وقد يقال لكل شاخص لسفر في حج أو غزو أو مسير من مدينة إلى أخرى ظاعن، وهو ضد الخافض،

And it may be said of everyone who sets out for travel in pilgrimage, or for war, or to move from one city to another, that he is a traveler (dha'in), and he is the opposite of one who stays put (khafid).

والظعنة: السفرة القصيرة.

And al-Dhu'nah: the short journey.

والظعينة: الجمل يظعن عليه.

And al-Dheynah: the camel upon which one travels.

والظعينة: الهودج تكون فيه المرأة، وقيل: هو الهودج، كانت فيه أو لم تكن.

And al-Dheynah: the litter in which a woman is, and it is said: it is the litter, whether a woman is in it or not.

والظعينة: المرأة في الهودج، سميت به على حد تسمية الشيء باسم الشيء لقربه منه،

Halt before we part, O you in the litter,

تبصر خليلي، هل ترى من ظعائن

Look, my friend, do you see any women in litters

فإذا بهوازن على بكرة آبائهم بظعنهم وشائهم ونعمهم ؛

And behold, the Hawazin tribe, with all their ancestors, with their women, their sheep, and their camels;

وأصل الظعينة الراحلة التي يرحل ويظعن عليها أي يسار،

والظعون من الإبل: الذي تركبه المرأة خاصة، وقيل: هو الذي يعتمل ويحتمل عليه.

And al-Dhu'un from camels: that which a woman specifically rides, and it is said: it is that which is worked and loaded upon.

والظعان والظعون: الحبل يشد به الهودج،

And al-Dha'aan and al-Dhu'un: the rope with which the litter is secured,

له عنق تلوى بما وصلت به، ودفان يستاقان كل ظعان

It has a neck that twists with what it is connected to, and two forelegs driving every load-strap

كما حاد الأزب عن الظعان

As the shaggy one shied away from the load-straps

فأما قوله: أو تصبحي في الظاعن المولي . فعلى إرادة الجنس.

As for his saying: or you become among the departing ones who are slow to move. It is with the intention of the general category.

والظعنة: الحال، كالرحلة.

And al-Dhu'nah: the state, like a journey.

وفرس مظعان: سهلة السير، وكذلك الناقة.

And a 'madh'aan' horse: easy-going, and likewise a she-camel.

وفي المثل: على كره ظعنت ظاعنة.

And in the proverb: A departing woman departed unwillingly.

وعثمان بن مظعون: صاحب النبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم.
