يقال عقلت البعير بثنايين، يظهرون الياء بعد الألف وهي المدة التي كانت فيها
It is said, 'I tied the camel with two thinaayayn,' meaning they make the ya' appear after the alif, which is the elongation that was in it.
واحد الثنايين ثناء مثل كساء ممدود
The singular of al-thanaayayn is thanaa', like the elongated form of kisaa' (cloak).
يقال عقلت البعير بثنايين إذا عقلت يديه بطرفي حبل
It is said, 'I tied the camel with two thinaayayn' if you tie its two hands with the ends of a rope.
وعقلته بثنيين إذا عقله يدا واحدة بعقدتين
And 'I tied it with two thinyayn' if you tie its one hand with two knots.
والحبل يقال له الثناية
And the rope is called al-thanaayah.
وإنما قالوا ثنايين ولم يقولوا ثنايتين لأنه حبل واحد يشد بأحد طرفيه يد البعير وبالطرف الآخر اليد الأخرى
And they said 'thanaayayn' and not 'thanaayatayn' because it is one rope that ties one of the camel's hands with one of its ends and the other hand with the other end.
ومثله المذروان طرفا الأليتين، جعل واحدا
And like it are al-madhruwaan, the two ends of the buttocks, which are considered as one.
ومن قوله زهير يصف السانية وشد قتبها عليها: تمطو الرشاء، فتجري في ثنايتها
And from the saying of Zuhayr, describing the water-lifting she-camel and the tying of its saddle-frame upon it: 'It draws the rope, and it runs in its thinaayataha (rope/strap)'.
والثناية هاهنا: حبل يشد طرفاه في قتب السانية ويشد طرف الرشاء في مثناته
And al-thanaayah here means: a rope whose two ends are tied to the saddle-frame of the water-lifting she-camel, and the end of the rope is tied to its mithnaatihi (strap/loop).
وثنيا الحبل: طرفاه، واحدهما ثني
And the thiniyyaa of the rope are its two ends, and one of them is thini.
لعمرك، إن الموت ما أخطأ الفتى ... لكالطول المرخى، وثنياه في اليد
By your life, death does not miss the young man... It is like the extended tether, and its thinyahu is in the hand.
يقول إن الموت، وإن أخطأ الفتى، فإن مصيره إليه كما أن الفرس، وإن أرخي له طوله، فإن مصيره إلى أن يثنيه صاحبه إذ طرفه بيده
He means that death, even if it misses the young man, his fate is towards it, just as the horse, even if its tether is loosened for it, its fate is that its owner will bend it (turn it back) as its end is in his hand.
ويقال: ربق فلان أثناء الحبل إذا جعل وسطه أرباقا أي نشقا للشاء ينشق في أعناق البهم
And it is said: 'So-and-so tied the atnaa' of the rope' if he made its middle into loops, meaning a snare for sheep that is made into a noose for the necks of lambs.
ترى ثنانا إذا ما جاء بدأهم، ... وبدؤهم إن أتانا كان ثنيانا
You see our thunaanaa when their beginning comes... and their beginning, if it comes to us, is thiniyyaanaa.
طويل اليدين رهطه غير ثنية، ... أشم كريم جاره لا يرهق
Long-handed are his people, not thiniyyah (inferior), ... noble and lofty, his neighbor is not oppressed.
يكون لهم بدء الفجور وثناه
They will have the beginning of wickedness and its thinaahu (end/aftermath).
والثنية: واحدة الثنايا من السن
And al-thaniyyah: is one of the thinaayaa (incisors) of the tooth.
وثنايا الإنسان في فمه الأربع التي في مقدم فيه: ثنتان من فوق، وثنتان من أسفل
And the thinaayaa of a human in his mouth are the four in the front of his mouth: two from above, and two from below.
والثني من الإبل: الذي يلقي ثنيته، وذلك في السادسة
And al-thaniyy from camels: is one that sheds its thaniyyah, and that is in the sixth year.
البعير إذا استكمل الخامسة وطعن السادسة فهو ثني، وهو أدنى ما يجوز من سن الإبل في الأضاحي
A camel, when it completes the fifth year and enters the sixth, it is a thiniyy, and it is the minimum age allowed for camels in sacrifices.
والظبي ثني بعد الإجذاع ولا يزال كذلك حتى يموت
And the gazelle is thiniyy after shedding its first teeth and remains so until it dies.
أمر بالثنية من المعز
He ordered the thaniyyah of goats.
والثنية: طريق العقبة
And al-thaniyyah: is the path of the mountain pass.
ومنه قولهم: فلان طلاع الثنايا إذا كان ساميا لمعالي الأمور
And from it is their saying: 'So-and-so is tallaa' al-thanaayaa' if he is aspiring to high matters.
والثنية: الطريقة في الجبل كالنقب
And al-thaniyyah: is the path in the mountain like a pass.
ومثاني الدابة: ركبتاه ومرفقاه
And mithaaniddaabbah: are its knees and elbows.
والعقاب جبال طوال بعرض الطريق، فالطريق تأخذ فيها، وكل عقبة مسلوكة ثنية
And al-'iqab are long mountains across the width of the road, so the road takes through them, and every passable pass is a thaniyyah.
تعرضي مدارجا، وسومي، ... تعرض الجوزاء للنجوم

من يصعد ثنية المرار حط عنه ما حط عن بني إسرائيل
Whoever ascends Thaniyyat al-Mirar will have burdens removed from him as were removed from the Children of Israel.
أنا ابن جلا وطلاع الثنايا
I am Ibn Jalaa and Talla' al-Thanaayaa (one who undertakes great matters).
يا صخر، أو كنت تثني أن سيفك مشقوق ... الخشيبة، لا ناب ولا عصل
O Sakhr, or were you praising that your sword was split... the wooden hilt, neither sharp nor crooked.
يقول: تمتدح وتفتخر، فحذف وأوصل
He means: you praise yourself and boast, so he omitted and connected.
فلا نثني على الله تعالى ثم على المخلوق يثني إثناء أو ثناء
So we praise Allah the Almighty, then praise the created being, he praises with ithnaa' or thunaa'.
ويقال أثنى إذا قال خيرا أو شرا، وانثنى إذا اغتاب
And it is said 'athnaa' if he said good or evil, and 'inthanaa' if he slandered.
ثناء الدار: فناؤها
The thinaa' of the house: its courtyard.
واستثنيت الشيء من الشيء: حاشيته
And I excluded a thing from a thing: I set it aside.
الشهداء ثنية الله في الأرض
The martyrs are Allah's thuniyyah (chosen ones) on earth.
يعني من استثناه من الصعقة الأولى
Meaning those whom He excluded from the first stunning.
والنخلة المستثناة من المساومة
And the palm tree excluded from bargaining.
حلف فلان يمينا ليس فيها ثنيا ولا ثنوى
So-and-so swore an oath in which there was no thiniyya nor thunwa (exception).
والثنوة: الاستثناء
And al-thunwah: is the exception.
والثنيا المنهي عنها في البيع: أن يستثنى منه شيء مجهول فيفسد البيع
And al-thunyah prohibited in selling: is to exclude an unknown thing from it, which invalidates the sale.
نهى عن الثنيا إلا أن تعلم
He prohibited al-thunyah except if you know (what is excluded).
