وخبت النار والحرب والحدة تخبو خبوا وخبوا: سكنت وطفئت وخمد لهبها، وهي خابية، وأخبيتها أنا: أخمدتها؛

وقوله تعالى: كلما خبت زدناهم سعيرا ؛ قيل: معناه سكن لهبها، وقيل: معناه كلما تمنوا أن تخبو وأرادوا أن تخبو.
And His saying, the Almighty: 'Whenever it subsides, We increase them in blazing fire'; it was said: its meaning is its flame calmed down, and it was said: its meaning is whenever they wished it would subside and wanted it to subside.
والخابية: الحب، وأصله الهمز، لأنه من خبأت إلا أن العرب تركت همزها.
