عدن فلان بالمكان يعدن ويعدن عدنا وعدونا: أقام.
So-and-so resided in the place, he resides and he resides, a residence and a staying: he stayed.
وعدنت البلد: توطنته.
And I inhabited the land: I made it my home.
وجنات عدن منه أي جنات إقامة لمكان الخلد، وجنات عدن بطنانها، وبطنانها وسطها.
And the Gardens of Eden are from it, meaning gardens of permanent residence for the place of eternity, and the Gardens of Eden are their interiors, and their interiors are their middles.
وبطنان الأودية: المواضع التي يستريض فيها ماء السيل فيكرم نباتها، واحدها بطن.
And the interiors of the valleys: the places where the floodwater is sought and its vegetation flourishes, the singular of which is 'batn'.
واسم عدنان مشتق من العدن، وهو أن تلزم الإبل المكان فتألفه ولا تبرحه.
And the name Adnan is derived from 'al-'adn', which is when camels become attached to a place, become familiar with it, and do not leave it.
تقول: تركت إبل بني فلان عوادن بمكان كذا وكذا؛
You say: I left the camels of so-and-so's family as settled in such-and-such a place;
ومننه المعدن، بكسر الدال، وهو المكان الذي يثبت فيه الناس لأن أهله يقيمون فيه ولا يتحولون عنه شتاء ولا صيفا، ومعدن كل شيء من ذلك، ومعدن الذهب والفضة سمي معدنا لإنبات الله فيه جوهرهما وإثباته إياه في الأرض حتى عدن أي ثبت فيها.
And from it is 'al-ma'din', with a kasra on the dal, which is the place where people settle because its inhabitants reside there and do not move from it in winter or summer, and the source of everything is from that, and the mine of gold and silver is called a 'ma'din' because God caused their essence to grow in it and established it in the earth until it 'adana', meaning it was fixed in it.
المعدن الذي يخرج من المعدن الصخر ثم يكسرها يبتغي فيها الذهب.
The 'ma'din' from which the rock is extracted from the mine, then it is broken to seek gold within it.
فعن معادن العرب تسألوني؟ قالوا: نعم ، أي أصولها التي ينسبون إليها ويتفاخرون بها.
Are you asking me about the origins of the Arabs? They said: Yes, meaning their roots to which they trace their lineage and take pride in.
وفلان معدن للخير والكرم إذا جبل عليهما، على المثل؛
And so-and-so is a source of goodness and generosity if he is naturally inclined to them, by way of an analogy;
أنه أقطعه معادن القبلية ؛ المعادن: المواضع التي يستخرج منها جواهر الأرض.
That he granted him the mines of al-Qubaylah; the mines: the places from which the jewels of the earth are extracted.
والعدان: موضع العدون.
And 'al-'Adan': the place of 'al-'udun'.
وعدنت الإبل بمكان كذا تعدن وتعدن عدنا وعدونا: أقامت في المرعى، وخص بعضهم به الإقامة في الحمض، وقيل: صلحت واستمرأت المكان ونمت عليه؛
And the camels settled in such-and-such a place, they settle and they settle, a residence and a staying: they stayed in the pasture, and some specified it as staying in the 'hamdh' (a type of desert plant), and it was said: they became well and found the place palatable and grew upon it;
ولا تعدن إلا في الحمض،
And do not settle except in the 'hamdh',
وهي ناقة عادن، بغير هاء.
And she is a settled she-camel, without the 'ha'.
والعدن: موضع باليمن، ويقال له أيضا عدن أبين، نسب إلى أبين رجل من حمير لأنه عدن به أي أقام؛
And 'al-'Adan': a place in Yemen, and it is also called 'Aden of Abin', attributed to Abin, a man from Himyar, because he settled there, meaning he stayed;
وهي بلد على سيف البحر في أقصى بلاد اليمن؛
And it is a city on the coast of the sea in the farthest part of Yemen;
وفي الحديث ذكر عدن أبين ؛ هي مدينة معروفة باليمن أضيفت إلى أبين بوزن أبيض، وهو رجل من حمير.
And in the hadith, 'Aden of Abin' is mentioned; it is a well-known city in Yemen attributed to Abin, on the pattern of 'abyad', and he is a man from Himyar.
أبو عبيد: العدان الزمان؛
Abu Ubayd: 'al-'Adan' is the time;
ككسرى على عدانه، أو كقيصرا؟
Like Khosrau in his time, or like Caesar?
ولا على عدان ملك محتضر
Nor upon the time of a dying king
كان أمر كذا وكذا على عدان ابن بور؛
The matter was such-and-such during the time of Ibn Buur;
كان ذلك على عدان فرعون،
That was during the time of Pharaoh,
مكثنا في غلاء السعر عدانين، وهما أربع عشرة سنة، الواحد عدان، وهو سبع سنين.
We stayed during the price inflation for 'adanayn', which are fourteen years, the singular 'adan' is seven years.
والعدان: موضع كل ساحل، وقيل: عدان البحر، بالفتح، ساحله؛
And 'al-'Adan': the place of every coast, and it was said: 'Adan al-Bahr', with a fatha, its coast;
جلبن الخيل من تثليث، حتى ... وردن على أوارة فالعدان .
They brought the horses from Tathlith, until ... they arrived at Awarah and then Al-'Adan.
بعدان السيف صبري ونقل .
After the 'adan' of the sword, my patience and my movement.
وعدن النهر، بفتح العين، ضفته، وكذلك. عبرته [عبرته] ومعبره وبرغيله.
And 'Adan al-Nahr', with a fatha on the 'ayn', its bank, and likewise its crossing place and its passage.
وعدن الأرض يعدنها عدنا وعدنها: زبلها.
And he fertilized the land, he fertilizes it, a fertilizing and he fertilized it: he manured it.
والمعدن: الصاقور.
And 'al-ma'din': the sharp stone.
والعدينة: الزيادة التي تزاد في الغرب، وجمع العدينة عدائن.
And 'al-'udaynah': the addition that is added to the bucket, and the plural of 'udaynah' is 'ada'in'.
غرب معدن إذا قطع أسفله ثم خرز برقعة؛
A bucket is 'ma'din' if its bottom is cut and then stitched with a patch;
والغرب ذا العدينة الموعبا .
And the bucket with the ample addition.
العدين عرى منقشة تكون في أطراف عرى المزادة، وقيل: رقعة منقشة تكون في عروة المزادة.
'Al-'udayn' are decorated straps that are on the edges of the straps of the water skin, and it was said: a decorated patch that is on the strap of the water skin.
الغرب يعدن إذا صغر الأديم وأرادوا توفيره زادوا له عدينة أي زادوا له في ناحية منه رقعة.
The bucket is 'yu'addin' if the leather is small and they want to make it ample, they add an 'udaynah' to it, meaning they add a patch to a part of it.
والخف يعدن: يزاد في مؤخر الساق منه زيادة حتى يتسع،
And the sandal is 'yu'addin': an addition is made to its heel until it widens,
وكل رقعة تزاد في الغرب فهي عدينة، وهي كالبنيقة في القميص.
And every patch added to the bucket is an 'udaynah', and it is like the gusset in a shirt.
ويقال: عدن به الأرض وعدنه ضربها به.
And it is said: the land 'adana' it and 'adana' it, meaning striking it against it.
عدنت به الأرض ووجنت به الأرض ومرنت به الأرض إذا ضربت به الأرض.
The land 'adana' it, and the land 'wajana' it, and the land 'marana' it, if you strike it against the ground.
عدن الشارب إذا امتلأ، مثل أون وعدل.
The drinker 'adana' if he became full, like 'awana' and 'adala'.
والعيدان: النخل الطوال؛
And 'al-'uyudan': the tall palm trees;
يهززن للمشي أوصالا منعمة، ... هز الجنوب، ضحى، عيدان يبرينا .
They sway for walking, soft limbs, ... like the south wind, at midday, tall palm trees from Yabrīn.
قال أبو عمرو: العدانة الجماعة من الناس، وجمعه عدانات؛
Abu Amr said: 'al-'adanah' is the group of people, and its plural is 'adanat';
بني مالك لد الحضين، وراءكم، ... رجالا عدانات وخيلا أكاسما .
Sons of Malik, behold the 'Hadheen', behind you, ... men in groups and noble horses.
رجال عدانات مقيمون،
Men who are settled in groups,
والعدان: قبيلة من أسد؛
And 'al-'Adan': a tribe from Asad;
بكي على قتلى العدان، فإنهم ... طالت إقامتهم ببطن برام
He wept over the slain of Al-'Adan, for they ... their long stay was in the valley of Baram
والعدانات: الفرق من الناس.
And 'al-'adanat': the groups of people.
