لا يحتمل الضيم، وأنف حمي من ذلك.
He does not tolerate oppression, and a proud person is indignant about that.
يقال حميت في الغضب حميا.
It is said: 'I became intensely angry in my anger.'
وحمي النهار، بالكسر، وحمي التنور حميا فيهما أي اشتد حره.
The day became intensely hot, and the oven became intensely hot, meaning their heat intensified.
الآن حمي الوطيس ؛ التنور وهو كناية عن شدة الأمر واضطرام الحرب؛
Now the battle has intensified; the oven, which is a metaphor for the severity of the matter and the raging of war;
وقدر القوم حامية تفور أي حارة تغلي، يريد عزة جانبهم وشدة شوكتهم.
And the pot of the people was intensely hot and boiling, meaning their pride and the intensity of their might.
وحمي الفرس حمى: سخن وعرق يحمى حميا، وحمي الشد مثله؛
And the horse became hot, it sweated intensely, and the intense exertion was similar;
فهي تردي، وإذا ما فزعت ... طار من أحمائها شد الأزر
She causes destruction, and when she is frightened... the intense exertion of her strength flies from her.
وحمي المسمار وغيره في النار حميا وحموا: سخن،
And the nail and others became intensely hot in the fire, meaning they became hot,
وأحميت الحديدة فأنا أحميها إحماء حتى حميت تحمى.
And I heated the iron intensely, and I heat it intensely until it becomes intensely hot.
ابن السكيت: أحميت المسمار إحماء فأنا أحميه.
Ibn Al-Sikkit: I heated the nail intensely, and I heat it.
وأحمى الحديدة وغيرها في النار: أسخنها، ولا يقال حميتها.
And I made the iron and other things hot in the fire: I made them hot, and it is not said 'I heated them'.
الحمة: السم؛ عن اللحياني،
The 'hammah': poison; according to Al-Lihyani,
وقال بعضهم: هي الإبرة التي تضرب بها الحية والعقرب والزنبور ونحو ذلك أو تلدغ بها، وأصله حمو أو حمي، والهاء عوض، والجمع حمات وحمى.
And some of them said: it is the stinger with which a snake, scorpion, wasp, and the like strike or are stung, and its origin is 'hamw' or 'hamy', and the 'ha' is a substitute, and the plural is 'hamat' and 'hama'.
وإنما الحمة سم كل شيء يلدغ أو يلسع.
Whereas the 'hammah' is the venom of everything that stings or bites.
يقال لسم العقرب الحمة والحمة.
The venom of the scorpion is called 'al-hammah' and 'al-hammah'.
حمة العقرب سمها وضرها، وحمة البرد شدته.
The 'hammah' of a scorpion is its venom and harm, and the 'hammah' of cold is its intensity.
الحميا: شدة الغضب وأوله.
The 'humya': the intensity of anger and its beginning.
ويقال: مضى فلان في حميته أي في حملته.
It is said: So-and-so proceeded in his fervor, meaning in his charge.
ويقال: سارت فيه حميا الكأس أي سورتها، ومعنى سارت ارتفعت إلى رأسه.
It is said: The fervor of the wine rose in him, meaning its intensity, and 'sarat' means it rose to his head.
الحميا بلوغ الخمر من شاربها.
The 'humya' is the effect of wine reaching its drinker.
الحميا دبيب الشراب.
The 'humya' is the creeping effect of the drink.
وحميا الكأس سورتها وشدتها، وقيل: أول سورتها وشدتها، وقيل: إسكارها وحدتها وأخذها بالرأس.
And the 'humya' of the wine is its intensity and strength, and it is said: its initial intensity and strength, and it is said: its intoxication and sharpness and its effect on the head.
وحموة الألم: سورته.
And the 'humuwah' of pain: its intensity.
وحميا كل شيء: شدته وحدته.
And the 'humya' of everything: its intensity and sharpness.
وفعل ذلك في حميا شبابه أي في سورته ونشاطه؛
And he did that in the fervor of his youth, meaning in its intensity and vigor;
أشكو إليكم حموة الألم
I complain to you of the intensity of the pain
أنه رخص في الرقية من الحمة ، وفي رواية: من كل ذي حمة.
That he permitted incantations for the sting, and in another narration: for every creature with a stinger.
وتنزع حمة كل دابة أي سمها؛
And the venom of every creature will be removed, meaning its poison;
ويقال: إنه لشديد الحميا أي شديد النفس والغضب.
And it is said: He is intensely angry, meaning intense in spirit and anger.
إنه لحامي الحميا أي يحمي حوزته وما وليه؛
He is a protector of his domain, meaning he protects his territory and what is under his charge;
والحامية: الحجارة التي تطوى بها البئر.
And the 'hamiyah': the stones with which the well is lined.
الحوامي عظام الحجارة وثقالها، والواحدة حامية.
The 'hawami' are large and heavy stones; the singular is 'hamiyah'.
الحوامي: صخر عظام تجعل في مآخير الطي أن ينقلع قدما، يحفرون له نقارا فيغمزونه فيه فلا يدع ترابا ولا يدنو من الطي فيدفعه.
The 'hawami': large rocks placed at the rear of a trench to prevent collapse, they dig a hollow for it and push it in, so it does not leave dirt nor approach the trench, so it pushes it away.
الحوامي ما يحميه من الصخر، واحدتها حامية؛
The 'hawami' are what is protected by rock, its singular is 'hamiyah';
حجارة الركية كلها حوام، وكلها على حذاء واحد، ليس بعضها بأعظم من بعض، والأثافي الحوامي أيضا، واحدتها حامية؛
All the stones of the well are 'hawam', and all are of the same size, none is larger than the other, and the hearthstones are also 'hawami', its singular is 'hamiyah';
كأن دلوي، تقلبان ... بين حوامي الطي، أرنبان
As if my two buckets, being turned... between the sides of the trench, like two hares
والحوامي: ميامن الحافر ومياسره.
And the 'hawami': the right and left sides of the hoof.
والحاميتان: ما عن اليمين والشمال من ذلك.
And the two 'hamiyatan': what is to the right and left of that.
في الحوافر الحوامي، وهي حروفها من عن يمين وشمال؛
In the hooves are the 'hawami', which are their edges from the right and left;
الحاميتان ما عن يمين السنبك وشماله.
The two 'hamiyatan' are what is to the right and left of the hoof-tip.
والحامي: الفحل من الإبل يضرب الضراب المعدود قيل عشرة أبطن، فإذا بلغ ذلك قالوا هذا حام أي حمى ظهره فيترك فلا ينتفع منه بشيء ولا يمنع من ماء ولا مرعى.
And the 'hami': the stud camel that mates a counted number of times, said to be ten times, and when it reaches that, they say this is a 'hami', meaning its back is protected, so it is left and not used for anything, nor is it prevented from water or pasture.
الحامي من الإبل الذي طال مكثه عندهم.
The 'hami' from the camels is one whose stay with them has been long.
ما جعل الله من بحيرة ولا سائبة ولا وصيلة ولا حام ؛
Allah has not ordained Bahirah, nor Sa'ibah, nor Wasilah, nor Hami;
إذا لقح ولد ولده فقد حمى ظهره ولا يجز له وبر ولا يمنع من مرعى.
If the offspring of his offspring mates, then his back is protected, and his wool is not to be shorn, nor is he prevented from pasture.
واحمومى الشيء: اسود كالليل والسحاب؛
And a thing became intensely dark: it became black like the night and clouds;
تألق واحمومى وخيم بالربى ... أحم الذرى ذو هيدب متراكب
It flashed and became intensely dark, and settled on the hills... dark-topped with piled-up strands
احمومى من الشيء فهو محموم، يوصف به الأسود من نحو الليل والسحاب.
Intensely dark from something, so it is 'mahmum', it is used to describe the blackness of night and clouds.
والمحمومي من السحاب: المتراكم الأسود.
And the 'mahmumi' from the clouds: the piled-up black ones.
عشية جاوزنا حماة وشيزرا «2».

ومرهق سال إمتاعا بوصدته ... لم يستعن، وحوامي الموت تغشاه
And a weary one who flowed with enjoyment in his enclosure... was not helped, and the terrors of death enveloped him
