He settled in a place and 'awṭana' (settled); the latter is more elevated.

And 'awṭanahu': he took it as a homeland.

يقال: أوطن فلان أرض كذا وكذا أي اتخذها محلا ومسكنا يقيم فيها

It is said: So-and-so 'awṭana' such-and-such land, meaning he took it as a place and a dwelling where he resides.

والميطان: الموضع الذي يوطن لترسل منه الخيل في السباق، وهو أول الغاية

And the 'mīṭān': the place from which horses are sent in a race, and it is the beginning of the finish line.

It is said: From where is your 'mīṭān', meaning your goal.

كان لا يوطن الأماكن أي لا يتخذ لنفسه مجلسا يعرف به

He did not 'yuwaṭṭin' places, meaning he did not take for himself a council by which he would be known.

والموطن: مفعل منه، ويسمى به المشهد من مشاهد الحرب، وجمعه مواطن

And the 'mawṭin': is a noun of place from it, and the scene of a battle is named by it, and its plural is 'mawāṭin'.

لقد نصركم الله في مواطن كثيرة

Allah has indeed given you victory in many battles.

على موطن يخشى الفتى عنده الردى

Upon a site where a young man fears death.

اتخذتها وطنا، وكذلك الاتطان، وهو افتعال منه

I took it as a homeland, and likewise 'al-iṭṭiṭān', which is a verb form derived from it.

إذا أتيت فوقفت في تلك المواطن فادع الله لي ولإخواني

If you come and stand in those places, then pray to Allah for me and my brothers.

أنه نهى عن نقرة الغراب وأن يوطن الرجل في المكان بالمسجد كما يوطن البعير

That he forbade the pecking of a crow and that a man should 'yuwaṭṭin' a place in the mosque as a camel 'yuwaṭṭin'.

أن يألف الرجل مكانا معلوما من المسجد مخصوصا به يصلي فيه كالبعير لا يأوي من عطن إلا إلى مبرك دمث قد أوطنه واتخذه مناخا

That a man should become accustomed to a known place in the mosque, specific to him, to pray in it, like a camel that does not seek refuge from its resting place except in a soft spot it has made its own and taken as a place to lie down.

أنه نهى عن إيطان المساجد أي اتخاذها وطنا

That he forbade the 'īṭān' of mosques, meaning making them a homeland.

واطنه على الأمر: أضمر فعله معه

'Wāṭanahu' on the matter: he concealed his action with him.

تقول: واطنت فلانا على هذا الأمر إذا جعلتما في أنفسكما أن تفعلاه

You say: I 'wāṭantu' so-and-so on this matter if you both resolved in yourselves to do it.

وتوطين النفس على الشيء: كالتمهيد

And 'tawṭīn al-nafs' on a thing: is like preparation.

وطن نفسه على الشيء وله فتوطنت حملها عليه فتحملت وذلت له

He 'waṭṭana' himself for a thing, and he 'tawaṭṭana' it, carrying it upon himself, so he bore it and submitted to it.

فقلت لها: يا عز، كل مصيبة إذا وطنت يوما لها النفس، ذلت

So I said to her: O 'Izz, every calamity, if the soul 'waṭṭanat' for it one day, it becomes submissive.
