Then the flood swept through the plain, meaning it threw and cast.

Al-Adḥī is a station between Al-Na'ā'im and Sa'd Al-Dhābiḥ, called Al-Baldah.

وسئل ابن المسيب عن الدحو بالحجارة فقال: لا بأس به، أي المراماة بها والمسابقة.

And Ibn Al-Musayyib was asked about al-dahw with stones, and he said: there is no harm in it, meaning throwing them at each other and racing.

يقال هو يدحو بالحجر بيده أي يرمي به ويدفعه،

I used to play with Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn, may God be pleased with them, with al-madāḥī (game stones);

هي أحجار أمثال القرصة، كانوا يحفرون حفرة ويدحون فيها بتلك الأحجار، فإن وقع الحجر فيها غلب صاحبها، وإن لم يقع غلب.

They are stones like flat cakes; they used to dig a hole and throw those stones into it. If the stone fell into it, its owner won, and if it did not fall, he lost.

والمدحاة: خشبة يدحى بها الصبي فتمر على وجه الأرض لا تأتي على شيء إلا اجتحفته.

And the madḥāh: a stick with which a child throws, passing over the face of the earth, not passing over anything without destroying it.

هي المداحي والمسادي، وهي أحجار أمثال القرصة وقد حفروا حفرة بقدر ذلك الحجر فيتنحون قليلا، ثم يدحون بتلك الأحجار إلى تلك الحفرة، فإن وقع فيها الحجر فقد قمر، وإلا فقد قمر،

They are al-madāḥī and al-masādī, and they are stones like flat cakes, and they have dug a hole the size of that stone and stand a little away, then they throw those stones towards that hole. If the stone falls into it, he has won, otherwise he has lost,

وهو يدحو ويسدو إذا دحاها على الأرض إلى الحفرة،

And he throws and strides when he throws it on the ground towards the hole,

والحفرة هي أدحية، وهي افعولة من دحوت.

And the hole is adḥiyah, and it is 'af'ūlah from 'daḥawtu'.

And the horse strode, striding, a striding: it threw with its legs, a throwing without lifting its hoof much from the ground.

تدحت الإبل إذا تفحصت في مباركها السهلة حتى تدع فيها قراميص أمثال الجفار، وإنما تفعل ذلك إذا سمنت.

والدحو: استرسال البطن إلى أسفل وعظمه؛ عن كراع.

And Al-Dahw: the sagging of the belly downwards and its bone; according to Kra'a.

And the origin of this word is 'sayyid' in Persian.

دحية، بالكسر، هو دحية بن خليفة الكلبي الذي كان جبريل، عليه السلام، يأتي في صورته وكان من أجمل الناس وأحسنهم صورة.

Dahiya, with a kasra, is Dahiya ibn Khalifah Al-Kalbi, in whose form Gabriel, peace be upon him, used to come, and he was among the most beautiful and best-looking of people.

وكان جبريل، عليه السلام، يأتيه في صورة دحية.

And Gabriel, peace be upon him, used to come to him in the form of Dahiya.

والدحية: رئيس الجند ومقدمهم، وكأنه من دحاه يدحوه إذا بسطه ومهده لأن الرئيس له البسط والتمهيد،

And Al-Dahiyah: the chief of the soldiers and their leader, and it is as if it is from 'dahaahu' (he spread it out) if he spread it out and prepared it, because the leader has the spreading and preparation,

وقلب الواو فيه ياء نظير قلبها في فتية وصبية، وأنكر الأصمعي فيه الكسر.

And the inversion of the waw into ya is analogous to its inversion in 'fityah' and 'ṣibyah', and Al-Asma'i denied the kasra in it.

يدخل البيت المعمور كل يوم سبعون ألف دحية مع كل دحية سبعون ألف ملك ؛

Seventy thousand dāḥiyah enter the inhabited House every day, with each dāḥiyah seventy thousand angels;
