إن الموصين بنو سهوان؛ قال زر بن أوفى الفقيمي يصف إبلا: لم يثنها عن همها قيدان، ... ولا الموصون من الرعيان، إن الموصين بنو سهوان أي أن الذين يوصون بنو من يسهو عن الحاجة فأنت لا توصى لأنك لا تسهو، وذلك إذا وصيت ثقة عند الحاجة.
Indeed, the ones who give advice are the descendants of Sahwan; Zirr ibn Awfa al-Faqimi said, describing camels: 'Neither hobbles deterred them from their purpose... nor the advised ones among the shepherds. Indeed, the advised ones are the descendants of Sahwan,' meaning that those who give advice are descendants of those who are heedless of need, so you are not advised because you are not heedless, and that is when you advise someone trustworthy in need.
والسهو في الصلاة: الغفلة عن شيء منها، سها الرجل في صلاته.
And heedlessness in prayer: being negligent of something within it; a man was heedless in his prayer.
وفي الحديث: أن النبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم، سها في الصلاة ؛ قال ابن الأثير: السهو في الشيء تركه عن غير علم، والسهو عنه تركه مع العلم، ومنه قوله تعالى: الذين هم عن صلاتهم ساهون.
And in the Hadith: that the Prophet, peace be upon him, was heedless in prayer; Ibn al-Athir said: 'Heedlessness in something is leaving it without knowledge, and being heedless of it is leaving it with knowledge,' and from this is His saying, the Almighty: 'Those who are heedless of their prayer.'
أبو عمرو: ساهاه غافله، وهاساه إذا سخر منه.
Abu Amr said: 'Saahaahu' means to be heedless of him, and 'haasaahu' means to mock him.
ومشي سهو: لين.
And a 'mashy sah' (walking) is gentleness.
والسهوة من الإبل: اللينة السير الوطيئة؛ قال زهير: تهون بعد الأرض عني فريدة، ... كناز البضيع، سهوة المشي، بازل وهي اللينة السير لا تتعب راكبها كأنها تساهيه، وعدى الشاعر تهون بعني لأن فيه معنى تخفف وتسكن.
And the 'sahwah' among camels: is one of gentle and easy gait; Zuhayr said: 'She seems distant from the earth to me, a unique one... with a full flank, of gentle gait, a mature she-camel,' meaning she has a gentle gait that does not tire her rider as if she were making him feel at ease, and the poet used 'tahoonu' (seems distant) because it carries the meaning of lightness and calmness.
وجمل سهو بين السهاوة: وطيء.
And a 'jamal sah' (camel) between 'al-sahawah' (gentleness): is one of easy gait.
ويقال: بعير ساه راه، وجمال سواه رواه لواه؛ ومنه الحديث: آتيك به غدا سهوا رهوا أي لينا ساكنا.
And it is said: 'ba'eer saah raah' (a camel), and 'jimaal suwaah ruwaah lawaah' (camels); and from this is the Hadith: 'I will come to you with it tomorrow, sahwan rahwan,' meaning gently and calmly.
وفي الحديث: وإن عمل أهل النار سهلة بسهوة ؛ السهوة الأرض اللينة التربة، شبه المعصية في سهولتها على مرتكبها بالأرض السهلة التي لا حزونة فيها، وقيل: كل لين سهو، والأنثى سهوة.
And in the Hadith: 'And the deeds of the people of the Fire are easy with softness'; 'al-sahwah' is soft ground, likening sin in its ease for its perpetrator to easy ground that has no roughness, and it is said: 'Everything gentle is sahwan,' and the feminine is 'sahwah'.
والسهو: السكون واللين، والجمع سهاء مثل دلو ودلاء؛ قال الشاعر: تناوحت الرياح لفقد عمرو، ... وكانت قبل مهلكه سهاءا أي ساكنة لينة.
And 'al-sahw': is stillness and gentleness, and its plural is 'suhaa' like 'dalw' and 'dalaa'; the poet said: 'The winds wailed for the loss of Amr... and before his demise, they were suhaa,' meaning still and gentle.
الأزهري: والأساهي والأساهيج ضروب مختلفة من سير الإبل، وبغلة سهوة السير، وكذلك الناقة، ولا يقال للبغل سهو.
Al-Azhari said: 'Al-asaahi and al-asaahij are different types of camel gaits, and a mule with a 'sahwat al-sayr' (gentle gait), and likewise a she-camel, but 'sahw' is not said of a mule.'
وروي عن سلمان أنه قال: يوشك أن يكثر أهلها، يعني الكوفة، فتملأ ما بين النهرين حتى يغدو الرجل على البغلة السهوة فلا يدرك أقصاها ؛ السهوة: اللينة السير لا تتعب راكبها.
And it is narrated from Salman that he said: 'It is almost time that its inhabitants increase, meaning Kufa, and fill the space between the two rivers until a man goes out on a mule with a gentle gait and cannot reach its farthest point'; 'al-sahwah' is one with a gentle gait that does not tire its rider.
ويقال: افعل ذلك سهوا رهوا أي عفوا بلا تقاض.
And it is said: 'Do that sahwan rahwan,' meaning freely, without demanding.
والسهو: السهل من الناس والأمور والحوائج.
And 'al-sahw': is the easygoing person, matter, or need.
ومــاء ســهــو: ســهــل، يعــنــي ســهــلا فــي الــحــلــق.
And 'maa' sahwan' (water): is easy, meaning easy on the throat.
وقوس سهوة: مواتية؛ قال ذو الرمة: قليل نصاب المال إلا سهامه، ... وإلا زجوما سهوة في الأصابع
And a 'qaws sahwah' (bow): is pliable; Dhu al-Rummah said: 'Little is the amount of wealth except its arrows... and except for a pliable 'zajoom' in the fingers.'
التهذيب: المعرس الذي عمل له عرس، وهو الحائط يجعل بين حائطي البيت لا يبلغ به أقصاه، ثم يجعل الجائز من طرف العرس الداخل إلى أقصى البيت، ويسقف البيت كله، فما كان بين الحائطين فهو السهوة، وما كان تحت الجائز فهو المخدع؛ قال ابن سيده: السهوة حائط صغير يبنى بين حائطي البيت ويجعل السقف على الجميع، فما كان وسط البيت فهو سهوة، وما كان داخله فهو المخدع؛
Al-Tahdhib: 'Al-mu'arras' is what is made for it, and it is the wall made between the two walls of the house not reaching its end, then the beam is made from the edge of the 'urs' inwards to the farthest part of the house, and the entire house is roofed. What is between the two walls is 'al-sahwah', and what is under the beam is 'al-makhda''. Ibn Saydah said: 'Al-sahwah' is a small wall built between the two walls of the house, and the roof is made over all of it. What is in the middle of the house is 'sahwah', and what is inside it is 'al-makhda''.
وقيل: هي صفة بين بيتين أو مخدع بين بيتين تستتر بها سقاة الإبل من الحر، وقيل: هي كالصفة بين يدي البيت، وقيل: هي شبيه بالرف والطاق يوضع فيه الشيء، وقيل: هي بيت صغير منحدر في الأرض سمكه مرتفع في السماء شبيه بالخزانة الصغيرة يكون فيها المتاع، وذكر أبو عبيد أنه سمعه من غير واحد من أهل اليمن، وقيل: هي أربعة أعواد أو ثلاثة يعارض بعضها على بعض، ثم يوضع عليه شيء من الأمتعة.
And it is said: it is a partition between two houses or a closet between two houses, by which camel drivers shelter from the heat. And it is said: it is like a 'suffah' in front of the house. And it is said: it is similar to a shelf or niche where something is placed. And it is said: it is a small house dug into the ground, its height rising into the sky, like a small closet where belongings are kept. Abu Ubayd mentioned that he heard this from more than one person from the people of Yemen. And it is said: it is four or three sticks crossed over each other, upon which something of belongings is placed.
والسهوة: الكندوج. والسهوة: الروشن. والسهوة: الكوة بين الدارين.
And 'al-sahwah': is the 'kinduj' (storage bin). And 'al-sahwah': is the 'rawshan' (balcony). And 'al-sahwah': is the 'kuwah' (opening) between the two dwellings.
ابن الأعرابي: السهوة الجحلة أو مثل الحجلة.
Ibn al-A'rabi said: 'Al-sahwah' is the 'jahlah' (small tent) or like a bird's nest.
والسهوة: بيت على الماء يستظلون به تنصبه الأعراب.
And 'al-sahwah': is a structure by the water for shade, erected by the Bedouins.
أبو ليلى: السهوة سترة تكون قدام فناء البيت، ربما أحاطت بالبيت شبه سور حول البيت. وفي الحديث: أنه دخل على عائشة وفي البيت سهوة عليها ستر ، هو من ذلك، وقيل: هو شبيه بالرف أو الطاق يوضع فيه الشيء.
Abu Layla said: 'Al-sahwah' is a curtain in front of the courtyard of the house, sometimes surrounding the house like a wall around the house. And in the Hadith: 'He entered upon Aisha, and in the house was a 'sahwah' with a curtain on it,' it is from this meaning. And it is said: it is similar to a shelf or niche where something is placed.
والسهوة: الصخرة، طائية، لا يسمون بذلك غير الصخرة، وخصصه في التهذيب فقال: الصخرة التي يقوم عليها الساقي، وجمع ذلك كله سهاء.
And 'al-sahwah': is the rock, a Tayyi usage, they do not call anything else by this name except a rock. And it was specified in Al-Tahdhib as: the rock upon which the water carrier stands. And the plural of all of this is 'suhaa'.
والمساهاة: حسن المخالقة والعشرة؛ قال العجاج: حلو المساهاة وإن عادى أمر وحلو المساهاة أي المياسرة والمساهلة.
And 'al-musaahaah': is good disposition and companionship; Al-A'raj said: 'Sweet is the 'musaahaah' even if he is an enemy, and sweet is the 'musaahaah',' meaning leniency and ease.
والمساهاة في العشرة: ترك الاستقصاء.
And 'al-musaahaah' in companionship: is refraining from excessive scrutiny.
والسهواء: ساعة من الليل وصدر منه.
And 'al-sahwaa': is an hour of the night, and its beginning.
وحملت المرأة سهوا إذا حبلت على حيض.
And a woman conceived 'sahwan' if she became pregnant during her menstruation.
وعليه من المال ما لا يسهى وما لا ينهى أي ما لا تبلغ غايته، وقيل: معناه أي لا يعد كثرة، وقيل: معنى لا يسهى لا يحزر، وذهبت تميم فما تسهى ولا تنهى أي لا تذكر.
And he has from wealth what cannot be estimated and cannot be forbidden, meaning what its limit cannot be reached. And it is said: its meaning is that it is not counted as numerous. And it is said: the meaning of 'la yushaa' is 'la yuhzar' (cannot be estimated). And Tamim went, and they were neither remembered nor forbidden, meaning they were not mentioned.
والسها: كويكب صغير خفي الضوء في بنات نعش الكبرى، والناس يمتحنون به أبصارهم، يقال: إنه الذي يسمى أسلم مع الكوكب الأوسط من بنات نعش؛ وفي المثل: أريها السها وتريني القمر وأرطاة بن سهية: من فرسانهم وشعرائهم.
And 'al-suhaa': is a small, faint star in Ursa Major, and people test their eyesight with it. It is said: it is the one called 'Aslam' along with the middle star of Ursa Major. And in the proverb: 'She shows me the Suhaa and shows me the moon.' And 'Artaah ibn Suhiah': was among their knights and poets.
قال ابن سيده: ولا نحمله على الياء لعدم س ه ي.
Ibn Saydah said: 'And we do not attribute it to the 'yaa' due to the absence of 's-h-y'.
والأساهي: الألوان، لا واحد لها؛ قال ذو الرمة: إذا القوم قالوا: لا عرامة عندها، ... فساروا لقوا منها أساهي عرما
And 'al-asaahi': are colors, it has no singular. Dhu al-Rummah said: 'When the people said: 'There is no trouble with her,'... they set out and found from her various colors.'
