العصبة من الفرسان، والجمع ثبات وثبون وثبون، على حد ما يطرد في هذا النوع، وتصغيرها ثبية.

والثبة والأثبية: الجماعة من الناس، وأصلها ثبي، والجمع أثابي وأثابية، الهاء فيها بدل من الياء الأخيرة؛
And al-thubbah and al-athbiyah: a group of people, and its origin is thubiy, and its plural is athabi and athabiyah, the ha' in it is a substitute for the final ya'.
وقد بدا أول شخص ينتظر دون أثابي من الخيل زمر، ... ضار غدا ينفض صئبان المدر «1» .
And the first person waiting appeared without groups of horses coming in, ... a harmful falcon tomorrow will shake off the dung beetles.
وقد أغدو على ثبة كرام ... نشاوى، واجدين لما نشاء
And I may go out in the morning with a noble company... intoxicated, finding what we desire.
والاختيار عند المحققين أن ثبة من الواو، وأصلها ثبوة حملا على أخواتها لأن أكثر هذه الأسماء الثنائية أن تكون لامها واوا نحو عزة وعضة، ولقولهم ثبوت له خيرا بعد خير أو شرا إذا وجهته إليه، كما تقول جاءت الخيل ثبات أي قطعة بعد قطعة.
And the preferred view among scholars is that thubbah is from waw, and its origin is thubwah, by analogy with its sisters because most of these dual-form names have waw as their final letter, like 'izzah and 'addah, and because of their saying 'thubut' for him, good after good or evil, if you direct it to him, just as you say 'the horses came in thubat', meaning piece after piece.
وثبيت الجيش إذا جعلته ثبة ثبة، وليس في ثبيت دليل أكثر من أن لامه حرف علة.
And the army was gathered if you made it into groups, and there is no evidence in thabitta beyond its final letter being a weak letter.
وأثابي ليس جمع ثبة، وإنما هو جمع أثبية، وأثبية في معنى ثبة؛ حكاها ابن جني في المصنف.
And athabi is not the plural of thubbah, but rather it is the plural of athbiyah, and athbiyah has the meaning of thubbah; Ibn Jinni narrated it in his work.
وثبيت الشيء: جمعته ثبة ثبة؛ قال: هل يصلح السيف بغير غمد؟ ... فثب ما سلفته من شكد أي فأضف إليه غيره واجمعه.
And thabbita the thing: you gathered it group by group; he said: Is a sword suitable without a scabbard? ... So thub what you have prepared from the tough wood, meaning add to it something else and gather it.
وثبة الحوض: وسطه، يجوز أن يكون من ثبيت أي جمعت، وذلك أن الماء إنما تجمعه من الحوض في وسطه، وجعلها أبو إسحاق من ثاب الماء يثوب، واستدل على ذلك بقولهم في تصغيرها ثويبة.
And the thubbah of the basin: its middle, it is possible that it is from thabbita, meaning you gathered, because water is gathered from the basin in its middle, and Abu Ishaq derived it from 'the water returned, it returns', and he supported this by their saying in its diminutive form 'thuyyibah'.
والثبة وسط الحوض الذي يثوب إليه الماء، والهاء هاهنا عوض من الواو الذاهبة من وسطه لأن أصله ثوب، كما قالوا أقام إقامة وأصله إقواما، فعوضوا الهاء من الواو الذاهبة من عين الفعل؛
And the thubbah is the middle of the basin to which the water returns, and the ha' here is a substitute for the waw that is missing from its middle because its origin is thawb, just as they said 'aqama' (he stood) with the origin 'iqwama', so they substituted the ha' for the waw missing from the root of the verb.
كم لي من ذي تدرإ مذب، ... أشوس، أباء على المثبي
How many have I of the one with horns, who is blamed... fierce, refusing to be blamed.
وثبيت الرجل: مدحته وأثنيت عليه في حياته إذا مدحته دفعة بعد دفعة.
And thabbita the man: you praised him and commended him during his life if you praised him repeatedly.
والثبي: الكثير «2». المدح للناس، وهو من ذلك لأنه جمع لمحاسنه وحشد لمناقبه.
And al-thabiyy: the abundant. Praise for people, and it is from that because it is a collection of his merits and a gathering of his virtues.
والتثبية: الثناء على الرجل في حياته؛ قال لبيد: يثبي ثناء من كريم، وقوله: ... ألا انعم على حسن التحية واشرب
And al-tathbiyah: praising a man during his lifetime; Labid said: He praises with praise from a noble one, and his saying: ... 'Be gracious with good greetings and drink'.
والتثبية: الدوام على الشيء. وثبيت على الشيء تثبية أي دمت عليه.
And al-tathbiyah: constancy in something. And thabbita on something tathbiyah, meaning you persisted in it.
والتثبية: أن تفعل مثل فعل أبيك ولزوم طريقه؛ أنشد ابن الأعرابي قول لبيد: أثبي في البلاد بذكر قيس، ... وودوا لو تسوخ بنا البلاد
And al-tathbiyah: to do like your father and follow his way; Ibn al-A'rabi recited the saying of Labid: 'May you follow in the land with the mention of Qays, ... and they wished the land would swallow us'.
وقضينا على ما لم تظهر فيه الياء من هذا الباب بالياء لأنها لام، وجعل ابن جني هذا الباب كله من الواو، واحتج بأن ما ذهب لامه إنما هو من الواو نحو أب وغد وأخ وهن في الواو، وقال في موضع آخر: التثبية إصلاح الشيء والزيادة عليه؛
And we have ruled that what does not show the ya' in this pattern has a ya' because it is a lam, and Ibn Jinni made this entire pattern from waw, arguing that what has its lam missing is from waw, like ab, ghad, akh, and hunna from waw, and he said in another place: Al-tathbiyah is improving something and adding to it.
وقال الجعدي: يثبون أرحاما وما يجفلونها، ... وأخلاق ود ذهبتها المذاهب «3» . قال: يثبون يعظمون يجعلونها ثبة.
And Al-Ja'di said: They honor kinship and do not shun it, ... and morals that have been taken away by circumstances. He said: Yuthabbuna means they honor, they make it a thubbah.
يقال: ثب معروفك أي أتمه وزد عليه.
It is said: Thub your favor, meaning complete it and add to it.
وقال غيره: أنا أعرفه تثبية أي أعرفه معرفة أعجمها ولا أستيقنها.
And another said: I know him tathbiyah, meaning I know him with a knowledge that I cannot comprehend or be certain of.
