الدم من الأخلاط: معروف.
Blood is one of the humors: it is known.
وتشرق من تهمالها العين بالدم
And the eye shines with blood from its constant flow,
فالعين دائمة السجم
And the eye is constantly shedding tears,
وتزعم العرب أن الرجلين المتعاديين إذا ذبحا لم تختلط دماؤهما.
The Arabs claim that if two enemies are slaughtered, their bloods do not mix.
والدمة أخص من الدم كما قالوا بياض وبياضة؛
And 'dammah' is more specific than 'damm' as they say 'bayad' (whiteness) and 'bayadah' (a patch of whiteness);
قال ابن سيده: القطعة من الدم دمة واحدة.
Ibn Sidah said: A piece of blood is one 'dammah'.
قال: وحكى ابن جني دم ودمة مع كوكب وكوكبة فأشعر أنهما لغتان.
He said: Ibn Jinni narrated 'dam' and 'dammah' alongside 'kawkab' and 'kawkabah', implying they are two variants.
أصله دمي، قال: ودليل ذلك قوله دميت يده؛
Its origin is 'dami', he said: and the proof of that is his saying 'his hand bled';
قال: ومثله يد أصلها يدي؛
He said: And like it is 'yad' (hand), its origin is 'yadi';
قال: ولو كان مثل قفا وعصا لم يجمع على ذلك.
He said: And if it were like 'qafa' (back) and 'asa' (staff), it would not be collected in that way.
الدم لامه ياء بدليل قول الشاعر:
The last letter of 'damm' is 'ya', as evidenced by the poet's saying:
والذاهب منه الياء، والدليل عليها قولهم في تثنيته دميان،
And what is missing from it is the 'ya', and the evidence for it is their saying in its dual 'damyan',
ألا ترى أن الشاعر لما اضطر أخرجه على أصله فقال:
Do you not see that the poet, when compelled, brought it out according to its origin, saying:
فلسنا على الأعقاب تدمى كلومنا، ولكن على أعقابنا يقطر الدما
We are not on our heels bleeding our wounds, but on our heels the blood drips
قال: ولا يلزم على هذا قولهم يديان، وإن اتفقوا على أن تقدير يد فعل ساكنة العين، لأنه إنما ثني على لغة من يقول لليد يدا، قال: وهذا القول أصح.
He said: And it does not follow from this their saying 'yadiyan', even if they agree that the measure of 'yad' is 'fa'al' with a sakin 'ayn', because it is only dualised according to the dialect of one who says 'yadan' for 'yad', he said: And this opinion is more correct.
قال: ومثله قول جرير: عوى ما عوى من غير شيء رميته ... بقارعة أنفاذها تقطر الدما
He said: And like it is the saying of Jarir: Whatever howled, I did not throw anything at it... its openings drip blood.
ويوردها للطعن، حتى يعلها ... حياض المنايا تقطر الموت والدما
And he leads them to the thrust, until he makes them drink... from the pools of death, dripping death and blood.
وتصغير الدم دمي، والنسبة إليه دمي، وإن شئت دموي.
And the diminutive of 'damm' is 'dumi', and the attribution to it is 'dami', and if you wish 'damawi'.
ويقال: دمي الشيء يدمى دمى ودميا فهو دم، مثل فرق يفرق فرقا فهو فرق، والمصدر متفق عليه أنه بالتحريك وإنما اختلفوا في الاسم.
And it is said: A thing 'damia' (bled) 'yadma' 'daman' and 'damayan', so it is 'dam' (bloody), like 'faraqa' (he separated) 'yafriq' (he separates) 'faraqan' (separation), so it is 'fariq' (separator), and the مصدر (verbal noun) is agreed to be with harakah, and they only differed about the noun.
وإنما قالوا دمي يدمى لحال الكسرة التي قبل الواو كما قالوا رضي يرضى وهو من الرضوان.
And they only said 'dami yadam' because of the kasrah before the 'waw', just as they said 'radiya yarda' (he was pleased, he is pleased) and it is from 'ridwan' (pleasure).
فلا تكوني، يا ابنة الأشم، ... ورقاء دمى ذئبها المدمي
So do not be, O daughter of Al-Ashamm, ... a grey dove whose wolf has made it bleed.
وفي المثل: ولدك من دمى عقبيك.
And in the proverb: Your child is from the blood of your heels.
يعني أن الدم لا تشربه الأرض ولا يغوص فيها فجعل امتناعها منه بغضا مجازا.
Meaning that the earth does not drink blood nor does it sink into it, so her refusal of it was made a metaphor for hatred.
والدامية من الشجاج: التي دميت ولم يسل بعد منها دم، والدامعة هي التي يسيل منها الدم.
And 'ad-damiya' from wounds: is that which has bled but blood has not yet flowed from it, and 'ad-dami'ah' is that from which blood flows.
استدمى الرجل: طأطأ رأسه يقطر منه الدم.
The man 'istadma': he lowered his head, dripping blood from it.
والمستدمي الذي يستخرج من غريمه دينه بالرفق.
And the 'mustadmi' is one who extracts his debt from his debtor with gentleness.
إذا ذبحت العقيقة أخذت منها صوفة واستقبلت بها أوداجها، ثم توضع على يافوخ الصبي ليسيل على رأسه مثل الخيط، ثم يغسل رأسه بعد ويحلق ؛
When the 'aqiqah is slaughtered, take a piece of wool from it and place it against its jugular veins, then place it on the fontanelle of the child so that it flows like a thread onto his head, then wash his head afterwards and shave it;
وجاء بتفسيره عن قتادة وهو منسوخ، وكان من فعل الجاهلية، وقال: ويسمى أصح.
And its explanation came from Qatadah, and it is abrogated, and it was from the practice of the pre-Islamic era, and he said: And 'tasmiyah' (naming) is more correct.
إذا كان أمرهم بإماطة الأذى اليابس عن رأس الصبي فكيف يأمرهم بتدمية رأسه والدم نجس نجاسة غليظة؟
If they were ordered to remove dry harm from the child's head, how would they be ordered to make his head bleed, and blood is impure with a severe impurity?
فقال إني وجدتها تدمى أي أنها ترى الدم، وذلك لأن الأرنب تحيض كما تحيض المرأة.
So he said, 'I found it bleeding,' meaning it sees blood, and that is because the rabbit menstruates like a woman.
والمدمى: الثوب الأحمر.
And 'al-mudamma': the red garment.
من الخيل الشديد الحمرة شبه لون الدم.
Among horses, intensely red, resembling the color of blood.
وكميتا مدماة كأن متونها ... جرى فوقها، واستشعرت لون مذهب
And two intensely red she-camels whose humps were as if... blood ran over them, and they sensed a golden color.
يقول: تضرب حمرتها إلى الكلفة ليست بشديدة الحمرة.
He says: Its redness tends towards a reddish-brown, not intensely red.
والأشقر المدمى: الذي لون أعلى شعرته يعلوها صفرة كلون الكميت الأصفر.
And the reddish-brown blond: is one whose hair color at the top is overlaid with yellowness like the yellow of a reddish-brown horse.
والمدمى من السهام: الذي ترمي به عدوك ثم يرميك به؛
And 'al-mudamma' from arrows: is that which you shoot at your enemy and then the enemy shoots it back at you;
رميت يوم أحد رجلا بسهم فقتلته ثم رميت بذلك السهم أعرفه حتى فعلت ذلك وفعلوه ثلاث مرات، فقلت: هذا سهم مبارك مدمى فجعلته في كنانتي، فكان عنده حتى مات ؛
On the day of Uhud, I shot a man with an arrow and killed him, then I shot that arrow, recognizing it, until I did that and they did it three times, so I said: This is a blessed, blood-stained arrow, and I put it in my quiver, and it remained with him until he died;
المدمى من السهام: الذي أصابه الدم فحصل في لونه سواد وحمرة مما رمي به العدو؛
'Al-mudamma' from arrows: is that which blood has struck, resulting in blackness and redness in its color from being shot at the enemy;
قال: ويطلق على ما تكرر به الرمي، والرماة يتبركون به؛
He said: And it is applied to that which is repeatedly shot, and archers seek blessings from it;
قال شمر: المدمى الذي يرمي به الرجل العدو ثم يرميه العدو بذلك السهم بعينه: قال: كأنه دمي بالدم حين وقع بالمرمي.
Shamr said: 'Al-mudamma' is that with which a man shoots the enemy, and then the enemy shoots that same arrow back: he said: as if it bled with blood when it struck the target.
والمدمى: السهم الذي عليه حمرة الدم وقد جسد به حتى يضرب إلى السواد.
And 'al-mudamma': the arrow that has the redness of blood on it and has been imbued with it until it turns black.
ويقال: سمي مدمى لأنه احمر من الدم.
And it is said: It is named 'mudamma' because it became red from blood.
إن بيننا وبين القوم حبالا ونحن قاطعوها، ونخشى إن الله أعزك وأظهرك أن ترجع إلى قومك، فتبسم النبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم، وقال: بل الدم الدم والهدم الهدم، أحارب من حاربتم وأسالم من سالمتم
There are ties between us and the people, and we will cut them. And we fear that if Allah grants you victory and prominence, you will return to your people. So the Prophet, peace be upon him, smiled and said: Rather, blood for blood and destruction for destruction; I will fight whom you fight and be at peace with whom you are at peace.
العرب تقول دمي دمك وهدمي هدمك في النصرة أي إن ظلمت فقد ظلمت؛
The Arabs say 'dami damak' and 'hadami hadamak' in support, meaning 'if you are wronged, then I am wronged';
فإن الجحيم هي المأوى؛ أي أن الجحيم مأواه؛
Then Hell is the refuge; meaning Hell is his refuge;
وكذلك قوله: فإن الجنة هي المأوى؛ المعنى فإن الجنة مأواه،
And likewise his saying: Then Paradise is the refuge; the meaning is that Paradise is his refuge,
فعلى قول الفراء قوله الدم الدم أي دمكم دمي وهدمكم هدمي وأنتم تطلبون بدمي وأطلب بدمكم ودمي ودمكم شيء واحد،
So according to Al-Farra's saying, his statement 'ad-damm ad-damm' means 'your blood is my blood and your destruction is my destruction', and you seek retribution for my blood and I seek retribution for your blood, and my blood and your blood are one thing,
إن تقتل تقتل ذا دم أي من هو مطالب بدم أو صاحب دم مطلوب،
If you kill, you kill one who owes blood, meaning one who is sought for blood or is the owner of a sought-after blood,
ويروى: ذا ذم ، بالذال المعجمة، أي ذمام وحرمة في قومه، وإذا عقد ذمة وفي له.
And it is narrated: 'dha dhim', with the dotted 'dhal', meaning honor and sanctity among his people, and if he makes a covenant, he is loyal to it.
إني لأسمع صوتا كأنه صوت دم أي صوت طالب دم يستشفي بقتله.
I hear a sound as if it were the sound of blood, meaning the sound of one seeking blood who desires retribution through his killing.
والدم ما هو بشاعر ، يعني النبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم؛
And 'ad-dam ma huwa bi-sha'ir', meaning the Prophet, peace be upon him;
هذه يمين كانوا يحلفون بها في الجاهلية يعني دم ما يذبح على النصب.
This was an oath they used to swear in the pre-Islamic era, meaning the blood of what is slaughtered on the altars.
ومننه الحديث: لا والدماء أي دماء الذبائح، ويروى: لا والدمى ، جمع دمية وهي الصورة ويريد بها الأصنام.
And from it is the hadith: 'No, by the bloods', meaning the blood of sacrifices, and it is narrated: 'No, by the 'adama', the plural of 'dumyah' which is an image, and it refers to idols.
كأن عنقه عنق دمية ؛
As if his neck were the neck of a doll;
الدمية: الصنم، وقيل: الصورة المنقشة العاج ونحوه، وقال كراع: هي الصورة فعم بها.
'Ad-dumyah': the idol, and it is said: an engraved image of ivory and the like, and Kara' said: it is an image, making it general.
