الزَّبِيَة: الرابية التي لا يعلوها الماء
The mound: the elevated ground which water does not rise above.
وفي المثل: قد بلغ السيل الزبى
And in the proverb: The flood has reached the mound (meaning the situation has become critical).
كتب عثمان إلى علي، رضي الله عنه لما حوصر: أما بعد فقد بلغ السيل الزبى وجاوز الحزام الطبيين، فإذا أتاك كتابي هذا فأقبل إلي
Uthman wrote to Ali, may God be pleased with him, when he was besieged: To proceed, the flood has reached the mound and surpassed the two belts; so when this letter of mine reaches you, come to me.
والزبى: جمع زبية وهي الرابية لا يعلوها الماء
And al-zubā: is the plural of zabiya, which is the mound that water does not rise above.
وقيل: إنما أراد الحفرة التي تحفر للأسد ولا تحفر إلا في مكان عال من الأرض لئلا يبلغها السيل فتنطم
And it was said: it means the pit dug for a lion, and it is only dug in a high place on the ground so that the flood does not reach it and collapse it.
والزبية: حفرة يتزبى فيها الرجل للصيد وتحتفر للذئب فيصطاد فيها
And the zabiya: is a pit in which a man conceals himself for hunting, and it is dug for a wolf so that it is hunted in it.
ابن سيده: الزبية حفرة يستتر فيها الصائد
Ibn Sidah said: The zabiya is a pit in which the hunter conceals himself.
والزبية: حفيرة يشتوى فيها ويختبز، وزبى اللحم وغيره: طرحه فيها
And the zabiya: is a small pit in which one roasts and bakes, and he drove/placed meat and other things in it.
طار جرادي بعد ما زبيته، ... لو كان رأسي حجرا رميته
My locusts flew away after I drove them, ... if my head were a stone, I would throw it.
والزبية: بئر أو حفرة تحفر للأسد، وقد زباها وتزباها
And the zabiya: is a well or a pit dug for a lion, and he dug it and dug it for himself.
كاللذ تزبى زبية فاصطيدا
Like one who concealed himself in a pit and was hunted.
تزبى بذي الأرطى لها، ووراءها ... رجال فبدت نبلهم وكليب
He concealed himself among the arta trees for it, and behind him were men, so their arrows and spears appeared.
سميت زبية الأسد زبية لارتفاعها عن المسيل
The lion's pit is called zabiya because of its elevation from the watercourse.
يا طيء السهل والأجبال موعدكم ... كمبتغى الصيد أعلى زبية الأسد
O Tayy of the plain and the mountains, your meeting place is like one seeking game at the top of the lion's pit.
والزبية أيضا: حفرة النمل، والنمل لا تفعل ذلك إلا في موضع مرتفع
And the zabiya also: is the ant's pit, and ants do not do this except in an elevated place.
وفي الحديث: أنه نهى عن مزابي القبور
And in the hadith: that he prohibited the places of mourning for graves.
هي ما يندب به الميت ويناح عليه به، من قولهم: ما زباهم إلى هذا أي ما دعاهم
It is what is used to mourn the deceased and wail over him, from their saying: What drove them to this? meaning what called them.
كره أن يشق القبر ضريحا كالزبية ولا يلحد
He disliked that the grave be split open like a zabiya and not be a niche (lahd).
على حافرها الدية: للأول ربعها، وللثاني ثلاثة أرباعها، وللثالث نصفها، وللرابع جميع الدية
The bloodwit is on its digger: a quarter for the first, three-quarters for the second, half for the third, and the full bloodwit for the fourth.
الزبية: حفيرة تحفر للأسد والصيد ويغطى رأسها بما يسترها ليقع فيها
The zabiya: is a pit dug for a lion and hunting, and its opening is covered with something to conceal it so that one falls into it.
والزابيان: نهران بناحية الفرات
And the Zabiyan: are two rivers in the region of the Euphrates.
وَالأَزَبِّي: السُرْعَةُ وَالنَّشَاطُ فِي السَّيْرِ، عَلَى أَفْعُولٍ
And al-azabbi: is speed and vigor in gait, on the pattern of af'ūl.
حَتَّى أَتَى أَزَبِّيَهَا بِالأَدَبِ
Until he reached its vigorous pace with discipline.
وَالأَزَابِي: ضُرُوبٌ مُخْتَلِفَةٌ مِنْ السَّيْرِ، وَاحِدُهَا أَزْبِيٌّ
And al-azābi: are different types of gait, the singular of which is azabbi.
وَلَهُ أَزَابِي مِنْكَرَةٌ
And he has astonishing gaits.
كَأَنَّ أَزَبِّيَهَا، إِذَا رَدَمَتْ، ... هَزَمَ بُغَاةٍ فِي إِثْرِ مَا فَقَدُوا
It is as if its sound, when it rumbled, was like defeated rebels in pursuit of what they lost.
وَزَبَى الشَّيْءَ: سَاقَهُ
And he drove the thing: he propelled it.
فَإِنَّهَا بَعْضُ مَا تَزْبِي لَكَ الرَّقَمُ
For it is part of what the numbers drive for you.
فَقُلْتُ لَهُ كَلِمَةً أَزْبِيهِ بِهَا أَيْ أُزْعِجُهُ وَأُقْلِقُهُ
So I said to him a word to drive him with it, meaning to disturb and agitate him.
أَمْ أَنْتَ وَمَا تَزْبِي لِلدَّاهِيَةِ إِذَا عَظُمَتْ وَتَفَاقَمَتْ
Or you and what it drives, for a calamity when it is great and overwhelming.
وَزَبَّيْتُ الشَّيْءَ أَزْبِيهِ زَبْيًا: حَمَلْتُهُ
And I carried the thing, I carried it, a carrying: I transported it.
وَازْدَبَاهُ: كَزَبَاهُ
And he carried it: like he carried it.
تَزَابَى عَنْهُ: تَكَبَّرَ
He turned away from it: he became arrogant.
تَزَابِيهِ تَرْفَعِي عَنْهُ تَكَبُّرًا أَيْ تَتَكَبَّرِينَ عَنْهُ
You turn away from him with pride, meaning you are too proud to deal with him.
إِذَا تَزَابَى مَشْيَةً أَزَائِبَا
When he walked with a gait that was slow and extended.
وَقِيلَ: لَقِيتُ مِنْهُ الأَزَابِيَّ
And it was said: I encountered great evils/hardships from him.
أَيْ سَنَةً
Meaning a year (of drought/famine).
