And a man is 'tā'ih', 'tayyāh', and 'tīhān', and a man is 'tīhān' and 'tīhān' if he is audacious, rushing headlong into matters.

وأنشد: تقدمها تيهانة جسور، ... لا دعرم نام ولا عثور

And he recited: 'It led them, an audacious she-camel... neither a slow-moving one nor a stumbling one.'

وتاه في الأرض يتيه توها وتيها وتيها وتيهانا، والتيه أعمها، أي ذهب متحيرا وضل، وهو تياه.

And he wandered in the land, getting lost ('taaha fī al-arḍi yatīhu tawhan wa tīhan wa tīhan wa tīhānan'), and 'al-tīh' is the most general of them, meaning he went bewildered and lost, and he is 'tayyāh'.

وفي الحديث: إنك امرؤ تائه أي متكبر أو ضال متحير؛

And in the Hadith: 'Indeed, you are a man 'tā'ih', meaning arrogant or lost and bewildered.'

ومننه الحديث: تاهت به سفينته.

And from it is the Hadith: 'His boat got lost.'

أبو عبيد: طاح يطيح طيحا وتاه يتيه تيها وتيهانا، وما أطوحه وأتوهه وأطيحه وأتيهه، وقد طوح نفسه وتوهها.

Abu Ubaid said: 'ṭāḥa yuṭīḥu ṭayḥan' and 'tāha yatīhu tīhan wa tīhānan', and 'mā aṭwaḥuhu wa atūhu wa aṭīḥuhu wa atīyuhu', and he made himself wander and lost.

قال ابن دريد: رجل تيهان إذا تاه في الأرض، قال: ولا يقال في الكبر إلا تائه وتياه، وبلد أتيه.

Ibn Duraid said: A man is 'tīhān' if he wanders in the land. He said: And for arrogance, only 'tā'ih' and 'tayyāh' are said, and a land is 'atīh'.

والتيهاء: الأرض التي لا يهتدى فيها.

And 'al-tīhā'' is the land in which one is not guided.

والتيهاء: المضلة الواسعة التي لا أعلام فيها ولا جبال ولا إكام.

And 'al-tīhā'' is the vast, misleading place that has no landmarks, no mountains, and no hills.

والتيه: المفازة يتاه فيها، والجمع أتياه وأتاويه.

And 'al-tīh' is the desert where one gets lost, and its plural is 'atīyah' and 'atāwīh'.

وفلاة تيهاء وأرض تيه وتيهاء ومتيهة ومتيهة ومتيه: مضلة أي يتيه فيها الإنسان؛

And a desert is 'tīhā'' and land is 'tīh', 'tīhā'', 'matīhah', 'matīhah', and 'matīh': misleading, meaning a person gets lost in it.

قال العجاج: تيه أتاويه على السقاط وقد تيهه.

Al-A'raj said: 'A desert whose paths lead to ruin, and he made it lost.'

وأرض متيهة؛ وأنشد: مشتبه متيه تيهاؤه

And a land is 'matīhah'; and he recited: 'Confusing, its trackless expanse.'

وأرض متيهة: مثال معيشة، وأصله مفعلة.

And a land is 'matīhah': like 'ma'īshah', and its origin is 'maf'alah'.

ويقال: مكان متيه للذي يتيه الإنسان؛

And it is said: A place is 'matīh' for one in whom a person gets lost.

قال رؤبة: ينوي اشتقاقا في الضلال المتيه

Ru'bah said: 'He intends derivation in the misleading straying.'

أبو تراب: سمعت عراما يقول تاه بصر الرجل وتاف إذا نظر إلى الشيء في دوام، وتاف عني بصرك، وتاه إذا تخطى.

Abu Turab said: I heard Arram say 'tāha baṣaru al-rajul' and 'tafa' if he looked at something continuously, and 'tafa 'anni baṣaruk', and 'tāha' if he transgressed.

الجوهري: هو أتيه الناس.

Al-Jauhari said: He is the most arrogant of people.

وتيه نفسه وتوه بمعنى أي حيرها وطوحها، والواو أعم.

And 'tīha nafsahu' and 'tawwaha' mean the same, i.e., he bewildered it and made it wander, and the 'waw' is more general.

وما أتيهه وأتوهه.

And how I make him wander and bewilder him.

والتيه: حيث تاه بنو إسرائيل أي حاروا فلم يهتدوا للخروج منه؛

And 'al-tīh' is where the Children of Israel wandered, meaning they were confused and did not find their way out of it.

فأما قوله: تقذفه في مثل غيطان التيه، ... في كل تيه جدول تؤتيه

As for his saying: 'It throws him into places like the valleys of the wilderness, ... in every wilderness a stream is brought to it.'

فإنما عنى التيه من الأرض، أو جمع تيهاء من الأرض، وليس بتيه بني إسرائيل لأنه قد قال في كل تيه، فذلك يدلك على أنه أتياه لا تيه واحد، وتيه بني إسرائيل ليس أتياها إنما هو تيه، واحد، شبه أجواف الإبل في سعتها بالتيه، وهو الواسع من الأرض.

He only meant the wilderness of the land, or a collection of 'tīhā'' from the land, and it is not the wilderness of the Children of Israel because he said 'in every wilderness', which indicates it is 'atīyah' (plural) not a single 'tīh'. And the wilderness of the Children of Israel is not 'atīyah', it is a single 'tīh'. He likened the bellies of camels in their vastness to the wilderness, which is the wide expanse of land.

وتيه الشيء: ضيعه.

And 'tīha al-shay'' means losing something.

وتيهان: اسم.

And 'Tīhān' is a name.
