الثَّوَاء: طُولُ المَقَامِ
Dwelling: prolonged stay.
ثَوَى يَثْوِي ثَوَاءً وَثَوِيَ بِالمَكَانِ وَثَوِيْتُهُ ثَوَاءً وَثُؤَوِيًّا مِثْلَ مَضَى يَمْضِي مَضَاءً وَمُضِيًّا؛
Thawa yathwi thuwa'an, and thuwiya bil-makan, and thuwitu-hu thuwa'an wa thu'awiyyan, like mada yamdi mada'an wa mudiyyan;
وَأَثْوَيْتُ بِهِ: أَطَلْتُ الإِقَامَةَ بِهِ.
And athwaytu bihi: I prolonged the stay in it.
وَأَثْوَيْتُهُ أَنَا وَثَوِّيْتُهُ؛ الأَخِيرَةُ عَنْ كُرَاعٍ: أَلْزَمْتُهُ الثَّوَاءَ فِيهِ.
And I made him stay, and I made him stay; the latter from Kara': I compelled him to reside in it.
وَثَوَى بِالمَكَانِ: نَزَلَ فِيهِ، وَبِهِ سُمِّيَ المَنْزِلُ مَثْوَىً.
And thawa bil-makan: he lodged in it, and from this, the dwelling is named 'mathwa'.
وَالمَثْوَى: المَوْضِعُ الَّذِي يُقَامُ بِهِ، وَجَمْعُهُ المَثَاوِي.
And the mathwa: the place where one stays, and its plural is 'al-mathawi'.
وَمَثْوَى الرَّجُلِ: مَنْزِلُهُ.
And the mathwa of a man: his dwelling.
وَفِي كِتَابِ أَهْلِ نَجْرَانَ: وَعَلَى نَجْرَانَ مَثْوَى رُسُلِي أَيْ مَسْكَنُهُمْ مُدَّةَ مُقَامِهِمْ وَنُزُلِهِمْ.
And in the book of the people of Najran: 'And upon Najran is the dwelling place of My messengers', meaning their lodging for the duration of their stay and their accommodation.
وَفِي الحَدِيثِ: أَنَّ رَمْحَ النَّبِيِّ، صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، كَانَ اسْمُهُ المَثْوَى ؛ سُمِّيَ بِهِ لِأَنَّهُ يُثْبِتُ المَطْعُونَ بِهِ، مِنَ الثَّوَاءِ الإِقَامَةُ.
And in the hadith: that the Prophet's spear, peace be upon him, was named 'Al-Mathwi'; it was named so because it fixes the one struck by it, from 'al-thawa' meaning residence.
وَأَثْوَيْتُ بِالمَكَانِ: لُغَةٌ فِي ثُوِّيَتَ؛
And athwaytu bil-makan: a variant pronunciation of 'thuwiya';
وَأَثْوَى غَيْرِي: يَتَعَدَّى وَلَا يَتَعَدَّى، وَثُوِّيَ غَيْرِي تَثْوِيَةً.
And athwa ghayri: it is transitive and intransitive, and thuwwiya ghayri tathwiyatan.
قَالَ النَّارُ مَثْوَاكُمْ ؛
He said, 'The Fire is your dwelling place';
أَلَا تَرَى أَنَّهُ لَا يَخْلُو مِنْ أَنْ يَكُونَ مَوْضِعًا أَوْ مَصْدَرًا؟
Do you not see that it cannot be devoid of being either a place or a source (masdar)?
فَإِذَا لَمْ يَكُنْ مَوْضِعًا ثَبَتَ أَنَّهُ مَصْدَرٌ، وَالمَعْنَى النَّارُ ذَاتُ إِقَامَتِكُمْ أَيْ النَّارُ ذَاتُ إِقَامَتِكُمْ فِيهَا خَالِدِينَ
So if it is not a place, it is established that it is a source (masdar), and the meaning is 'The Fire is the place of your staying', meaning 'The Fire is the place of your staying in it, abiding eternally'.
وَفِي الحَدِيثِ عَنْ عُمَرَ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ: أَصْلِحُوا مَثَاوِيكُمْ وَأَخِيفُوا الهَوَامَّ قَبْلَ أَنْ تُخِيفَكُمْ وَلَا تَلِثُّوا بِدَارٍ مُعْجِزَةٍ ؛
And in the hadith from Umar, may Allah be pleased with him: 'Rectify your dwellings and make the vermin fear before they make you fear, and do not linger in a place of helplessness';
قَالَ: المَثَاوِي هُنَا المَنَازِلُ جَمْعُ مَثْوَى، وَالهَوَامُّ الحَيَّاتُ وَالعَقَارِبُ، وَلَا تَلِثُّوا أَيْ لَا تُقِيمُوا، وَالمُعْجِزَةُ وَالمُعْجِزَةُ العَجْزُ.
He said: 'Al-mathawi' here means dwellings, the plural of 'mathwa', and 'al-hawamm' are snakes and scorpions, and 'la taliththu' means 'do not stay', and 'al-mu'jizah' and 'al-mu'jizah' means inability.
وَقَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: إِنَّهُ رَبِّي أَحْسَنَ مَثْوَايَ ؛ أَيْ إِنَّهُ تَوَلَّانِي فِي طُولِ مَقَامِي.
And His saying, the Almighty: 'Indeed, my Lord has been good to me, having made my dwelling place good'; meaning He took care of me during my long stay.
وَيُقَالُ لِلْغَرِيبِ إِذَا لَزِمَ بَلْدَةً: هُوَ ثَاوِيهَا.
And it is said of a stranger who settles in a town: he is its 'thawi'.
وَأَثْوَانِي الرَّجُلُ: أَضَافَنِي.
And athwani al-rajul: he hosted me.
يُقَالُ: أَنْزَلَنِي الرَّجُلُ فَأَثْوَانِي ثَوَاءً حَسَنًا.
It is said: The man lodged me and hosted me with a good stay.
وَرَبُّ البَيْتِ: أَبُو مَثْوَاهُ؛
And the master of the house: the 'abu mathwah';
أَثْوَى وَقَصَّرَ لَيْلَهُ لِيَزْوَدَا، ... وَمَضَى وَأَخْلَفَ مِنْ قَتِيلَةَ مَوْعِدًا
He stayed and shortened his night to provide provisions, ... and he departed and broke a promise with Qatilah.
وَأَبُو مَثْوَى الرَّجُلِ: صَاحِبُ مَنْزِلِهِ.
And the 'abu mathwa' of a man: his housemate.
وَأُمُّ مَثْوَاهُ: صَاحِبَتُهُ.
And the 'umm mathwah' of him: his female housemate.
وَفِي حَدِيثِ عُمَرَ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ: أَنَّهُ كَتَبَ إِلَيْهِ فِي رَجُلٍ قِيلَ لَهُ مَتَى عَهْدُكَ بِالنِّسَاءِ؟ قَالَ: البَارِحَةَ، قِيلَ: بِمَنْ؟ قَالَ: بِأُمِّ مَثْوَايَ أَيْ رَبَّةَ المَنْزِلِ الَّذِي بَاتَ فِيهِ، وَلَمْ يُرِدْ زَوْجَتَهُ لِأَنَّ تَمَامَ الحَدِيثِ: فَقِيلَ لَهُ أَمَا عَرَفْتَ أَنَّ اللَّهَ قَدْ حَرَّمَ الزِّنَا؟ فَقَالَ: لَا.
And in the hadith of Umar, may Allah be pleased with him: that he wrote to him concerning a man who was asked, 'When was your last encounter with women?' He said, 'Last night.' It was asked, 'With whom?' He said, 'With the mistress of my dwelling', meaning the lady of the house where he spent the night, and he did not mean his wife because the full hadith is: Then he was told, 'Did you not know that Allah has forbidden adultery?' He said, 'No.'
وَأَبُو مَثْوَاكَ: ضَيْفُكَ الَّذِي تُضِيفُهُ.
And 'abu mathwak': your guest whom you host.
وَالثَّوِيُّ: بَيْتٌ فِي جَوْفِ بَيْتٍ.
And 'al-thawi': a house within a house.
وَالثَّوِيُّ: البَيْتُ المُهَيَّأُ لِلضَّيْفِ.
And 'al-thawi': the house prepared for the guest.
وَالثَّوِيُّ، عَلَى فَعِيلٍ: الضَّيْفُ نَفْسُهُ.
And 'al-thawi', on the pattern 'fa'eel': the guest himself.
وَفِي حَدِيثِ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ: أَنَّ رَجُلًا قَالَ تَثْوِيَتَهُ أَيْ تُضَيِّفَتَهُ.
And in the hadith of Abu Hurairah: a man said 'tathwiyatahu', meaning 'I hosted him'.
وَالثَّوِيُّ: المُجَاوِرُ فِي الحَرَمَيْنِ.
And 'al-thawi': the neighbor in the two sanctuaries.
وَالثَّوِيُّ: الصَّبُورُ فِي المَغَازِي المُجَمَّرُ وَهُوَ المَحْبُوسُ.
And 'al-thawi': the patient one in battles, the one who is confined.
وَالثَّوِيُّ أَيْضًا: الأَسِيرُ؛ عَنْ ثَعْلَبٍ، وَكُلُّ هَذَا مِنَ الثَّوَاءِ.
And 'al-thawi' also: the prisoner; according to Tha'lab, and all of this is from 'al-thawa'.
وَثَوَى الرَّجُلُ: قَبْرٌ لِأَنَّ ذَلِكَ ثَوَاءٌ لَا أَطْوَلَ مِنْهُ؛
And thawa al-rajul: a grave, because that is a stay from which there is no longer;
نَغْدُو فَنَتْرُكُ فِي المَزَاحِفِ مَنْ ثَوَى، ... وَنَمُرُّ فِي العَرَقَاتِ مَنْ لَمْ نُقْتَلْ «2». أَرَادَ بِقَوْلِهِ مَنْ ثَوَى أَيْ مَنْ قُتِلَ فَأَقَامَ هُنَالِكَ.
We go forth and leave among the slain those who have died and remained, ... and we pass through the passes of those not killed. By his saying 'man thawa', he meant 'whoever was killed and remained there'.
وَيُقَالُ لِلْمَقْتُولِ: قَدْ ثَوَى.
And it is said of the killed person: he has 'thawa'.
ثَوَى أَقَامَ فِي قَبْرِهِ؛
He stayed, he resided in his grave;
حَتَّى ظَنَّنِي القَوْمُ ثَاوِيًا
Until the people thought me to be residing (in the grave).
