَكِ مَلْأَةُ الحُسْنِ وَلا عَمُودُهُ وَلا بُرْنُسُهُ فَما هَذا الامْتِناعُ؟ قالَ: مَلَأْتُهُ بَياضَهُ، وَعَمُودُهُ طُولَهُ، وَبُرْنُسُهُ شَعْرَهُ، تَشاجَتْ أَي تَمَنَّعَتْ وَتَحازَنَتْ
So she resisted him, and he said to her: By God, you do not have the fullness of beauty, nor its pillar, nor its hood, so what is this refusal? He said: I filled it with its whiteness, and its pillar with its height, and its hood with its hair. She resisted, meaning she refused and became sorrowful.
قالَ: أَوَّلُ التَّشاجِي؟ قالَ: التَّباهُرُ وَالقَرْطَمَةُ في المَشْيِ
He said: The beginning of tashaji? He said: Boasting and strutting in one's walk.
والشَّجُوجَى: الطَّوِيلُ الظَّهْرِ القَصِيرُ الرَّجُلِ
And al-shajooja: tall of back, short of leg.
وفَرَسٌ شَجُوجَى ضَخْمٌ
And a shajooja horse, large.
ورِيحٌ شَجُوجَى وشَجُوجاةٌ: دائِمَةُ الهُبُوبِ
And a shajooja and shajoojaah wind: continuously blowing.
والشَّجُوجَى: العَقْعَقُ، والأُنْثَى شَجُوجاةٌ
And al-shajooja: the magpie, and the female is shajoojaah.
أَنَّ رِفْقَةً ماتَتْ بِالشَّجِيِّ
