You forgot such-and-such of my right from so-and-so, meaning you forgot it and made a mistake in it.
وغبن الرجل يغبنه غبنا: مر به وهو ماثل فلم يره ولم يفطن له.
And a man passes by him, and he passes by him with ghubnan: he passed by him while he was present, but did not see him and did not notice him.
ويقال في رأيه غبن.
And it is said: 'There is ghubn in his opinion.'
وغبن رأيه، بالكسر، إذا نقصه، فهو غبين أي ضعيف الرأي، وفيه غبانة.
And 'ghabina ra'yuhu' (with kasr), if it diminishes it, then he is ghubayn, meaning weak in opinion, and he has ghubanah.
وقالوا: غبن رأيه، فنصبوه على معنى فعل، وإن لم يلفظ به، أو على معنى غبن في رأيه، أو على التمييز النادر.
And they said: 'ghabina ra'yuhu', and they made it accusative, meaning 'he did an action', even if it was not uttered, or meaning 'he was deceived in his opinion', or as a rare specification.
قولهم سفه نفسه وغبن رأيه وبطر عيشه وألم بطنه ووفق أمره ورشد أمره كان الأصل سفهت نفس زيد ورشد أمره، فلما حول الفعل إلى الرجل انتصب ما بعده بوقوع الفعل عليه، لأنه صار في معنى سفه نفسه، بالتشديد؛
Their saying 'safaha nafsahu' (he made his soul foolish), 'ghabina ra'yahu' (his opinion was deficient), 'batara 'ayshahu' (he lived in luxury), 'alimat batnahu' (his stomach ached), 'waffaqah amruhu' (his affair was successful), and 'rashada amruhu' (his affair was guided) originally meant 'safahat nafsu Zayd' (Zayd's soul was foolish) and 'rashada amruhu' (his affair was guided). When the verb was transferred to the man, what followed became accusative by the verb's effect on it, because it became in the meaning of 'safaha nafsahu' (with shaddah);
ومنهم قولهم: ضقت به ذرعا وطبت به نفسا والمعنى ضاق ذرعي به وطابت نفسي به.
And among them is their saying: 'dhiiqtu bihi dhar'an' (I was constrained by him) and 'tabtu bihi nafsan' (my soul was pleased with him), and the meaning is 'dhaqat dhar'i bihi' (my patience was constrained by him) and 'tabat nafsi bihi' (my soul was pleased with him).
ورجل غبين ومغبون في الرأي والعقل والدين.
And a man is ghubayn and maghbun in opinion, intellect, and religion.
والغبن في البيع والشراء: الوكس، غبنه يغبنه غبنا هذا الأكثر أي خدعه، وقد غبن فهو مغبون، وقد حكي بفتح الباء «2».
And al-ghabn in buying and selling is al-waks (underpricing); he deceived him, he deceives him, with ghubnan - this is the most common meaning, meaning he tricked him. And he has been deceived, so he is maghbun. And it has been narrated with a fatha on the baa.
غبنت في البيع غبنا إذا غفلت عنه، بيعا كان أو شراء.
I was negligent in the sale with ghubnan if I was unaware of it, whether it was a sale or a purchase.
وغبيت الرجل أغباه أشد الغباء، وهو مثل الغبن.
And I was extremely foolish towards the man, with ashadd al-ghabaa', and it is like ghubn.
ابن بزرج: غبن الرجل غبنانا شديدا وغبن أشد الغبنان، ولا يقولون في الربح إلا ربح أشد الربح والرباحة والرباح؛
Ibn Buzraj said: A man was severely foolish with ghubnanan shadidan, and he was more foolish with ashadd al-ghubnan. And they do not say about profit except 'ribhun ashadd al-ribh', 'ar-ribahah', and 'ar-ribah';
وقوله: مغبون أي أن غيرهم فيه «3»، وهم يجدونه كأنه يقول هم يقدرون عليه إلا أنهم لا يعيشونه، وقيل: غبنوا الناس إذا لم ينله غيرهم.
And his saying: 'maghbun' means that others have it, and they find it, as if he is saying they are capable of it, except that they do not live it. And it is said: 'They were deprived of people' if others did not attain them.
وأرى هذا الأمر عليك غبنا؛ وأنشد:
And I see this matter as a loss for you; and he recited:
أجول في الدار لا أراك، وفي الدار ... أناس جوارهم غبن .
I roam in the house, I do not see you, and in the house ... are people whose neighbors are ghubn (a loss/deception).
وفي الحديث: كان إذا اطلى بدأ بمغابنه ؛ المغابن: الأرفاغ، وهي بواطن الأفخاذ عند الحوالب، جمع مغبن من غبن الثوب إذا ثناه وعطفه، وهي معاطف الجلد أيضا.
And in the Hadith: 'When he would anoint himself, he would begin with his maghabinih'; al-maghabin are the groins, which are the inner thighs near the hips, the plural of maghban from 'ghabana ath-thawb' (to fold the garment) if he folds and bends it, and they are also the folds of the skin.
وفي حديث عكرمة: من مس مغابنه فليتوضأ ؛ أمره بذلك استظهارا واحتياطا، فإن الغالب على من يلمس ذلك الموضع أن تقع يده على ذكره، وقيل: المغابن الأرفاغ والآباط، واحدها مغبن.
And in the narration of Ikrimah: 'Whoever touches his maghabinih should perform ablution'; he ordered him to do so as a precaution and safeguard, because it is most likely that whoever touches that area will touch his private parts. And it is said: al-maghabin are the groins and armpits, and their singular is maghban.
وقال ثعلب: كل ما ثنيت عليه فخذك فهو مغبن.
And Tha'lab said: Everything that you fold your thigh upon is a maghban.
وغبنت الشيء إذا خبأته في المغبن.
And you hide a thing if you conceal it in the maghban.
وغبنت الثوب والطعام: مثل خبنت.
And you fold the garment and the food: like khabanta (you concealed).
والغابن: الفاتر عن العمل.
And al-ghabin: one who is sluggish in action.
والتغابن: أن يغبن القوم بعضهم بعضا.
And at-taghabun: is for people to deceive one another.
ويوم التغابن : يوم البعث، من ذلك، وقيل: سمي بذلك لأن أهل الجنة يغبن فيه أهل النار بما يصير إليه أهل الجنة من النعيم ويلقى فيه أهل النار من العذاب الجحيم، ويغبن من ارتفعت منزلته في الجنة من كان دون منزلته، وضرب الله ذلك مثلا للشراء والبيع كما قال تعالى: هل أدلكم على تجارة تنجيكم من عذاب أليم؟
And the Day of Taghabun: is the Day of Resurrection, from this. And it is said that it is named so because the people of Paradise will gain over the people of Hell by what the people of Paradise will attain of bliss, and what the people of Hell will endure of the torment of Hellfire. And whoever's rank is raised in Paradise will gain over those whose rank is below him. And Allah struck that as an example of buying and selling, as He said: 'Shall I show you a trade that will save you from a painful torment?'
وسئل الحسن عن قوله تعالى: ذلك يوم التغابن ؛ فقال: غبن أهل الجنة أهل النار أي استنقصوا عقولهم باختيارهم الكفر على الإيمان.
And Al-Hasan was asked about the saying of Allah, the Almighty: 'That is the Day of Taghabun'; so he said: The people of Paradise will gain over the people of Hell, meaning they will be deprived of their intellects by their choice of disbelief over faith.
ونظر الحسن إلى رجل غبن آخر في بيع فقال: إن هذا يغبن عقلك أي ينقصه.
And Al-Hasan looked at a man who had deceived another in a sale and said: 'Indeed, this deceives your intellect, meaning it diminishes it.'
وغبن الثوب يغبنه غبنا: كفه، وفي التهذيب: طال فثناه، وكذلك كبنه، وما قطع من أطراف الثوب فأسقط غبن؛
And ghabbana ath-thawb (he shortened the garment) with ghubnan: meaning he folded it. And in Al-Tahdhib: it became long, so he folded it. Likewise, he folded it. And whatever is cut from the edges of the garment and discarded is ghubn;
وقال الأعشى: يساقطها كسقاط الغبن .
And Al-A'sha said: 'It falls from it like the falling of ghubn.'
والغبن: ثني الشيء من دلو أو ثوب لينقص من طوله.
And al-ghabn: is folding something from a bucket or a garment to shorten its length.
ابن شميل: يقال هذه الناقة ما شئت من ناقة ظهرا وكرما غير أنها مغبونة لا يعلم ذلك منها، وقد غبنوا خبرها وغبنوها أي لم يعلموا علمها.
Ibn Shumayl said: It is said, 'This she-camel is whatever you wish of a she-camel in terms of strength and nobility, except that she is maghbunah (deceived/unaware), and that is not known from her.' And 'they were unaware of her news' and 'they were unaware of her' means 'they did not know her knowledge.'
