معنى قوله أولئك الذين امتحن الله قلوبهم للتقوى شرح الله قلوبهم
The meaning of His saying: 'Those are the ones whose hearts Allah has tested for piety' is that Allah has opened their hearts (to piety).
كأن معناه وسع الله قلوبهم للتقوى.
As if its meaning is that Allah has widened their hearts for piety.
ومحنته وامتحنته: بمنزلة خبرته واختبرته وبلوته وابتليته.
And his maḥnah and imtiḥānuhu: are like his experience, his testing, his trial, and his affliction.
وأصل المحن: الضرب بالسوط.
And the origin of maḥn is striking with a whip.
وامتحنت الذهب والفضة إذا أذبتهما لتختبرهما حتى خلصت الذهب والفضة، والاسم المحنة.
And you test gold and silver when you melt them to test them until you purify the gold and silver, and the noun is maḥnah.
والمحن: العطية.
And al-maḥan: the gift.
وأتيت فلانا فما محنني شيئا أي ما أعطاني.
And I came to so-and-so, and he did not give me anything, meaning he did not give me.
المحنة: واحدة المحن التي يمتحن بها الإنسان من بلية، نستجير بكرم الله منها.
The ordeal: one of the trials by which a person is tested from affliction, we seek refuge in Allah's generosity from it.
المحنة بدعة ، هي أن يأخذ السلطان الرجل فيمتحنه ويقول: فعلت كذا وفعلت كذا، فلا يزال به حتى يقول ما لم يفعله أو ما لا يجوز قوله، يعني أن هذا القول بدعة؛
The ordeal is an innovation; it is that the ruler takes a man and tests him and says: 'You did such and such, and you did such and such,' and he continues to pressure him until he says what he did not do or what is not permissible to say, meaning that this saying is an innovation;
وحب ليلى، ولا تخشى محونته، ... صدع لنفسك مما ليس ينتقد
And love Layla, and do not fear its shame, ... break your soul from what is not criticized
محونته عاره وتباعته، يجوز أن يكون مشتقا من المحنة لأن العار من أشد المحن، ويجوز أن يكون مفعلة من الحين، وذلك أن العار كالقتل أو أشد.
Its shame is its disgrace and its consequence; it may be derived from maḥnah because disgrace is among the most severe trials, and it may be derived from muf'alah from al-ḥīn, and that is because disgrace is like killing or worse.
المحنة معنى الكلام الذي يمتحن به ليعرف بكلامه ضمير قلبه، تقول امتحنته، وامتحنت الكلمة أي نظرت إلى ما يصير إليه صيورها.
The ordeal is the meaning of the speech by which one is tested to know the inner state of his heart through his speech; you say 'I tested him,' and 'I examined the word,' meaning I looked at its eventual outcome.
المحن: النكاح الشديد.

It is said: maḥantuhu and makhanuhu, with ḥā' and khā', and maḥajtuhu, naqajtuhu, naqaḥtuhu, jalḥatuhu, jaḥshatuhu, mashantuhu, 'aramatuhu, ḥasafatuhu, ḥasaltuhu, khasaltuhu, and latḥtuhu, all meaning 'I peeled it'.
