Ibn Shumayl said: The ḥāzī has less knowledge than the ṭāriq, and the ṭāriq is almost a sorcerer, while the ḥāzī speaks based on conjecture and fear.

وقال الليث: الحازي الكاهن، حزا يحزو ويحزي ويتحزى؛

And Al-Layth said: The ḥāzī is the sorcerer; he practiced divination, foretelling, and estimating;

ومن تحزى عاطسا أوطرقا

And whoever foretells from a sneeze or a knock.

وقال: وحازية ملبونة ومنجس، ... وطارقة في طرقها لم تسدد

And he said: And a diviner, afflicted and defiled... and a night-comer in her path who was not guided.

وقال ابن سيده في موضع آخر: حزا حزوا وتحزى تكهن،

And Ibn Sīdah said elsewhere: He practiced divination and foretelling;

وحزا الطير حزوا: زجرها،

And he drove away the birds by measuring them (interpreting their calls);

وحزى النخل حزيا: خرصه.

And he estimated the dates by measuring them.

حزيت الشيء أحزيه إذا خرصته وحزوت، لغتان من الحازي، ومنه حزيت الطير إنما هو الخرص.

I estimated the thing, I estimate it, if I measured it and estimated it; these are two linguistic variants related to the ḥāzī, and from this, 'ḥazaytu al-ṭayr' means only estimation (of their calls).

ويقال لخارص النخل حاز، وللذي ينظر في النجوم حزاء، لأنه ينظر في النجوم وأحكامها بظنه وتقديره فربما أصاب.

The one who estimates dates is called a ḥāz, and the one who looks at the stars is called a ḥazzā', because he looks at the stars and their judgments with his conjecture and estimation, and sometimes he is correct.

أبو زيد: حزونا الطير نحزوها حزوا زجرناها زجرا.

Abu Zayd said: We drove away the birds, we drove them away with ḥazw, meaning we repelled them with zajar.

وهو عندهم أن ينغق الغراب مستقبل رجل وهو يريد حاجة فيقول هو خير فيخرج، أو ينغق مستدبره فيقول هذا شر فلا يخرج، وإن سنح له شيء عن يمينه تيمن به، أو سنح عن يساره تشاءم به، فهو الحزو والزجر.

And it is with them that if a raven caws facing a man who wants something, they say it is good and he goes out, or if it caws behind him, they say it is bad and he does not go out. If something appears to his right, he takes it as a good omen; if it appears to his left, he takes it as a bad omen; this is the ḥazw and the zajar.

وفي حديث هرقل: كان حزاء ؛ الحزاء والحازي: الذي يحزر الأشياء ويقدرها بظنه.

And in the hadith of Heraclius: He was a ḥazzā'; the ḥazzā' and the ḥāzī are those who estimate and measure things with their conjecture.

يقال: حزوت الشيء أحزوه وأحزيه.

It is said: I estimated the thing, I estimate it, and I estimate it.

وفي الحديث: كان لفرعون حاز أي كاهن.

And in the hadith: Pharaoh had a ḥāz, meaning a sorcerer.

وحزاه السراب يحزيه حزيا: رفعه؛

And the mirage lifted it, it lifts it with ḥazw: it raised it;

فلما حزاهن السراب بعينه ... على البيد، أذرى عبرة وتتبعا

And when the mirage lifted them in his sight... upon the desert, he shed a tear and followed.

وحزا السراب الشخص يحزوه ويحزيه إذا رفعه؛

And the mirage lifted the person, it lifts him and it lifts him if it raised him;

والحزا والحزاء جميعا: نبت يشبه الكرفس، وهو من أحرار البقول، ولريحه خمطة، تزعم الأعراب أن الجن لا تدخل بيتا يكون فيه الحزاء، والناس يشربون ماءه من الريح ويعلق على الصبيان إذا خشي على أحدهم أن يكون به شيء.

And al-ḥazā and al-ḥazā' both: a plant resembling celery, and it is among the noble vegetables, and its smell is pungent. The Arabs claim that jinn do not enter a house where al-ḥazā' is present, and people drink its water for wind and hang it on children if one is feared to be afflicted by something.

الحزاة: نبت بالبادية يشبه الكرفس إلا أنه أعظم ورقا منه، والحزا جنس لها، والطشة الزكام، وفي رواية: يشتريها أكايس النساء للخافية والإقلات ؛ الخافية: الجن، والإقلات: موت الولد، كأنهم كانوا يرون ذلك من قبل الجن، فإذا تبخرن به منعهن من ذلك.

Al-ḥazāh: a plant in the desert resembling celery, except that its leaves are larger than it, and al-ḥazā is its genus, and al-ṭashshah is a cold. In one narration: Wise women buy it for the unseen (jinn) and the death of children; al-khāfiyah: jinn, and al-iqlāt: death of children, as if they attributed it to jinn, so if they fumigated with it, it prevented them from that.

تقول ريح حزاء فالنجاء؛

It is said: A ḥazā' wind, so flee;

هو نبات ذفر يتدخن به للأرواح، يشبه الكرفس وهو أعظم منه، فيقال: اهرب إن هذا ريح شر.

It is a fragrant plant used for fumigation against spirits, resembling celery but larger, and it is said: Flee, for this is a wind of evil.

ودخل عمرو بن الحكم النهدي على يزيد بن المهلب وهو في الحبس. فلما رآه قال: أبا خالد ريح حزاء فالنجاء، لا تكن فريسة للأسد اللابد، أي أن هذا تباشير شر، وما يجيء بعد هذا شر منه.

And Amr bin Al-Hakam Al-Nahdi entered upon Yazid bin Al-Muhallab while he was in prison. When he saw him, he said: Abu Khalid, a ḥazā' wind, so flee! Do not be prey for the lurking lion; meaning, this is a harbinger of evil, and what comes after this is worse.

يقال أحزى يحزي إحزاء إذا هاب؛

It is said: He became fearful, he becomes fearful, with iḥzā', if he feared;

ونفسي أرادت هجر ليلى فلم تطق ... لها الهجر هابته، وأحزى جنينها

And my soul wanted to abandon Layla but could not; it feared the abandonment, and its offspring became fearful.

كعوذ المعطعف أحزى لها ... بمصدره الماء رأم ردي

Like a newly-parturient camel, fearful for it... from its source, water, a weak offspring returned.

والمحزوزي: المنتصب، وقيل: هو القلق، وقيل: المنكسر.

And al-maḥzūzī: the erect, and it is said: it is the unsteady, and it is said: the broken.

وحزوى والحزواء وحزوزى: مواضع.

And Ḥazwā, and Al-Ḥazwā', and Ḥuzūzā: places.

وحزوى: جبل من جبال الدهناء؛

And Ḥazwā: a mountain from the mountains of Al-Dahna;

وقد نزلت به.

And I encamped there.

وحزوى، بالضم: اسم عجمة من عجم الدهناء، وهي جمهور عظيم يعلو تلك الجماهير؛

And Ḥazwā, with dammah: the name of a tract of land among the tracts of Al-Dahna, and it is a great collection that rises above those collections;

نبت عيناك عن طلل بحزوى، ... عفته الريح وامتنح القطارا

May your eyes not grow weary of a ruin in Ḥazwā, ... the wind has erased it and the rain has poured down.

والنسبة إليها حزاوي؛

And the attribution to it is Ḥazāwī;

وقال ذو الرمة: حزاوية أو عوهج معقلية ... ترود بأعطاف الرمال الحزاور

And Dhū Al-Rummah said: A Ḥazāwī or a 'Āwhaj Mu'qallī... roaming the edges of the sandy plains, the ḥazāwir.

وقوله الحزاور صوابه الحرائر وهي كرائم الرمال، وأما الحزاور فهي الروابي الصغار، الواحدة حزورة.

And his saying 'al-ḥazāwir' is correctly 'al-ḥarā'ir' which are the noble sands, but 'al-ḥazāwir' are the small dunes, the singular is ḥazūrah.
