تحديت فلانا إذا باريته في فعل ونازعته الغلبة.

You challenged someone if you competed with him in an action and vied for dominance.

وتحدى الرجل تعمده، وتحداه: باراه ونازعه الغلبة، وهي الحديا.

And the man deliberately sought it, and he challenged him: he competed with him and vied for dominance, and that is 'al-ḥadyā'.

وأنا حدياك في هذا الأمر أي ابرز لي فيه؛

And I am your challenger in this matter, meaning confront me in it;

حديا الناس كلهم جميعا، ... مقارعة بنيهم عن بنينا

Confront all the people, ... repelling their sons on behalf of our sons.

وفي التهذيب تقول: أنا حدياك بهذا الأمر أي ابرز لي وحدك وجارني؛

And in Al-Tahdhib you say: I am your challenger in this matter, meaning confront me alone and stand by me;

حديا الناس كلهمو جميعا ... لنغلب في الخطوب الأولينا

Confront all the people together ... so that we may prevail in the first calamities.

قولهم حادي عشر مقلوب من واحد لأن تقدير واحد فاعل فأخروا الفاء، وهي الواو، فقلبت ياء لانكسار ما قبلها، وقدم العين فصار تقديره عالف.

Their saying 'ḥādī ʿashar' is a transposition from 'wāḥid' because the structure of 'wāḥid' is fāʿil, so they moved the fāʾ, which is the wāw, and it was changed to yāʾ due to the kasrah before it, and they brought forward the ʿayn, so its structure became ʿālif.

لا بأس بقتل الحدو والأفعو ؛ هي لغة في الوقف على ما آخره ألف، تقلب الألف واوا، ومنهم من يقلبها ياء، يخفف ويشدد.

There is no harm in killing 'al-ḥadw' and 'al-afʿū'; it is a pronunciation in pause on what ends in an alif, the alif is changed to a wāw, and some change it to a yāʾ, with shortening and lengthening.

والحدو: هو الحدأ، جمع حدأة وهي الطائر المعروف، فلما سكن الهمز للوقف صارت ألفا فقلبها واوا؛

And 'al-ḥadw': it is 'al-ḥad'a', the plural of 'ḥad'a', which is the known bird, so when the hamza is silenced for the pause, it becomes an alif, and it is changed to a wāw;

إن أر مطمعي ف حدو تلمع أي تختطف الشيء في انقضاضها، وقد أجرى الوصل مجرى الوقف فقلب وشدد، وقيل: أهل مكة يسمون الحدأ حدوا بالتشديد.

If my desire is to snatch, then 'ḥadw' flashes, meaning it snatches the thing in its dive, and the connection is treated as a pause, so it is changed and intensified, and it is said: the people of Mecca call 'al-ḥad'a' 'al-ḥadw' with tashdid.

تحدوني عليها خلة واحدة أي تبعثني وتسوقني عليها خصلة واحدة، وهو من حدو الإبل فإنه من أكبر الأشياء على سوقها وبعثها.

A single desire urged me on towards it, meaning it sends me and drives me towards it, and it is from driving camels, as it is one of the greatest things for driving and sending them.
