وجرس على آثارها كالمؤلب والعنة: ما تنصب عليه القدر.
And it made a sound after her tracks like a stirrer, and al-ʿannah: what the pot is set upon.
والعنون من الدواب: التي تباري في سيرها الدواب فتقدمها، وذلك من حمر الوحش؛
And al-ʿanūn from the beasts: the one that races with other beasts in its gait and surpasses them, and that is from the wild asses;
ويروى: خذوف، وهي السمينة من بقر الوحش.
And it is narrated: khadhūf, which is the fat one from the wild cows.
ويقال: فلان عنان على آنف القوم إذا كان سباقا لهم.
And it is said: So-and-so is an ʿanān to the foremost of the people if he is their forerunner.
والعنان: سير اللجام.
And al-ʿinān: the strap of the bridle.
وفي حديث عبد الله بن مسعود: كان رجل في أرض له إذ مرت به عنانة ترهيأ ؛
And in the hadith of Abdullah bin Mas'ud: A man was in a land he owned when a cloud passed by him, moving slowly;
العانة والعنانة: السحابة، وجمعها عنان.
Al-ʿānah and al-ʿanānah: the cloud, and its plural is ʿinān.
وفي الحديث: لو بلغت خطيئته عنان السماء ؛
And in the hadith: If his sins reached the ʿinān of the sky;
العنان، بالفتح: السحاب، ورواه بعضهم أعنان، بالألف، فإن كان المحفوظ أعنان فهي النواحي؛
Al-ʿinān, with fatha: the clouds, and some narrated it aʿnān, with alif. If what is preserved is aʿnān, then it means the directions;
وأعنان السماء: صفائحها وما اعترض من أقطارها كأنه جمع عنن.
And aʿnān of the sky: its surfaces and what obstructs its regions, as if it were the plural of ʿinin.
وأعنان الشجر: أطرافه ونواحيه.
And aʿnān of the trees: their extremities and their sides.
وعنان الدار: جانبها الذي يعن لك أي يعرض.
And ʿinān of the house: its side that appears to you, meaning it presents itself.
وفي حديث آخر: لا تصلوا في أعطان الإبل لأنها خلقت من أعنان الشياطين.
And in another hadith: Do not pray in the camel pens because they were created from the aʿnān of the devils.
وعننت الكتاب وأعننته لكذا أي عرضته له وصرفته إليه.
And I titled the book and titled it for such-and-such, meaning I presented it to it and directed it to it.
وعن الكتاب يعنه عنا وعننه: كعنونه، وعنونته وعلونته بمعنى واحد، مشتق من المعنى.
And from the book, he titles it ʿanā and ʿannana-hu: like ʿanwana-hu, and ʿanwantuhu and ʿalwantuhu are one meaning, derived from the meaning.
ويقال للرجل الذي يعرض ولا يصرح: قد جعل كذا وكذا عنوانا لحاجته؛
And it is said of a man who hints but does not state directly: He has made such-and-such a ʿunwān for his need;
والعنوان الأثر؛
And al-ʿunwān is the trace;
ضحوا بأشمط عنوان السجود به، ... يقطع الليل تسبيحا وقرآنا .
They sacrificed a grey-haired man, marked by prostration, ... who spent the night in glorification and recitation of the Quran.
والعلوان لغة في العنوان غير جيدة، والعنوان، بالضم، هي اللغة الفصيحة؛
And al-ʿilwān is a less good dialectal variant for al-ʿunwān, and al-ʿunwān, with damma, is the eloquent language;
نظرت إلى عنوانه فنبذته، ... كنبذك نعلا أخلقت من نعالكا .
I looked at its title and discarded it, ... like your discarding a worn-out sandal from your sandals.
واعتن ما عند القوم أي أعلم خبرهم.
And iʿtan what is with the people, meaning know their news.
وعنعنة تميم: إبدالهم العين من الهمزة كقولهم عن يريدون أن؛
And the ʿanʿanah of Tamim: their substitution of the ʿayn for the hamza, as in their saying ʿan when they mean an;
فلا تلهك الدنيا عن الدين، واعتمل ... لآخرة لا بد عن ستصيرها .
So let not this world distract you from religion, and work ... for an hereafter that you will surely turn to.
أعن ترسمت من خرقاء منزلة، ... ماء الصبابة من عينيك مسجوم .
Did you trace, from Khirqā', a dwelling place, ... with the water of longing flowing from your eyes?
فما أبن حتى قلن يا ليت عننا ... تراب، وعن الأرض بالناس تخسف .
So he did not appear until they said, 'Would that we were dust, ... and the earth swallowed us up with people.'
تحسب عني نائمة أي تحسب أني نائمة؛
She thought ʿannī she was sleeping, meaning she thought that I was sleeping;
أخبرنا فلان عن فلانا حدثه أي أن فلانا؛
So-and-so informed us ʿan so-and-so that he narrated to him, meaning that so-and-so;
والعرب تقول: لأنك ولعنك، تقول ذاك بمعنى لعلك.
And the Arabs say: laʿannaka and laʿannaka, they say that meaning laʿallaka.
كنا في عنة من الكلإ وفنة وثنة وعانكة من الكلإ واحد أي كنا في كلاء كثير وخصب.
We were in ʿinnah of fodder, and fannah, and thannah, and ʿānkaha of fodder, all meaning we were in abundant and fertile pasture.
وعن: معناها ما عدا الشيء، تقول: رميت عن القوس لأنه بها قذف سهمه عنها وعداها،
And ʿan: its meaning is what is other than the thing. You say: I shot from the bow because it launched its arrow from it and beyond it,
وأطعمته عن جوع، جعل الجوع منصرفا به تاركا له وقد جاوزه،
And I fed him away from hunger, making hunger turn away from him, leaving him, and it has passed him by,
وتقع من موقعها، وهي تكون حرفا واسما بدليل قولهم من عنه؛
And it occurs in its place, and it is a particle and a noun, as evidenced by their saying min ʿanhu;
فقلت للركب، لما أن علا بهم، ... من عن يمين الحبيا، نظرة قبل .
So I said to the riders, when it rose above them, ... from the right of al-Ḥubyā, a glance beforehand.
وإنما بنيت لمضارعتها للحرف؛ وقد توضع عن موضع بعد كما قال الحرث بن عباد:
And it is only built to resemble the particle; and it may be placed in the position of 'baʿda' (after) as Al-Ḥārith ibn ʿAbbād said:
قربا مربط النعامة مني، ... لقحت حرب وائل عن حيال .
Bring the ostrich's tether near me, ... the war of Wa'il has become pregnant after a while.
وتضحي فتيت المسك فوق فراشها، ... نؤوم الضحى لم تنتطق عن تفضل .
And she spends the morning with musk powder on her bed, ... sleeping at noon, not girding herself out of preference.
لاه ابن عمك لا أفضلت في حسب ... عني، ولا أنت دياني فتخزوني .
By your cousin, you have not excelled in lineage over me, nor are you a judge to make me suffer.
قال: عني في معنى علي أي لم تفضل في حسب علي،
He said: ʿannī in the meaning of ʿalayya, meaning you have not excelled in lineage over me,
قال: وقد جاء عن بمعنى بعد؛
He said: And ʿan has come in the meaning of baʿda (after);
ولقد شبت الحروب، فما غمرت ... فيها، إذ قلصت عن حيال أي قلصت بعد حيالها؛
And wars have indeed aged me, and I was not overwhelmed ... in them, when they retreated after a while, meaning they retreated after their while;
لورد تقلص الغيطان عنه، ... يبك مسافة الخمس الكمال
For a watering place from which the valleys recede, ... weeping the distance of the five perfections.
والعرب تقول: سر عنك وانفذ عنك أي امض وجز، لا معنى لعنك.
And the Arabs say: Move ʿank, and proceed ʿank, meaning go and pass through; there is no meaning to ʿank.
ألا تستلم؟ فقال له: انفذ عنك فإن النبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم، لم يستلمه ؛
Will you not touch it? So he said to him: Proceed ʿank, for the Prophet, peace be upon him, did not touch it;
تفسيره أي دعه.
Its interpretation, meaning leave it.
ويقال: جاءنا الخبر عن النبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم، فتخفض النون.
And it is said: The news came to us ʿan the Prophet, peace be upon him, so the nūn is lowered.
ويقال: جاءنا من الخير ما أوجب الشكر فتفتح النون، لأن عن كانت في الأصل عني ومن أصلها منا،
And it is said: Good came to us that necessitated thanks, so the nūn is opened, because ʿan was originally ʿannī and from its origin minnā,
فدلت الفتحة على سقوط الألف كما دلت الكسرة في عن على سقوط الياء؛
So the fatha indicated the dropping of the alif, just as the kasra in ʿan indicated the dropping of the yā;
منا أن ذر قرن الشمس، حتى ... أغاث شريدهم ملث الظلام .
From us, that the sun's horn be left, until ... their fugitive is aided by the darkness.
فإنها فتحت مع الأسماء التي تدخلها الألف واللام لالتقاء الساكنين كقولك من الناس،
For it is opened with nouns that take alif and lām due to the meeting of two silent letters, like your saying min an-nās,
النون من من ساكنة والنون من الناس ساكنة، وكان في الأصل أن تكسر لالتقاء الساكنين،
The nūn of min is silent, and the nūn of an-nās is silent, and it was originally to be given kasra due to the meeting of two silent letters,
ولكنها فتحت لثقل اجتماع كسرتين لو كان من الناس لثقل ذلك،
But it was opened due to the heaviness of two kasras meeting, if it were min an-nās, that would be heavy,
وأما إعراب عن الناس فلا يجوز فيه إلا الكسر لأن أول عن مفتوح،
As for the inflection of ʿan an-nās, only kasra is permissible because the beginning of ʿan is open,
والقول ما قال الزجاج في الفرق بينهما.
And the saying is what Al-Zajjāj said regarding the difference between them.
