الدد اللهو واللعب.
Al-dad is amusement and play.
ما أنا من دد ولا الدد مني
I am not from amusement, nor is amusement from me.
هذا دد، وددا مثل قفا، وددن
This is 'dad', and 'dada' like 'qafa', and 'dadn'.
كأن حدوج المالكية، غدوة، ... خلايا سفين بالنواصف من دد
As if the litters of the Malikiyyah, in the morning, ... were like the cells of ships in the wide parts of Dad.
والحدوج: جمع حدج وهي مراكب النساء، والمالكية: منسوبة إلى مالك بن سعد بن ضبيعة، والسفين: جمع سفينة، والنواصف: جمع ناصفة الرحبة الواسعة تكون في الوادي
And al-huduj: plural of hadaj, which are the mounts of women, and al-Malikiyyah: attributed to Malik bin Sa'd bin Dhubay'ah, and al-sufun: plural of safinah, and al-nawāsif: plural of nāsifah, the wide expanse that is in the valley.
الدد اللهو واللعب، وهي محذوفة اللام، وقد استعملت متممة ددى كندى وعصا، ودد مثل دم، وددن كبدن
Al-dad is amusement and play, and it is a lam-deficient word, and it has been used completed as 'dada' like 'nada' and 'asa', and 'dud' like 'dam', and 'dadn' like 'badn'.
فلا يخلو المحذوف أن يكون ياء كقولهم يد في يدي، أو نونا كقولهم لد في لدن
So the omitted letter must be either a ya' as in their saying 'yad' for 'yadi', or a nun as in their saying 'lad' for 'ladan'.
ومعنى تنكير الدد في الأول الشياع والاستغراق وأن لا يبقى شيء منه إلا وهو منزه عنه أي ما أنا في شيء من اللهو واللعب
And the meaning of the indefinite 'al-dad' in the first instance is generality and encompassment, meaning nothing remains of it except that it is free from it, i.e., I am not involved in any amusement or play.
وتعريفه في الجملة الثانية لأنه صار معهودا بالذكر كأنه قال ولا ذلك النوع
And its definiteness in the second clause is because it has become known by mention, as if he said, nor that type.
وإنما لم يقل ولا هو مني لأن الصريح آكد وأبلغ
And he did not say 'nor is it from me' because the explicit is more emphatic and eloquent.
يقال هذا دد ودا وديد وديدان وددن وديدبون للهو
It is said: this is 'dad', 'dada', 'did', 'didan', 'dadn', and 'didbun' for amusement.
ما أنا من ددا ولا الددا منيه، ما أنا من الباطل ولا الباطل مني.
I am not from falsehood, nor is falsehood from me.
دد حكاية الاستنان للطرب وضرب الأصابع في ذلك، وإن لم تضرب بعد الجري في بطالة فهو دد
Dad is the imitation of humming for joy and the tapping of fingers in that, and if you do not tap after running in idleness, it is dad.
واستطرقت ظعنهم لما احزأل بهم ... آل الضحى ناشطا من داعبات دد
And I followed their camels when they were distressed... in the late morning, eagerly, from those who play with dad.
من داعب ددد؛ قال: لما جعله نعتا للداعب كسعه بدال ثالثة لأن النعت لا يتمكن حتى يتم ثلاثة أحرف فما فوق ذلك، فصار ددد نعتا للداعب اللاعب
From 'da'ab daddad'; he said: when he made it an adjective for the player, he added a third 'dal' because an adjective is not established until it has three letters or more, so 'daddad' became an adjective for the playing, amusing person.
فإذا أرادوا اشتقاق الفعل منه لم ينفك لكثرة الدالات، فيفصلون بين حرفي الصدر بهمزة فيقولون دأدد يدأدد دأددة، وإنما اختاروا الهمزة لأنها أقوى الحروف
And when they wanted to derive the verb from it, it could not be separated due to the abundance of 'dals', so they separated the two root letters with a hamza, saying 'da'addada' 'yuda'addidu' 'da'addadah', and they chose the hamza because it is the strongest of the letters.
الدادي المولع باللهو الذي لا يكاد يبرحه.
Al-dadi is the one engrossed in amusement who can hardly leave it.
