رماه الله بثالثة الأثافي؛ قال أبو عبيدة: ثالثة الأثافي القطعة من الجبل يجعل إلى جانبها اثنتان، فتكون القطعة متصلة بالجبل
May God strike him with the third of the tripod stones; Abu Ubaidah said: The third of the tripod stones is a piece of the mountain to which two are attached, so the piece is connected to the mountain.
وإن قصيدة شنعاء مني، إذا حضرت، كثالثة الأثافي
And indeed, a scandalous poem from me, when it is present, is like the third of the tripod stones.
معنى قولهم رماه الله بثالثة الأثافي أي رماه بالشر كله فجعله أثفية بعد أثفية حتى إذا رمي بالثالثة لم يترك منها غاية
The meaning of their saying 'May God strike him with the third of the tripod stones' is that He struck him with all evil, making him an athfiyah after an athfiyah, until when he was struck by the third, no limit was left.
بل كل قوم، وإن عزوا وإن كرموا، عريفهم بأثافي الشر مرجوم
Rather, every people, even if they are mighty and noble, their leader is stoned with the tripod stones of evil.
والأثفية حجر مثل رأس الإنسان، وجمعها أثافي، بالتشديد، قال: ويجوز التخفيف، وتنصب القدور عليها، وما كان من حديد ذي ثلاث قوائم فإنه يسمى المنصب، ولا يسمى أثفية.
And the athfiyah is a stone like a human head, and its plural is athafi, with shaddah. He said: And shortening is permissible, and pots are set upon it. And what is made of iron with three legs is called the mansab, and it is not called an athfiyah.
ويقال: أثفيت القدر وثفيتها إذا وضعتها على الأثافي
And it is said: I provided the pot with tripod stones and I placed it on the tripod stones if I placed it upon the tripod stones.
والأثفية: أفعولة من ثفيت، كما يقال أدحية لمبيض النعام من دحيت.
And the athfiyah: af'oolah from thufiya, as it is said adhiyah for the ostrich's nesting place from dahiyya.
ومن جعلها كذلك قال أثفت القدر، فهي مؤثفة، وقال آثفت القدر فهي مؤثفة
And whoever made it so said 'he provided the pot with tripod stones', so it is mu'aththafah, and he said 'he provided the pot with tripod stones', so it is mu'aththafah.
لا تقذفني بركن لا كفاء له، ولو تأثفك الأعداء بالرفد
Do not cast me down with a support that has no equal, even if the enemies surround you with aid.
ولو تأثفك الأعداء بالرفد قال: ليس عندي من الأثفية في شيء، وإنما هو من قولك أثفت الرجل آثفه إذا تبعته، والآثف التابع.
And if the enemies surround you with aid, he said: I have nothing to do with the athfiyah in this. It is rather from your saying 'I pursued the man, I followed him' if you followed him, and the athif is the follower.
قدر مثفاة من أثفيت.
A pot that has been provided with tripod stones from my placing.
المرأة التي لزوجها امرأتان سواها
The woman who has two other wives besides her.
وثفيت المرأة إذا كان لزوجها امرأتان سواها وهي ثالثتهما، شبهن بأثافي القدر
And the woman is mathfiyah if her husband has two other wives besides her, and she is their third, they are likened to the tripod stones of a pot.
والمثفى: الذي مات له ثلاث نسوة.
And the mathfa: he who has had three wives die.
والمثفية التي مات لها ثلاثة أزواج، والرجل مثف.
And the mathfiyah is she who has had three husbands die, and the man is mathf.
المثفاة: سمة كالأثافي.
The mathfah: a brand mark like tripod stones.
أثيفيات: موضع، وقيل: أثيفيات أجبل صغار شبهت بأثافي القدر
Athifiyyat: a place, and it is said: Athifiyyat are small hills likened to the tripod stones of a pot.

You left our hearts at Athifiyyat, so we joined she-camels that carried us.
بقيت من فلان أثفية خشناء أي بقي منهم عدد كثير.
There remained of so-and-so a rough athfiyah, meaning a large number of them remained.
