وقيل: أراد بفردية الطواف والسعي أن الواجب منهما مرة واحدة لا تثنى ولا تكرر

And it was said: He intended by the individuality of the circumambulation and the running that the obligatory part of them is once, not repeated or duplicated.

وألف تو: تام فرد.

And 'alf tuw': a complete individual.

والتو: الحبل يفتل طاقة واحدة لا يجعل له قوى مبرمة، والجمع أتواء.

And al-tuw: the rope twisted from a single strand, not made with strong reinforcements, and its plural is atwaa'.

وجاء توا أي فردا

And he came 'tawwan', meaning individually.

والعرب تقول لكل مفرد تو، ولكل زوج زو.

And the Arabs say for every single thing 'tuw', and for every pair 'zaw'.

ويقال: وجه فلان من خيله بألف تو، والتو: ألف من الخيل، يعني بألف رجل أي بألف واحد.

And it is said: So-and-so sent forth his horses with a thousand 'tuw', and 'tuw' is a thousand horses, meaning a thousand men or a thousand individuals.

وتقول: مضت توة من الليل والنهار أي ساعة

And you say: 'Tawwatan' of the night or day has passed, meaning an hour.

وفي حديث الشعبي: فما مضت إلا توة حتى قام الأحنف من مجلسه أي ساعة واحدة.

And in the hadith of Al-Sha'bi: 'Not more than a 'tawwah' passed until Al-Ahnaf stood from his gathering', meaning one hour.

وأنشد: جارية ليست من الوخشن، ... لا تعقد المنطق بالمتنن إلا بتو واحد أو تن أي نصف تو

And he recited: A maiden not of the rough kind... does not tie the knot with strength except with one 'tuw' or 'tun', meaning half a 'tuw'.

والتو: الفارغ من شغل الدنيا وشغل الآخرة.

And 'al-tuw': the one empty of worldly concerns and the concerns of the hereafter.

والتو: البناء المنصوب؛ قال الأخطل يصف تسنم القبر ولحده: وقد كنت فيما قد بنى لي حافري ... أعاليه توا وأسفله لحدا

And 'al-tuw': the erected structure; Al-Akhtal said, describing the summit of a grave and its tomb: 'And what my digger built for me... its upper part as a 'tuw' and its lower part as a tomb.'

والتوى، مقصور: الهلاك، وفي الصحاح: هلاك المال.

And 'al-tawa', short form: destruction, and in Al-Sihah: destruction of wealth.

وأتواه الله: أذهبه.

And Allah caused it to perish: He made it go away.

وهذا مال تو، على فعل.

And this is 'tuw' wealth, according to the pattern 'fa'al'.

وفي حديث أبي بكر، وقد ذكر من يدعى من أبواب الجنة فقال: ذلك الذي لا توى عليه أي لا ضياع ولا خسارة، وهو من التوى الهلاك.

And in the hadith of Abu Bakr, when mentioning those who will be called from the gates of Paradise, he said: 'That is the one against whom there is no 'tawa', meaning no loss or waste, and it is from 'al-tawa' meaning destruction.'

والتوي: المقيم؛ قال: إذا صوت الأصداء يوما أجابها ... صدى، وتوي بالفلاة غريب

And 'al-tawiyy': the resident; he said: 'If the echoes one day answer them... an echo, and a resident in the desert is a stranger.'

والتواء من سمات الإبل: وسم كهيئة الصليب طويل يأخذ الخد كله؛ عن ابن حبيب من تذكرة أبي علي.

And 'al-tiwaa'' from the brands of camels: a brand like a long cross that covers the entire cheek; from Ibn Habib in the 'Tadhkirah' of Abu Ali.

فأما في العنق فأن يبدأ به من اللهزمة ويحدر حذاء العنق خطا من هذا الجانب وخطا من هذا الجانب ثم يجمع بين طرفيهما من أسفل لا من فوق، وإذا كان في الفخذ فهو خط في عرضها، يقال منه بعير متوي، وقد تويته تيا، وإبل متواة، وبعير به تواء وتواءان وثلاثة أتوية.
