والبغي: أصله الحسد، ثم سمي الظلم بغيا لأن الحاسد يظلم المحسود جهده إراغة زوال نعمة الله عليه عنه.
And injustice (al-baghy): its origin is envy, then oppression is called injustice (baghyan) because the envier wrongs the envied with all his might, seeking the removal of God's favor from him.
وبغى بغيا: كذب.
And he said 'bagha baghyan': he lied.

وبغى في مشيته بغيا: اختال وأسرع.
And he walked with arrogance (bagha fi mashyatihi baghyan): he was conceited and walked fast.

وبغى الجرح يبغي بغيا: فسد وأمد وورم وترامى إلى فساد.

And it is not fitting for you to do (wa ma yanbaghi laka an taf'al) and what he seeks (wa ma yabtaghi), meaning 'we do not give you power'.
وحكى اللحياني: ما انبغى لك أن تفعل هذا وما ابتغى أي ما ينبغي.
And Al-Lihyani narrated: It was not fitting for you to do this (ma inbagha laka an taf'al) and what he sought (wa ma ibtagha), meaning 'what is fitting'.
إنك لعالم ولا تباغ أي لا تصب بالعين
Indeed, you are knowledgeable and will not be struck by the evil eye (wa la tubagh), meaning 'you will not be afflicted by the eye'.
والله ما نبالي أن تباغي أي ما نبالي أن تصيبك العين.
By God, we do not care if you are struck by the evil eye (an tubaghi), meaning 'we do not care if the eye afflicts you'.
إنه لكريم ولا يباغه، وإنهما لكريمان ولا يباغيا، وإنهم لكرام ولا يباغوا، ومعناه الدعاء له أي لا يبغى عليه؛ قال:
Indeed, he is noble and is not afflicted by it (wa la yubagh), and they (dual) are noble and are not afflicted by it (wa la yubaghia), and they (plural) are noble and are not afflicted by it (wa la yubaghu), and its meaning is a prayer for him, meaning 'may he not be wronged' (la yubgha 'alayhi); he said:
بعضهم لا يجعله على الدعاء فيقول لا يباغى ولا يباغيان ولا يباغون أي ليس يباغيه أحد
Some do not interpret it as a prayer, saying 'he is not afflicted' (la yubagha), 'they (dual) are not afflicted' (la yubaghia), 'they (plural) are not afflicted' (la yubaghu), meaning 'no one afflicts him'.
وهذا من البوغ، والأول من البغي، وكأنه جاء مقلوبا.
And this is from al-bugh, and the first is from al-baghy, and it seems to have come reversed.

If you are honored when you attain something noble, ... then indeed I see you, and you are not envied (wa la tubagh), as a base person.
وفي التثنية: لا يباغان، ولا يباغون، والقياس أن يقال في الواحد على الدعاء ولا يبغ، ولكنهم أبوا إلا أن يقولوا ولا يباغ.
And in the dual: 'they (dual) are not envied' (la yubaghan), and 'they (plural) are not envied' (la yubaghu). The standard would be to say for the singular, as a prayer, 'wa la tubgh', but they refused except to say 'wa la tubagh'.
أن إبراهيم بن المهاجر جعل على بيت الورق فقال النخعي ما بغي له أي ما خير له.
That Ibrahim bin Al-Muhajir placed [a tax] on the house of paper, so Al-Nakha'i said, 'What is best for him (ma baghya lahu)?', meaning 'What is better for him?'.
