الحصى: صغار الحجارة، الواحدة منه حصاة.
Al-ḥaṣā: small stones, the singular of which is ḥaṣāh.
مصحصحة تنفي الحصى عن طريقها، ... يطير أحشاء الرعيب انثرارها
Vigorously flowing, it sweeps stones from its path, ... scattering its contents, it would disembowel the fearful.
وحصيته بالحصى أحصيه أي رميته.
And I pelted him with stones, I count them, meaning I threw them.
وحصيته ضربته بالحصى.
And I pelted him, meaning I struck him with stones.
وهو ما كان مثل بعر الغنم.
And it is that which is like the droppings of sheep.
تقول حصاة وحصي وحصي مثل قناة وقني وقني ونواة ونوي ودواة ودوي
One says ḥaṣāh, ḥaṣī, and ḥuṣayy like qanāh, qunī, qunī, nawāh, naway, dawāh, and daway.
نهى عن بيع الحصاة
He prohibited the sale of the pebble.
هو أن يقول المشتري أو البائع إذا نبذت الحصاة إليك فقد وجب البيع
It is when the buyer or seller says, 'If I throw this pebble to you, the sale is binding.'
والكل فاسد لأنه من بيوع الجاهلية، وكلها غرر لما فيها من الجهالة.
And all of it is invalid because it is from the sales of ignorance, and all of it involves uncertainty due to the ambiguity within it.
الحصاة: داء يقع بالمثانة وهو أن يخثر البول فيشتد حتى يصير كالحصاة
Al-ḥaṣāh: a disease that occurs in the bladder, which is when urine coagulates and hardens until it becomes like a stone.
وقد حصي الرجل فهو محصي.
And the man has developed a stone, so he is afflicted with it.
الحصى: العدد الكثير، تشبيها بالحصى من الحجارة في الكثرة
Al-ḥaṣā: a large number, likened to small stones from the stones in their abundance.
ولست بالأكثر منهم حصى، ... وإنما العزة للكاثر
And you are not the most numerous among them in terms of stones (i.e., count), ... and indeed, glory belongs to the most numerous.
نحن أكثر منهم حصى أي عددا.
We are more numerous than them in terms of stones, meaning in number.
الحصو: المنع؛ قال بشير الفريري: ألا تخاف الله إذ حصوتني ... حقي بلا ذنب، وإذ عنيتني؟
Al-ḥaṣw: prevention; Bashir al-Fariri said: Do you not fear God when you prevented me from ... my right without fault, and when you troubled me?
الحصاة: العقل والرزانة.
Al-ḥaṣāh: intellect and soundness of mind.
يقال: هو ثابت الحصاة إذا كان عاقلا.
It is said: He is firm in his intellect if he is rational.
وإن لسان المرء، ما لم يكن له ... حصاة، على عوراته، لدليل
And indeed, a person's tongue, if it does not have ... intellect, is a guide to his flaws.
وما له حصاة ولا أصاة أي رأي يرجع إليه.
And he has no intellect or sound judgment to refer to.
وهي فعلة من أحصيت.
And it is a pattern from 'aḥṣaytu' (I counted).
وفلان حصي وحصيف ومستحص إذا كان شديد العقل.
And so-and-so is ḥaṣī, ḥaṣīf, and mustaḥiṣṣ if he is strong in intellect.
وهو من الإحصاء لا من حصى الحجارة.
And it is from counting (al-iḥṣā') and not from the stones (ḥaṣā).
حصاة اللسان: ذرابته.
Ḥaṣāt al-lisān: its restraint.
وهل يكب الناس على مناخرهم في جهنم إلا حصا ألسنتهم؟
And what will cast people onto their faces in Hell but the restraint of their tongues?
وأما الحصاة فهو العقل نفسه.
As for al-ḥaṣāh, it is intellect itself.
حصا ألسنتهم جمع حصاة اللسان وهي ذرابته.
Ḥaṣā al-sinatihim is the plural of ḥaṣāt al-lisān, which is its restraint.
حصاة المسك قطعة صلبة توجد في فأرة المسك.
A piece of musk is a solid piece found in the musk pod.
المحصي؛ هو الذي أحصى كل شيء بعلمه فلا يفوته دقيق منها ولا جليل.
Al-Muḥṣī; He is the one who has counted everything with His knowledge, so nothing, small or great, escapes Him.
وأحصى كل شيء عددا
And He has counted everything in number.
أي أحاط علمه سبحانه باستيفاء عدد كل شيء.
Meaning His knowledge, glorified be He, encompasses the full count of everything.
وحاشكة يحصي الشمال نذيرها
And a herd whose leader counts its north.
علم أن لن تحصوه فتاب عليكم
He knew that you would not be able to count it, so He turned to you in forgiveness.
علم أن لن تحفظوا مواقيت الليل
He knew that you would not be able to preserve the timings of the night.
علم أن لن تحصوه أي لن تطيقوه.
He knew that you would not be able to count it, meaning you would not be able to bear it.
من أحصاها دخل الجنة
Whoever counts them enters Paradise.
فمعناه عندي، والله أعلم، من أحصاها علما وإيمانا بها ويقينا بأنها صفات الله عز وجل، ولم يرد الإحصاء الذي هو العد.
And its meaning, in my opinion, and God knows best, is whoever comprehends them with knowledge, faith, and certainty that they are attributes of God Almighty, and not the counting which is enumeration.
الحصاة العد اسم من الإحصاء
Al-ḥaṣāh al-ʿadd is a noun from al-iḥṣāʾ (counting).
يبلغ الجهد ذا الحصاة من القوم، ... ومن يلف واهنا فهو مود
Effort reaches the one who counts the people, ... and whoever finds him weak, he is a friend.
قيل من أحصاها من حفظها عن ظهر قلبه
It is said: from whoever memorizes them by heart.
وقيل: من استخرجها من كتاب الله تعالى وأحاديث رسوله، صلى الله عليه وسلم، لأن النبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم، لم يعدها لهم إلا ما جاء في رواية عن أبي هريرة وتكلموا فيها
And it is said: from whoever extracts them from the Book of God Almighty and the hadiths of His Messenger, peace be upon him, because the Prophet, peace be upon him, did not enumerate them for them except what came in a narration from Abu Hurayrah, and they discussed it.
وقيل: أراد من أطاق العمل بمقتضاها مثل من يعلم أنه سميع بصير فيكف سمعه ولسانه عما لا يجوز له، وكذلك في باقي الأسماء، وقيل: أراد من أخطر بباله عند ذكرها معناها وتفكر في مدلولها معظما لمسماها، ومقدسا معتبرا بمعانيها ومتدبرا راغبا فيها وراهبا
And it is said: he meant whoever is able to act according to their implications, like one who knows that He is All-Hearing and All-Seeing, so he restrains his hearing and tongue from what is not permissible for him, and similarly for the rest of the names. And it is said: he meant whoever brings to mind their meaning when they are mentioned and reflects on their implications, glorifying the named, sanctifying and considering their meanings, contemplating, desiring, and fearing.
لا أحصي ثناء عليك أي لا أحصي نعمك والثناء بها عليك ولا أبلغ الواجب منه.
I cannot count the praise due to You, meaning I cannot count Your blessings and the praise for them, nor can I fulfill the obligatory amount of it.
أكل القرآن أحصيت أي حفظت.
I have counted all the Quran, meaning I have memorized it.
أحصيها أي احفظيها.
Count her, meaning preserve her.
استقيموا ولن تحصوا واعلموا أن خير أعمالكم الصلاة
Be upright, and you will not be able to count (i.e., achieve perfect uprightness), and know that the best of your deeds is prayer.
استقيموا في كل شيء حتى لا تميلوا ولن تطيقوا الاستقامة من قوله تعالى: علم أن لن تحصوه ؛ أي لن تطيقوا عده وضبطه.
Be upright in everything so that you do not deviate, and you will not be able to bear uprightness, from the Almighty's saying: 'He knew that you would not be able to count it'; meaning you would not be able to bear its counting and control.
