When I set out to saddle her at night, ... she groaned a groan like a sad man.

ويروى: تهوه هاهة الرجل الحزين

And it is narrated: she moaned a moan like a sad man.

ابن السكيت: الآهة من التأوه، وهو التوجع

Ibn al-Sikkit: Al-aahah is from al-ta'awwuh, which is groaning from pain.

يقال: تأوهت آهة، وكذلك قولهم في الدعاء آهة وأميهة

It is said: I groaned a groan, and likewise their saying in supplication is aah and umihah.

والهوهاءة والهوهاء: البئر التي لا متعلق بها ولا موضع لرجل نازلها لبعد جاليها

And al-huhaa'ah and al-huhaa': the well that has no support and no place for a man descending into it due to the distance of its well-digging.

ورجل هوهاء وهوهاءة وهوهاة: ضعيف الفؤاد جبان من ذلك

And a man who is huhaa', huhaa'ah, and huhaah: weak-hearted, cowardly from that.

وحكى ابن السكيت هواهية أيضا للجبان

And Ibn al-Sikkit narrated hawaahiyah also for the coward.

ورجل هوهة، بالضم، أي جبان

And a man who is hoohah, with dammah, means cowardly.

وفي حديث عمرو بن العاص: كنت الهوهاة الهمزة ؛ الهوهاة: الأحمق

And in the hadith of Amr ibn al-Aas: I was the huhaa'ah the hamzah; al-huhaa'ah: the foolish.

أبو عبيد: الموماة والهوهاة واحد، والجمع الموامي والهياهي

Abu Ubayd: Al-maamaah and al-huhaa'ah are one, and the plural of mawamaah is al-mawaami and al-huhaa'ah is al-hayaahi.

وتهوه الرجل: تفجع

And tahawwaha the man: he grieved.

والهواهي: ضرب من السير، واحدتها هوهاة

And al-hawaahi: a type of gait, its singular is hawaah.

إن الناقة لتسير هواهي من السير

Indeed, the she-camel walks with a hawaahi gait.

ويقال: جاء فلان بالهواهي أي بالتخاليط والأباطيل

And it is said: So-and-so came with al-hawaahi, meaning with mixtures and falsehoods.

والهواهي: اللغو من القول والأباطيل

And al-hawaahi: the idle talk and falsehoods.

وسمعت هواهية القوم: وهو مثل عزيف الجن وما أشبهه

And I heard the hawaahiyah of the people: and it is like the chirping of jinn and what resembles it.

ورجل هوه: كهوهاءة

And a man who is hooh: like huhaa'ah.

والعرب تقول عند التوجع والتلهف: هاه وهاهيه

And the Arabs say when in pain and regret: Haah and Haahiyah.

قال الغواني: قد زهاه كبره، ... وقلن: يا عم فما أغيره، وقلت: هاه لحديث أكثره الهاء في أكثره لهاه

The beauties said: His pride has made him seem young, ... And they said: O uncle, how unchanged he is, And I said: Haah, for most of the talk is Haa, in most of it is Laah.

وفي حديث عذاب القبر: هاه هاه

And in the hadith of the punishment of the grave: Haah haah.

قال: هذه كلمة تقال في الإيعاد وفي حكاية الضحك، وقد تقال للتوجع

He said: This is a word said in threatening and in narrating laughter, and it may be said for pain.

فتكون الهاء الأولى مبدلة من همزة آه، وهو الأليق بمعنى هذا الحديث

So the first Haa would be a substitute for the hamzah of Aah, which is more fitting for the meaning of this hadith.

يقال: تأوه وتهوه آهة وهاهة

It is said: Ta'awwaha and tahawwaha a groan and a haah.
