حرى الشيء يحري حريا: نقص
Something decreases, it decreases, a decrease: it diminished.
أحراه الزمان
Time caused it to decrease.
الحري النقصان بعد الزيادة
Al-Hiri is the decrease after an increase.
إنه يحري كما يحري القمر حريا ينقص الأول منه فالأول
He decreases like the moon decreases, a decrease, the first part of it diminishing, then the next.
فما زال جسمه يحري أي ينقص
And his body continued to decrease, meaning to diminish.
فما زال جسمه يحري بعد وفاة رسول الله، صلى الله عليه وسلم، حتى لحق به
And his body continued to decrease after the death of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, until he joined him.
حراء عليه قومه أي غضاب ذوو هم وغم قد انتقصهم أمره وعيل صبرهم به حتى أثر في أجسامهم
Hira upon him his people, meaning angry, possessing worry and grief, his affair having diminished them, and their patience exhausted by him until it affected their bodies.
الحارية: الأفعى التي قد كبرت ونقص جسمها من الكبر ولم يبق إلا رأسها ونفسها وسمها
Al-Hariya: The viper that has grown old and its body has shrunk from age, leaving only its head, its breath, and its venom.
والذكر حار
And the male is Hari.
الحراة: الساحة والعقوة والناحية، وكذلك الحرا، مقصور
Al-Harah: The courtyard, the vicinity, and the side, and likewise Al-Hira, shortened.
اذهب فلا أرينك بحراي وحراتي
Go, and may I not see you in my vicinity and my surroundings.
لا تطر حرانا أي لا تقرب ما حولنا
Do not approach our vicinity, meaning do not come near what is around us.
لم يكن زيد بن خالد يقربه بحراه سخطا لله عز وجل
Zayd ibn Khalid did not approach him in his vicinity out of displeasure with Allah, the Almighty.
الحرا، بالفتح والقصر: جناب الرجل
Al-Hira, with fatha and qasr: The side of a man.
الحرا والحراة: ناحية الشيء
Al-Hira and Al-Hira: The side of a thing.
الحرا: موضع البيض
Al-Hira: The place of eggs.
هو الأفحوص والأدحي، والجمع أحراء
It is the nesting place and the egg-laying place, and the plural is Ahra'.
الحرا: الكناس
Al-Hira: The lair.
الحرا كل موضع لظبي يأوي إليه
Al-Hira is every place a gazelle retreats to.
الحرا عند العرب ما رواه أبو عبيد عن الأصمعي: الحرا جناب الرجل وما حوله
Al-Hira among the Arabs, as narrated by Abu Ubaid from Al-Asma'i: Al-Hira is the side of a man and what is around him.
نزل بحراه وعراه إذا نزل بساحته
He settled in his vicinity and his surroundings if he settled in his courtyard.
وحرا مبيض النعام: ما حوله، وكذلك حرا كناس الظبي ما حوله
And the vicinity of the ostrich's nesting place: what is around it, and likewise the vicinity of the gazelle's lair, what is around it.
الحرا والحراة: الصوت والجلبة وصوت التهاب النار وحفيف الشجر
Al-Hira and Al-Hira: The sound, the clamor, the sound of the fire's blaze, and the rustling of trees.
حراة النار، مقصور: التهابها
Harat an-nar, shortened: its blaze.
والحرى: الخليق كقولك بالحرى أن يكون ذلك
And Al-Hira: The fitting, like your saying, it is fitting that this be.
وإنه لحرى بكذا وحر وحري، فمن قال حرى لم يغيره عن لفظه فيما زاد على الواحد وسوى بين الجنسين، أعني المذكر والمؤنث، لأنه مصدر
And indeed he is worthy of such and such, and he is worthy and he is worthy. So whoever says 'Hira' does not change it from its form for more than one, and equates the two genders, meaning masculine and feminine, because it is a masdar.
وهن حرى أن لا يثبنك نقرة، وأنت حرى بالنار حين تثيب
And they are fitting that they not reward you with a peck, and you are worthy of the fire when you reward.
فقال: حريان وحرون وحرية وحريتان وحريات وحريان وحريون وحرية وحريتان وحريات
And he said: Hariyani, Harun, Hariyya, Hariyatani, Hariyat, Hariyani, Haruyun, Hariyya, Hariyatani, Hariyat.
وهم أحرياء بذلك وهن حرايا وأنتم أحراء، جمع حر
And they are worthy of that, and they are Harraya, and you are Ahra', the plural of 'Hurr'.
وقد يجوز أن تثني ما لا تجمع لأن الكسائي حكي عن بعض العرب أنهم يثنون ما لا يجمعون فيقول إنهما لحريان أن يفعلا
And it may be permissible to dualize what is not pluralized because Al-Kisa'i narrated from some Arabs that they dualize what is not pluralized, saying: 'Indeed, they are likely to do it.'
أودى بني فما برحلي منهم إلا غلاما بِيَة ضنيان بالفتح، كذا أنشده أبو علي الفارسي وصرح بأنه مفتوح
My offspring perished, and I have no one left from them except a weak, sickly boy, with fatha. Thus Abu Ali Al-Farsi recited it and stated that it is fathah.
وحري طول عيش أن يمل
And it is likely that a long life becomes tiresome.
إن هذا لحري إن خطب أن ينكح
Indeed, this one is worthy, if he proposes, to be married.
يقال: فلان حري بكذا وحرى بكذا وحر بكذا وبالحرى أن يكون كذا أي جدير وخليق
It is said: So-and-so is worthy of such and such, and worthy of such and such, and worthy of such and such, and it is fitting that it be so, meaning deserving and suitable.
وإنه لمحرى أن يفعل ذلك؛ عن اللحياني
And indeed, it is fitting for him to do that; from Al-Lihyani.
وإنه لمحراة أن يفعل، ولا يثنى ولا يجمع ولا يؤنث كقولك مخلقة ومقمنة
And indeed, it is a fitting thing to do, and it is not dualized, pluralized, or feminized, like your saying 'mukhalliqah' and 'muqammanah'.
فأحر به لطول فقر
So how fitting it is for him due to long poverty.
فأحر بمن رامنا أن يخيبا
So how fitting it is for whoever aims for us to be disappointed.
وقولهم في الرجل إذا بلغ الخمسين حرى؛ قال ثعلب: معناه هو حرى أن ينال الخير كله
And their saying about a man when he reaches fifty is 'Hira'; Tha'lab said: Its meaning is that he is worthy of obtaining all good.
إذا كان الرجل يدعو في شبيبته ثم أصابه أمر بعد ما كبر فبالحرى أن يستجاب له
If a man prays in his youth, then something befalls him after he has grown old, then it is likely that his prayer will be answered.
ومن أحر به اشتق التحري في الأشياء ونحوها، وهو طلب ما هو أحرى بالاستعمال في غالب الظن، كما اشتق التقمن من القمين
And from 'Ahra bihi' is derived 'At-tahurri' in things and the like, which is seeking what is more fitting for use in most likelihood, just as 'At-taqammun' is derived from 'Al-Qammin'.
وفلان يتحرى الأمر أي يتوخاه ويقصده
And so-and-so seeks the matter, meaning he aims for it and intends it.
والتحري: قصد الأولى والأحق، مأخوذ من الحرى وهو الخليق، والتوخي مثله
And At-tahurri: Intending the first and the most fitting, derived from 'Al-Hira', which is the fitting, and 'At-tawakkhi' is similar.
تحروا ليلة القدر في العشر الأواخر أي تعمدوا طلبها فيها
Seek Laylat al-Qadr in the last ten nights, meaning intentionally seek it therein.
والتحري: القصد والاجتهاد في الطلب والعزم على تخصيص الشيء بالفعل والقول
And At-tahurri: The intention and diligence in seeking, and the resolve to specify something by action and word.
لا تتحروا بالصلاة طلوع الشمس وغروبها
Do not intentionally pray at sunrise and sunset.
تحرى فلان بالمكان أي تمكث
So-and-so stayed in the place, meaning he lingered.
فأولئك تحروا رشدا؛ أي توخوا وعمدوا
Then those are the ones who sought guidance; meaning they aimed for it and intended it.
ديمة هطلاء فيها وطف، طبق الأرض تحرى وتدر
A heavy, pouring rain with abundance, covering the earth, seeking and spreading.
ما رأيت من حراته وحراه
I have not seen from his vicinity and his surroundings.
حراء أن يكون ذاك: في معنى عسى
Hira that it be so: in the meaning of 'asa' (perhaps, it is likely).
تحرى ذلك: تعمده
He sought that: he intended it.
جبل بمكة معروف، يذكر ويؤنث
A mountain in Mecca, known, it is masculine and feminine.
ورب وجه من حراء منحن
And perhaps a face from Hira, bent.
وأعظمنا ببطن حراء نارا
And the greatest of us in the belly of Hira, fire.
كان يتحنث بحراء، هو بالكسر والمد جبل من جبال مكة
He used to practice asceticism in Hira, it is with kasr and madd, a mountain from the mountains of Mecca.
الحروة حرقة يجدها الرجل في حلقه وصدره ورأسه من الغيظ والوجع
Al-Harwah is a burning sensation a man finds in his throat, chest, and head from anger and pain.
الحروة: الرائحة الكريهة مع حدة في الخياشيم
Al-Harwah: A foul smell with sharpness in the nostrils.
الحروة والحراوة: حرافة تكون في طعم نحو الخردل وما أشبهه حتى يقال: لهذا الكحل حراوة ومضاضة في العين
Al-Harwah and Al-Harawah: A pungency that occurs in taste, like mustard and its like, until it is said: This kohl has a sharpness and bitterness in the eye.
إني لأجد لهذا الطعام حروة وحراوة أي حرارة، وذلك من حرافة شيء يؤكل
I find in this food a harwah and a harawah, meaning heat, and that is from the pungency of something eaten.
رحاه إذا عظمه، وحراه إذا أضاقه
Rahahu if you magnify it, and Harahu if you make it narrow.
