وَجَأَى إِذَا مَنَعَ.

And Jaa-ya if it means to prevent.

وَالرَّاعِي لَا يَجْأَى الْغَنَمَ أَيْ لَا يَحْفَظُهَا فَهِيَ تَفِرُّ عَلَيْهِ.

And the shepherd does not Jaa-y the sheep, meaning he does not guard them, so they scatter from him.

وَأَحْمَقُ مَا يَجْأَى مَرْغَهُ أَيْ لَا يَحْبِسُ لُعَابَهُ وَلَا يَرُدُّهُ.

And the most foolish is he who Jaa-ys his saliva, meaning he does not hold back his saliva nor return it.

وَجَأَى السِّقَاءَ: رَقَعَهُ، وَجَأْوٌ جَأَوْتُهُ كَذَلِكَ، وَاسْمُ الرُّقْعَةِ جَأْوُ الْجِئْوَةِ.

And he patched the waterskin: he mended it, and Jao, I Jaoed it likewise, and the name of the patch is Jao al-Jiwah.

وَكَتِيبَةٌ جَأْوٌ جَأْوَاءُ بَيِّنَةُ الْجَأَى: وَهِيَ الَّتِي يَعْلُوهَا لَوْنُ السَّوَادِ لِكَثْرَةِ الدُّرُوعِ.

And a Jao Jao-waa' battalion, clear in its Jaa-y: it is one that is covered by a blackish color due to the abundance of armor.

وَجَأَى الثَّوْبَ جَأْيًا: خَاطَهُ وَأَصْلَحَهُ؛ عَنْ كُرَاعٍ.

And he Jaa-yed the garment, Jaa-yan: he sewed it and repaired it; according to Kura'.

وَقَدْ جَأَى عَلَى الشَّيْءِ جَأْيًا إِذَا عَضَّ عَلَيْهِ.

And he has Jaa-yed on the thing, Jaa-yan, if he bit down on it.

أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ: أَجِئْ عَلَيْكَ هَذَا أَيْ غَطِّهِ؛ قَالَ لَبِيدٌ «1»: حَوَاسِرُ لَا يَجِئْنَ عَلَى الْخُدَّامِ أَيْ لَا يَسْتُرْنَ.

Abu Ubaidah said: This Aj'i-s upon you, meaning cover it; Labid said: 'They are uncovered, not covering the servants', meaning they do not conceal.

وَيُقَالُ: أَجِئْ عَلَيْكَ ثَوْبُكَ.

And it is said: Your garment Aj'i-s upon you.

وَجَأْوُ الْجِئَاوَةِ مِثْلُ الْجَعَاوَةِ: وِعَاءُ الْقِدْرِ أَوْ شَيْءٌ يُوضَعُ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ جِلْدٍ أَوْ خَصْفَةٍ، وَجَمْعُهَا جَأْوٌ جِئَاءٌ مِثْلُ جِرَاحَةٍ وَجِرَاحٍ؛

And Jao al-Ji'awah is like al-Ja'awah: the pot's container or something placed upon it made of leather or a palm-leaf mat, and its plural is Jao Ji'aa' like Jirahah and Jirah;

وَكَانَ أَبُو عَمْرٍو يَقُولُ الْجِيَّاءَ وَالْجَوَاءَ يَعْنِي بِذَلِكَ الْوِعَاءَ أَيْضًا.

And Abu Amr used to say al-Jiyyaa' and al-Jawwaa', meaning by that the container as well.

وَفِي حَدِيثِ عَلِيٍّ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ: لَأَنْ أَطْلِيَ بِجَوَاءِ قِدْرٍ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ أَنْ أَطْلِيَ بِالزَّعْفَرَانِ.

And in the narration of Ali, may God be pleased with him: 'To be smeared with the lid of a pot is more beloved to me than to be smeared with saffron.'

وَأَمَّا الْخِرْقَةُ الَّتِي يُنْزَلُ بِهَا الْقِدْرُ عَنِ الْأَثَافِي فَهِيَ الْجَعَّالُ:

And as for the rag with which the pot is lowered from the tripods, it is al-Ja'aal.

ابْنُ بَرِّيٍّ: يُقَالُ جَأْوٌ جَأَوْتُ الْقِدْرَ جَعَلْتُ لَهَا جِئَاوَةً.

Ibn Barrī said: It is said Jao, I Jaoed the pot, I made for it a Ji'awah.

وَجَأَيْتُ الْقِدْرَ وَجَأَيْتُ الثَّوْبَ جَمِيعُ ذَلِكَ بِالْوَاوِ وَالْيَاءِ.

And I Jaa-yed the pot and I Jaa-yed the garment, all of that with the waw and the yaa'.

وَجَأْوُ الْجُؤْوَةِ مِثْلُ الْجَعْوَةِ لَوْنٌ مِنْ أَلْوَانِ الْخَيْلِ وَالْإِبِلِ، وَهِيَ حُمْرَةٌ تَضْرِبُ إِلَى السَّوَادِ، يُقَالُ: فَرَسٌ جَأْوٌ أَجْأَى، وَالْأُنْثَى جَأْوٌ جَأْوَاءُ، وَقَدْ جُئِيَ الْفَرَسُ؛

And Jao al-Ju'wah is like al-Ja'wah, a color of horses and camels, which is a redness tending towards blackness. It is said: a Jao Aj'aa' horse, and the female is a Jao Jao-waa', and the horse has become Jui-ya.

جَأَى الْبَعِيرُ وَجَأْوٌ اجْأَوَى مِثْلُ ارْعَوَى جَأْوٌ يَجْأَوِي مِثْلُ يَرْعَوِي جَأْوٌ اجْئِوَّاءٌ مِثْلُ ارْعِوَّاءٍ فَجُئِيَ وَجَأْوٌ اجْأَوَى مِثْلُ شَهِبَ وَاشْهَبَّ.

The camel Jaa-ya and Jao Ij'awaa like Ir'awaa, Jao Yaj'awi like Yar'awi, Jao Ij'iwwaa' like Ir'iwwaa', so it became Jui-ya, and Jao Ij'awaa like Shahiba and Ishhabba.

وَفِي حَدِيثِ يَأْجُوجَ وَمَأْجُوجَ: وَتَجَأَّى الْأَرْضُ مِنْ نَتْنِهِمْ حِينَ يَمُوتُونَ.

And in the narration of Gog and Magog: And the earth will Taj'aa from their stench when they die.

فَيَكُونُ الْمَعْنَى أَنَّ الْأَرْضَ تَقْذِفُ صَدِيدَهُمْ وَجِيَفَهُمْ فَلَا تَشْرَبُهُ وَلَا تُمْسِكُهُ، كَمَا لَا يَحْبِسُ هَذَا السِّقَاءُ الْمَاءَ،

So the meaning would be that the earth casts out their pus and their carcasses, and does not drink it nor hold it, just as this waterskin does not hold water,

أَوْ مِنْ قَوْلِهِمْ سَمِعْتُ سِرًّا فَمَا جَأَيْتُهُ أَيْ مَا كَتَمْتُهُ، يَعْنِي أَنَّ الْأَرْضَ يَسْتَتِرُ وَجْهُهَا مِنْ كَثْرَةِ جِيَفِهِمْ؛

Or from their saying 'I heard a secret and did not Jaa-y-tu it', meaning the earth's face is hidden by the abundance of their carcasses;

وَفِي حَدِيثِ عَاتِكَةَ بِنْتِ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ: لَأَنْ أَطْلِيَ بِجَوَاءِ قِدْرٍ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ أَنْ أَطْلِيَ بِالزَّعْفَرَانِ.

And in the narration of Atikah bint Abd al-Muttalib: 'To be smeared with the lid of a pot is more beloved to me than to be smeared with saffron.'

أَيْ بِجَيْشٍ عَظِيمٍ تَجْتَمِعُ مَقَانِبُهُ مِنْ أَطْرَافِهِ وَنَوَاحِيهِ.

Meaning with a great army whose banners gather from its edges and its surroundings.

وَالْجِيَاءُ وَالْجَوَاءُ مَقْلُوبَانِ، قُلِبَتِ الْعَيْنُ إِلَى مَكَانِ اللَّامِ وَاللَّامُ إِلَى مَكَانِ الْعَيْنِ، فَمَنْ قَالَ جَأَيْتُ قَالَ الْجِيَاءُ، وَمَنْ قَالَ جَأَوْتُ قَالَ الْجَوَاءُ.

And al-Jiyaa' and al-Jawwaa' are inverted, the 'ayn is moved to the place of the lam and the lam to the place of the 'ayn. So whoever said Jaa-y-tu, he said al-Jiyaa', and whoever said Jao-tu, he said al-Jawwaa'.

وَجَاءَ يَجُوءُ لُغَةٌ فِي يَجِيءُ، وَحَكَى سِيبَوَيْهِ أَنَا أَجُوءُكَ وَأَنْبُؤُكَ عَلَى الْمُضَارَعَةِ، قَالَ: وَمِثْلُهُ هُوَ مُنْحَدِرٌ مِنَ الْجَبَلِ عَلَى الْإِتْبَاعِ، قَالَ حَكَاهُ سِيبَوَيْهِ.

And Jaa'a Yajoo' is a dialectal variation of Yajee'u (to come). Sibawayh narrated: 'Ana ajoo'uka and anboo'uka' by analogy. He said: And similar to it is 'Huwa munhadirun min al-jabal 'ala al-itbaa'' (He is descending from the mountain by following), Sibawayh narrated this.

وَجَاءَ: اسْمُ رَجُلٍ؛ قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُدَ الرُّؤَاسِيُّ: ظَلْتُ يَحَابِرُ تُدْعَى وَسَطَ أَرْحُلِنَا، ... وَالْمُسْتَمِيتُونَ مِنْ جَاءَ وَمِنْ حَكَمَ

And Jaa': is the name of a man; Abu Dawud al-Ru'asi said: 'I remained being called by the name of Yahabir in the midst of our camps, ... and the determined ones from Jaa' and from Hakam.'
