وفي حدث سالم أنه دخل على هشام فقال له إنك لحسن الكدنة

And in the account of Salim, he entered upon Hisham, and Hisham said to him: Indeed, you are good in your corpulence.

فقال لصاحبه أترى الأحول لقعني بعينه الكدنة

So he said to his companion: Do you think the cross-eyed man has afflicted me with his eye's corpulence?

والكدنة، بالكسر وقد تضم غلظ الجسم وكثرة اللحم

And it is said: it is an 'aba' or a cloak that a woman throws over her camel's back, then secures her howdah upon it, and folds the ends of the cloak from the sides of the camel, leaving the rear and front of the 'kadan' like two saddlebags into which she places her cooking pot and other belongings she needs to carry.

والجمع كدون

And the plural is kudun.

أبو عمرو الكدون التي توطئ بها المرأة لنفسها في الهودج

Abu Amr said: Al-Kudun are those which a woman places beneath herself in the howdah.

قال وقال الأحمر هي الثياب التي تكون على الخدور، واحدها كدن

And Al-Ahmar said: they are the clothes that are on the litters, their singular is kadan.

والكدن والكدن مركب من مراكب النساء

And al-Kadan and al-Kadan are a type of riding conveyance for women.

والكدن والكدن الرحل قال الراعي أنخن جمالهن بذات غسل، ... سراة اليوم يمهدن الكدونا

And al-Kadan and al-Kadan: the saddle. Al-Rai said: They made their camels kneel at Dhat Ghasl, ... in the middle of the day they prepared the saddles.

والكدن شيء من جلود يدق فيه كالهاون

And al-Kadan is something made of skins in which things are ground like in a mortar.

وفي المحكم الكدن جلد كراع يسلخ ويدبغ ويجعل فيه الشيء فيدق فيه كما يدق في الهاون

And in Al-Muhkam: al-Kadan is a tanned hide of a young camel, which is skinned and tanned, and into which something is placed to be ground as it is ground in a mortar.

والجمع من ذلك كله كدون

And the plural of all of that is kudun.

وأنشد ابن بري هم أطعمونا ضيونا ثم فرتنى، ... ومشوا بما في الكدن شر الجوازل

And Ibn Bri recited: They fed us roasted meat, then they fled... and they walked with what was in the saddlebags, the worst of the burdens.

And al-Dayun is the male of cats.

والكودانة الناقة الغليظة الشديدة

And al-Kudana: the thick and strong female camel.

قال ابن الرقاع حملته بازل كودانة ... في ملاط

Ibn Al-Ruqa' said: She carried him, a strong young female camel... in a mixture.

وكدنت شفته كدنا، فهي كدنة اسودت من شيء أكله، لغة في كتنت

And his lip became black from eating something, and it became black, a dialectal variant of 'katana'.

فغادرتها من بعد بدن رذية، ... تغالي على عوج لها كدنات

So I left her after a weak body, ... she galloped on her crooked legs with thick parts.

تغالي أي تسير مسرعة

وقول الشاعر خليلي عوجا من صدور الكوادن ... إلى قصعة، فيها عيون الضياون

And the poet's saying: My two companions, turn from the chests of the elephants... to a bowl, in which are the eyes of the cats (referring to a dish).

قال شبه الثريدة الزريقاء بعيون السنانير لما فيها من الزيت الجوهري

He said he likened the bluish thareedah to the eyes of cats because of the precious oil in it.

الكودن البرذون يوكف ويشبه به البليد

Al-Kudan is the riding horse, which is slow, and the dull person is likened to it.

يقال ما أبين الكدانة فيه أي الهجنة

It is said: How evident is the hybridity in him!

والكدن أن تنزح البئر فيبقى الكدر

And al-Kadan is when the well is emptied and the turbidness remains.

ويقال أدركوا كدن مائكم أي كدره

And it is said: Reach the turbid part of your water, meaning its muddiness.

قال أبو منصور الكدن والكدر والكدل واحد

Abu Mansur said: Al-Kadan, al-Kadr, and al-Kadl are one.

ويقال كدن الصليان إذا رعي فروعه وبقيت أصوله

And it is said: the saltwort became kudan if its branches were grazed and its roots remained.

والكديون التراب الدقاق على وجه الأرض

And al-Kudayun: the fine dust on the surface of the earth.

قال أبو دواد، وقيل للطرماح تيممت بالكديون كي لا يفوتني، ... من المقلة البيضاء

Abu Dawud said: And it was said to Al-Tirmah: You aimed for the fine dust so as not to miss... from the white eye (of the well).

يعني بالمقلة الحصاة التي يقسم بها الماء في المفاوز

Meaning by 'al-Maqla': the pebble by which water is divided in the deserts.

وبالتقريظ ما يثنى به على الله تعالى وتقدس

And by 'al-Taqriz': what is praised to God, may He be exalted and sanctified.

وبالباعق المؤذن

And by 'al-Bā'iq': the caller to prayer.

And it is said: it is fine dung mixed with oil, with which armor is polished.

Al-Nābigha said, describing armor polished with al-Kudayun and dung: They were coated with al-Kudayun and inside with 'kurra', ... so they were bright and pure of sheen.

ورواه بعضهم ضافيات الغلائل

And some of them narrated it as 'dāfiyāt al-ghalā'il'.

وفي الصحاح الكديون مثال الفرجون دقاق التراب عليه دردي الزيت تجلى به الدروع

And in Al-Sihah: al-Kudayun, like al-Farjun, is fine dust with oil dregs on it, with which armor is polished.

وأنشد بيت النابغة وكدين اسم

And he recited Al-Nābigha's verse, and 'Kudayn' is a name.
