إنما ابتدأ بالمعافاة من العقوبة لأنها من صفات الأفعال كالإماتة والإحياء والرضا؛ والسخط من صفات القلب، وصفات الأفعال أدنى رتبة من صفات الذات، فبدأ بالأدنى مترقيا إلى الأعلى
He began with forgiveness from punishment because it is one of the attributes of actions, like causing death and giving life, and contentment. Displeasure is an attribute of the heart, and attributes of actions are of a lower rank than attributes of the essence, so he began with the lower, ascending to the higher.
وإنما ذكرها لأن دلالة الأولى عليها دلالة تضمن، فأراد أن يدل عليها دلالة مطابقة فكنى عنها أولا ثم صرح بها ثانيا، ولأن الراضي قد يعاقب للمصلحة أو لاستيفاء حق الغير.
He mentioned it because the indication of the first [attribute] upon it is an indication of inclusion, so he wanted to indicate it by explicit correspondence, so he alluded to it first and then stated it explicitly second, and because the content one may be punished for a greater good or to satisfy the right of another.
وتثنية الرضا رضوان ورضيان، الأولى على الأصل والأخرى على المعاقبة، وكأن هذا إنما ثني على إرادة الجنس.
And the dual of 'riḍā' is 'riḍwān' and 'riḍyān', the first according to the original form and the second according to metathesis, and it is as if this was dualized with the intention of generality.
وقد رضي يرضى رضا ورضا ورضوانا ورضوانا، الأخيرة عن سيبويه ونظره بشكران ورجحان، ومرضاة، فهو راض من قوم رضاة، ورضي من قوم أرضياء ورضاة؛
And he was pleased, he is pleased, with 'riḍā', 'riḍā', 'riḍwānan', and 'riḍwānan', the last according to Sibawayh and his analogy with 'shukrān' and 'raḥjān', and 'mardaah'. So he is a content one from a people of contentment, and he is pleased from a people of the pleased and contentment.
إذا رضيت علي بنو قشير ... لعمر الله أعجبني رضاها
If the Banu Qushayr are pleased with me... By Allah, their satisfaction pleases me.
عداه بعلى لأنه إذا رضيت عنه أحبته وأقبلت عليه، فذلك استعمل على بمعنى عن.
He made it transitive with 'ala' because when [someone] is pleased with him, they love him and turn to him, so 'ala' was used in the sense of 'an'.
رضي الله عنهم ورضوا عنه*
Allah is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him*
تأويله أن الله تعالى رضي عنهم أفعالهم ورضوا عنه ما جازاهم به.
Its interpretation is that Allah, the Almighty, was pleased with their deeds, and they were pleased with what He rewarded them with.
أرضاه: أعطاه ما يرضى به.
'Ardaahu': to give him what he is pleased with.
وترضاه طلب رضاه؛
And 'taradaahu' means seeking his satisfaction;
إذا العجوز غضبت فطلق، ... ولا ترضاها ولا تملق
If the old woman gets angry, then divorce her... And do not seek her satisfaction, nor flatter her.
والرضي: المرضي.
And 'al-raḍiyy': the pleasing one.
ورضيت الشيء وارتضيته، فهو مرضي، وقد قالوا مرضو، فجاؤوا به على الأصل.
And I accepted the thing and I chose it, so it is accepted (passive participle), and they have said 'marḍū', bringing it according to the original form.
ورجل رضى من قوم رضى: قنعان مرضي، وصفوا بالمصدر؛
And a content man from a people of contentment: satisfied, accepted; they described with the masdar;
الرضوان الرضا، وكذلك الرضوان، بالضم، والمرضاة مثله.
'Al-riḍwān' is contentment, and likewise 'al-riḍwān' (with damma), and 'al-marḍāh' is similar.

ويقال: هو مرضي، ومنهم من يقول مرضو لأن الرضا في الأصل من بنات الواو، وقيل في عيشة راضية* أي مرضية أي ذات رضى كقولهم هم ناصب.
And it is said: 'he is accepted', and some say 'marḍū' because 'al-riḍā' originally belongs to the 'wāw' family. And it is said about 'a righteous life' (ʿaysha rāḍiya)* meaning accepted, i.e., possessing contentment, like their saying 'they are hardworking'.
ويقال: رضيت معيشته، على ما لم يسم فاعله، ولا يقال رضيت.
And it is said: 'his livelihood was made pleasing' (ruḍiya maʿīshatuhu), using the passive voice, and one does not say 'raḍiya' (active voice).
ويقال: رضيت به صاحبا، وربما قالوا رضيت عليه في معنى رضيت به وعنه.
And it is said: 'I was pleased with him as a companion', and sometimes they say 'raḍītu ʿalayhi' in the meaning of 'raḍītu bihi' and 'ʿanhu'.
وأرضيته عني ورضيته، بالتشديد أيضا، فرضي.
And I satisfied him on my behalf and I pleased him, also with tashdid, so he was pleased.
وترضيته أي أرضيته بعد جهد.
And 'tarḍīyatuhu' means I satisfied him after effort.
واسترضيته فأرضاني.
And I sought his satisfaction, and he satisfied me.
وراضاني مراضاة ورضاء فرضوته أرضوه، بالضم، إذا غلبته فيه لأنه من الواو، وفي المحكم: فرضوته كنت أشد رضا منه، ولا يمد الرضا إلا على ذلك.
And he negotiated with me for 'murāḍāh' and 'riḍā', and I overpowered him in it, meaning I was more pleased than him because it is from 'wāw'. And in 'Al-Muḥkam': 'farḍawtuhu' means I was more pleased than him, and 'al-riḍā' is only lengthened on that basis.
وإنما قالوا رضيت عنه رضا، وإن كان من الواو، كما قالوا شبع شبعا، وقالوا رضي لمكان الكسر وحقه رضو، قال أبو منصور: إذا جعلت الرضى بمعنى المراضاة فهو ممدود، وإذا جعلته مصدر رضي يرضى رضى فهو مقصور.
And they said 'raḍītu ʿanhu riḍā', even though it is from 'wāw', as they said 'shabiʿa shabʿan'. And they said 'riḍī' because of the kasra, while its rightful form is 'riḍwā'. Abu Manṣūr said: If you make 'al-riḍā' mean 'murāḍāh', it is lengthened (maddūd), and if you make it the masdar of 'raḍiya yaraḍā', it is short (maqṣūr).
وقالوا عيشة راضية على النسب أي ذات رضا.
And they said 'ʿaysha rāḍiya' (a righteous life) by way of attribution, meaning possessing contentment.
ورضوى: جبل بالمدينة، والنسبة إليه رضوي
And 'Radwa': a mountain in Medina, and the attribution to it is 'Radwī'.
ورضوى اسم جبل بعينه، وبه سميت المرأة، قال: ولا أحمله على باب تقوى لأنه ليس في الكلام ر ض ي فيكون هذا محمولا عليه.
And 'Radwa' is the name of a specific mountain, and a woman is named after it. He said: And I do not consider it under the pattern of 'taqwā' because 'r-ḍ-y' is not present in the word, so this would be carried over to it.
ورضوى اسم امرأة؛
And 'Radwa' is the name of a woman;
عفا واسط من آل رضوى فنبتل، ... فمجتمع المجرين، فالصبر أجمل
Wāsiṭ has become desolate from the family of Radwa, then Nabtal... Then the meeting of the two streams, so patience is more beautiful.
ومن أسماء النساء رضيا بوزن الثريا، وتكبيرهما رضوى وثروى.
And among women's names is 'Raḍiyya' on the pattern of 'thariyya', and their augmentatives are 'Radwa' and 'Tharwa'.
