وَقُفَّانُ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ جِمَاعُهُ وَاسْتِقْصَاءُ مَعْرِفَتِهِ.

وَمِنْهُ قَوْلُ الْعَامَّةِ: فُلَانٌ قُبَّانٌ عَلَى فُلَانٍ إِذَا كَانَ بِمَنْزِلَةِ الْأَمِينِ عَلَيْهِ وَالرَّئِيسِ الَّذِي يَتَتَبَّعُ أَمْرَهُ وَيُحَاسِبُهُ.
And from this is the common saying: So-and-so is a supervisor over so-and-so when he is in the position of a trustee over him and a chief who follows his affairs and holds him accountable.
وَبِهِذَا سُمِّيَ الْمِيزَانُ، الَّذِي يُقَالُ لَهُ الْقُبَّانُ، الْقُبَّانَ.
And by this the scale, which is called the 'qubban', was named the 'qubban'.
وَحِمَارٌ قُبَّانٌ: دُوَيْبَّةٌ مَعْرُوفَةٌ.
And a 'himar qubban' is a known small animal.
يَا عَجَباً لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ عَجَباً: ... حِمَارُ قُبَّانٍ يَسُوقُ أَرْنَبَا، خِطَامُهَا زِمَامُهَا أَنْ تَذْهَبَا.
Oh, what a wonder, I have seen a wonder: ... a 'himar qubban' driving a rabbit, its bridle and reins preventing them from going.
